Recommendation:
Provide recommendations on a future Vernon Public Library and create a Library Ad
Hoc Committee to work with staff to determine a plan for the Vernon Public Library.

Trustee Davis moved and President Pro Tem Lopez seconded a motion to approve Minutes
of the Regular Board of Library Trustees Meeting held June 5, 2018. The question was
called and the motion carried unanimously

SUBJECT
Reestablishment of the Vernon Public Library
Recommendation:
Provide recommendations on a future Vernon Public Library and create a Library Ad Hoc Committee to
work with staff to determine a plan for the Vernon Public Library.
Background:
Municipal Code Article V. Section 2.32 et seq. establishes the Vernon Public Library and authorizes the
Board of Library Trustees, consisting of the five Council Members, to: make rules and prescribe duties
and powers; purchase books; and purchase property or equip buildings for such libraries.
The City previously had a small room that contained historical reference and donated books. Due to
minimal use, the records were stored offsite and the room repurposed for City use.
The proposed Fiscal Year 2020-2021 Budget includes $1000 for the development of a plan to
reestablish the Library.
Staff recommends creating an ad hoc committee of no more than two Trustees to work with staff to come
up with ideas to reestablish the Vernon Public Library and return to the Board of Library Trustees with
recommendations.

There is no fiscal impact associated with this report.
