19170322 Regular City Council Meeting - Minutes ADJOURNED REGULAR MEETING. An adjourned regular meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Oity of Vernonl county of Los Angelesl State of california. was held on the 21nd day of March 1917, at 2 0' clock P. M. of said day at the regular meeting place of said Board in said Oity of Vernonl which saidplaoe is the place fixed by ordi... nanoe for regular meetings of said Board to be held, pursuant to adj ournment from the regular meeting held the 20th day of March 1917 , There were present at suoh meeting Trustees.. stevens, Leonis, Kniffin and Furlong. There were absent from suoh meeting Trustee.. Durbin. President Trustee Furlong presiding. Th~ minutes of the meeting , held on March 6th.. 13th and 20th) , 1917 , were: lai d over. The matter of the formation of a sewer district for the con- struction of an outfall sewer along Santa Fe Avenue from East 49th Street to Slauson Avenue and thence Westerly along Slauson Avenue to a connection with the outfall sewer on Compton Avenue in the City of Los Angeles, was referred to the President of the Board and Trustee Leonis who were instructed to take the matter up with the City Engineer of Los Angeles. Mr. Knowlton. The Auditor's report and the report of the Treasurer were sub- mi t ted to the Finane e Commit tee. The Marshall was instructed to notify the Telephone Company that its excavations on 25th Street were caving in and that said company take steps to remedy such matter. Thereupon the following let~er was presented to the Board: "Vernon. California.. March 13th. 1917. Gentlemen: My attention has been called to existing conditions in our city, especially on Sunday. After careful investigation of reports I found: 1st. The best interests of the city demand that the entrance or doors now existing from the saloon to the baseball park and from the baseball park to the zoo or beer garden be closed all the time to 3/22/17 the pUblic.. and no entertainment I music or drinking beer or liquors be . allowed adjoining or back of any saloon and further that no public pic- nic be allowed wit hin -the city limit s of Vernon where liquors or beer ...1- q"8 ' 4 'X. " are served, sold or given away. 2nd. No Sunday wrestling match, boxing contests or baseball ga.me be allowed in Vernon where an entrance fee is charged to the public~ except the Pacific Coast Baseball League and the sale of beer or liquor is prohibited in any baseball park. 3rd. To charge a reasonable license for condutcing exhibition of boxing contests, with no intermission between bouts (which would mean a larger attendance of ladies and a boost for the game; and further to close all entrance or doors from the saloon to where the said exhibitions are held. 4th. The above recommendations are no't made to destroy anyones business but knowing it is for the best interest of the city and those that are engaged in said business; and further if these rules are not observed it shall be sufficient cause to revoke any licenses. The entrance and doors now existing from the saloon to the baseball park and from the baseball park to the zoo or beer garden be closed all the time to the public, and no entertainment, music or drinking beer or liquors be allowed adjoining or back of any saloon. That no public picnic be allowed within the city limits of Vernon where liquor or beer is served, sold or given away. 2. No Sunday wrestling match, boxing con tests or baseball game shall be allowed in the City of Vernon where an entrance fee is char8*d to the public, except the Pacific Coast Baseball League; and the sale or beer or liquor is prohibited in any baseball park; and~ 3. That a reasonable license fee to be provided for by ordinance at such time hereafter as the ordinance may be ordered drawn, be charged for conducting boxing contests; and that there shall be no intermission between bouts at said contests; and, ,j' .
