REGULAR MEETING.
A regular meeting of the Board of Trustees of the city of
VernonJ Oounty of Los Angeles) and State of CaliforniaJ was held
on the 3rd day of July ) 1917) at 2 0' clock P. M. of
said day at the regular meeting place of said Board in said city
of Vernon, whioh said time and plaoe is the time and plaoe fixed by
ordinanoefor regular meetings of the said Board to be held.
There were present at such meeting Trustees. Leonis, Furlong,
Knitfen, Durbin.
There were absent from suoh meeting Trustee) stevens.

1917 , were: read and approved.
Thereupon Mr. Kuhn reported that the total budget for the next
year amounts to and he asked that it be approved for $26,212.50. The
sum was aocordingly approved.
A petition was presented by Mr. Abbott for permission to start a
plant for the manufacture ot chemicals used in the spraying of fruit
trees.
He stated that he had two places picked out, one the Cheese-
brough lot and the other down near Mrs. Summers.
He was informed
that the Cheesebrough lot was inside the prohibitive district. and it
was suggested that he get a regular permit on the location near Mrs.
Summers and he would be granted the permit. which is inside the proper
district.
The Clerk made a report on the vouchers held up at the last meeting
for The Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company for $40.60 deposit. He
stated that the City has their check for $8.78 covering charges taken
out of thet40.60. and that the same can now be approved.
A petition was presented by Mr. Arnold the S8m& as he presented at
the previous meeting for a location for an oil refinery.

Trustee Durbin stated that he had been away quite a while. and on
his return found the streets on Sundays full of empty hottles in the
neighborhood of 38th and Santa Fe. and thereupon President Furlong
suggested that there was an ordinance which required dealers in liquor
to take care of such things. and if it were the dealers who were causing
the streets to be littered up, that the police had better inform them
to stop it and take care of it.
Thereupon Mr. Kniffen renewed the
motion that the resolution heretofore adopted preventing the drinking

of spirituous. vinous or malt liquors in the gardens attached to places
where such liquors were sold be rescinded.
Mr. Durbin seconded the motion. and thereupon the motion was put.
Trustees Durbin and Kniffen voted aye, and TrusteessFurlong and Leonis
voted nay. thereupon the President announced that the motion was lost.
Thereupon Trustee Leonis said that he would move that the sale of
bottled liquor on Sundays be forbidden. but no one seconded his motion.
Thereupon Trustee' Leonie moved that all places where liquor is
sold on Sundays be closed. but the motion was not seconded.
Thereupon the following letter was read addressed to the Merchants
National Bank:-
"June 30th. 1917.
~erchants National Bank.
Los Angeles. California.
Gentlemen:
You are hereby authorized to draw out of General Fund now on
deposit with your bank to the credit of the City of Vernon, and credit
to sinking fund the amount of $13.812.50. out of which sinking fund you
are hereby authorized to redeem bonds and coupons of the City of Vernon
due and payable July 1st. 1917.

Thereupon Ordinance No. 185 entitled "An Ordinance granting to the
Atohison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad Company a f~anohise for a spur
track across Twenty-sixth Street east of Boyle Avenue for the purpose
of serving the Stauffer Chemical Company" was read the second time and
adopted.
Thereupon it was ordered that soreens be provided for the City
Hall sO as to keep out flies, mosquitos, etc, and the Clerk was ordered
to provide the same, providing the same did not exceed $100.00.
Thereupon Mr. Sherman appeared before the Board and represented
that he appeared in the interest of the Polish Libra.ry Association and
asked permission to hold a private entertainment in the gardens adjoin-
ing the place run by Mr. Walter Scelaszkiawitz, and that it was in-
tended to give the proceeds to the Red Cross, and that they intended to
sell beer with the lunch to raise funds.
The matter was referred to
the President of the Board for action, and Mr. Furlong, President of the
Board said that he would refuse to allow the permit.
That he approved
the matter of entertain.ments for raising funds for the Red Cross, but
that knowing the conditions existing at the point indicated, and a
desire to sell beer in conneotion therewith, he didn't think it just
the proper thing to do.
Thereupon the following statement was read from the Sewer Depart-
ment of the Engineer's Offioe of the City of Los Angeles covering the
preliminary estimate of cost for the City of Vernon Slauson Avenue
Intercepting Sewer:
