19170717 Regular City Council Meeting - Minutes REGULAR MEETING. A regular meeting of th~ Board of Trustees of the city of Vernon I Oounty of Los AngelesJ and State of Californial was held on the 17th day of July I 19171 at 2 0' clock P. M. of said day at the regular meeting place of said Board in said city of Vernon. which said time and place is the time and place fixed by ordinance for regular meetings of the said Board to be held. There were present at such meeting TrusteesJ Furlong. Leonis, Durbin and Kniffen. and City Attorney Williams. There were absent from such meeting Trustee, stevens. President Trustee Furlong presiding. Tbe minutes of the meeting held on July 3rd, 191 7 , were: read and approved. Thereupon Ordinance No. 186 entitled "An Ordinance fixing the amount of money necessary to be raised by taxation upon taxable property in the City of Vernon, as a revenue to carryon the va~ious departments of said City for the current 'e~. not to exceed the limit fixed by law and to pay the bonded or other indebtedness of said City" was given its first reading~ and being so read was passed. Thereupon the following petition was presented by Mr. Daum: If June 2 nd, 1917. To the Honorable Board of Trustees, of the City of Vernon, Ce.1ifornia. Gentlemen: We, the undersigned resprectfully petition your Honorable Body to improve 46th street from Pacific Boulevard to the easterly terminus, with cement curbs, 12' cement gutters. and an asphalt pave- ment with a concrete base. Said improvements to be made under the "1911 Act". (Signed) Factory Site Company. By W. H. Dawn. Mgr. Also the following petition was presented by Mr. Dawn: "June 2nd, 1917 , To the Honorable Board of Trustees of the City of Vernon. California. , \ 1 Gentlemen: We. the undersigned respectfully petition your Honorable Body to improve Pacific Boulevard from Santa Fe Avenue to Fruitland Avenue with cement curbs~ 12' cement gutters, and an asphalt pavement with a concl"ete base. Drane, By W. H. Daum Both petitions were laid over until the next meeting. Thereupon the fOllowing letter was read from W.:.r. Ed R. Maier, of the Maier Brewing Company: "July 17, 1917. To the Honorable Board of Trustees, City of Vernon, California. Gentlemen: Owing to the fact that the distribution of my mother's Estate will occupy my time this afternoon, I will be unable to personally attend your meeting; therefore, I must authorize Mr. Howard Lorenz to take up the matter of adjusting our difficulties at my Park. As you gentlemen know, I am a more or less busy man with ~y other affairs and cannot find sufficient time to look after the Park. It represents quite an investment on my part, about Seventy-five Thous- and Dollars, so if you gentlemen cannot see your way clear to adjust matters so that they will run smoothly and so tha.t I can derive Borne income from this investment, you will make it necessary for me to make a deal with Mr. Lorenz so that I will not have to worry about conditions This I must do this week if I am not allowed to operate the Park. Hoping that you will see the conditions I have been laboring under and tha.t you will give me the relief which I am sure I have coming to me a.nd thanking you for all past favors, I beg to remain, Yours sincerely, Ed. R. Maier" Mr. Lorenz appeared before the Board and stated that he rep- resnted !vIr. Ma.ier and that the Basebe,ll Park represented an investment of about $75,000.00 and that 1~. Maier would not maintain the park unless he was permitted to ha.ve other teams use the Park except the Pacific Coast League. Mr. Durbin asked if there ~~asn't a shooting scrape at one of the ball games between colored teams, and Mr. Lorenz stated tha.t the shooting was done by colored people in the grandstand, but that it had nothing to do with the game, and that it wa.s their in- tent ion to operate the Park in any way satisfactory to the Board and 111//> (2) 01""....'1-"', 1":: ~ if keep the best element. meeting. T~. Leonis stated that on account of the lack of water the Board was not ree.dy a.t this time to consider a proposition of this kind. Mr. Arnold renewed his petition for an oil refinery, but no action was taken. Mr. Leonis said they would try and get together and give him a. decision by the next meeting. Mr. Daum presented a map of Tract No. 2964 and asked that it be accepted and Qrdered filed for record, but the seme was returned to him for correction. lEr. MeCurcly' also presented a map of Tra.ct No. 3226, which was sub- mitted for approval. . Upon motion by :Mr. Durbin the same was approved and ordered certified and filed for record. City Engineer Mr.McCurd~lso presented a map showing improvements he wanted made in East 37th street. The same was ordered laid over for report from the Ci ty Engineer, upon which to clraw an ordina.nce providing for such improvements. Thereupon 1~. Kniffen renewed the motion that the resolution here- tofore adopted preventing the drinking of spiritous, vinous or malt liquors in the gardens attached to places where such liquors were sold be rescinded. Mr. Dur1)in moved that the matter be postponed until the next meeting when the matter could be taken up in connection with the baseball park business.
