REGULAR MEETING.
A regular meeting of the Board of Trustees of the city of
Vernonl Oounty of Los AngelesJ and State of California, was held
on the 16th day of October , 1917 , at 2 0' clock P.M. of
said day at the regular meeting plaoe of said Board in said city
of Vernon, whioh said time and plaoe is the time and plaoe fixed by
ordinanoe for regular meetings of the said Board to be held.
There were present at such meeting Trustees, Furlong, Kniffin,
Durbin, Stevens and Leonis.
There were absent from suoh meeting Trustee, None.
President Trustee J. J. Furlong
presiding.
The minutes of the meeting , held on October 2nd,
1917 , were: read by the Clerk
and upon motion duly made, seconded and carried, were approved.
Upon motion duly made, seconded and carried, draft of an
ordina.nce entitled /tAn ordinance regulating the holding and licensing
of sparring exhibitions and boxing contests in the City of Vernon and
providing a. license fee therefor and repealing an ordinance entitled
fAn ordinance regulating the holding of. sparring exhibitions or boxing
contests in the City of Vernon' approved :March 30th, 1908,n was laid
over .
The following resolution of intention was introduced and read
by the Clerk~
HRESOLUTION l~O. 158.
RESOLUTION OF INT~iTION TO CLOSE UP, VACATE
Al~IJ lLBAlmOn A CERTAIl'J ALLEY.
HESOLVED that the public interests and convenience require and
that it is the intention of the Board of Trustees of the City of Vernon
California, to close up, vacate and abandon all portions of that
certain alley in the H. M. Ames Su"bdivision of the Glassel Tract in
the City" of Vernon, running through Blocks Ten (lO},Eleven (ll),
and Twelve (12), said alley running eastwardly and westwardly, parallel
with San Antonio Avenue, formerly called George Street.
That the
exterior boundaries of the district of land to be affected by the
vacating and abandoning of said alley are specified and declared as
follows, to-wit:
Commencing at a point in the eastern line of a certain alley
running north and south 155 feet more or less east of the eastern
line of Santa Fe Avenue at the southwes~ corner of said Block 12 in

the northern boundary line of San Antonio Avenue, sometimes called
George street; thence eastwardly along said northern boundary line
of said San .Antonio Avenue to the southeast COTner of said Block 10;
thence in a northerly direction along the east boundary of said Block
10 to said east and west alley, which it is proposed to vacate and
abandon; thence north to the northern city limit of the said City of
Vernon; thence westerly along the northern boundary line of said City
of Vernon to its intersection with the east line of said north and
south alley; thence south along the east line of said north and south
alley to the point of cO~ilencement, excepting therefrom so much of
said land as is now a part of any public street or alley.
The I~Iarshal of the City of Vernon is hereby directed to post
notices of this resolution of intention in three of the most public
and conspicuous places in the City of Vernon, there being no news-
paper published or printed in the City of Vernon, and as the City of
Vernon has no street superintendent, the City Marshal is hereby
directed to post the notices of the passage of this resolution.
I hereby certify that the foregoing resolution was passed by
the Board of Trustees of the City of Vernon, Califor.nia, on the/6 ~

Upon motion of Trustee Stevens, seconded by Trustee ?2niffin, said
resolution of Intention, No. 158, was adopted by the following vote:
Ayes: Trustees Stevens, Durbin, Leonis, lilliffin and Fnrlong.
Hoes: Hone.
Draft of an ordinance granting to the Union Oil Company a
franchise to operate its oil pipe lines in the City of Vernon, was
laid over for further consideration.
Draft of an ordinance was introduced and read fer the first time
entitled ;rAn ordinance creating the office of City Attorney of' the

City of Vernon, providing for the filling of such office by appointment
of the Board of Trustees and prescribing the qualifications, duties,
powers and compen.sa.tion thereof.lI
Application of N. H. McLean for permission to raise hogs in
the City of Vernon, was laid over.
Application of P. J. Durbin for permission to handle live stock,
etc., etc., in the City of Vernon, was laid over.
Communication from B. F. Goodrich Rubber Company dated September
20th, 1917~ Was taken under consideration, and the City Clerk was
instructed to communicate to them the City of Vernon's acceptance of
their offer to furnish free railroad crossing warning signs.
Communication from 1tr. J. B. Weil dated August 30th, 1917, was
read by the Clerk, and upon motion of Trustee Leonis seconded by
Trustee Stevens, was ordered filed by the following vote:
Ayes: Trustees Furlong, Stevens, Leonis, Kniffin and Durbin.
Noes: None.
Communication of Liberty Loan Committee read by the Clerk, and
upon motion duly made, seconded and carried, the City Clerk was in-
structed to write said Committee advising them that the rate of
taxation of the City of Vernon does not provide a surplus which could
be utilized for the purpose requested.
. Circular from Merchants Financial Chronicle of New York asking

for information with regard to bonded indebtedness, etc., of the City
of Vernon, Was read by the Clerk, and upon motion duly made, seconded
and carriecl the Clerk was instructed to act in the matter.
Draft of an ordinance was introduced and read by the Clerk,
entitled "An ordinance declaring the intention of the Board of Trustees
of the City of Vernon to close up, vacate and abandon for public
street purposes a portion of 46th street in the City of Vernon,"
:Draft of an ordinance was introduced and read by the Clerk,
entitled "An ordinance declaring the intention of the Board of Trustees
of the City of Vernon to close up, vacate and abandon, for street and
alley purposes, Third street and two certain alleys in the Hay Tract
Addition to Nadeau Park in the City of Vernon."

RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE CITY OF V~~JON

PURPOSES, THAT CERTAnr .ALLEY IN BLOCK 37 OF THE HUNTINGTOll PARK
EXTENSION NO.2 TRACT IN THE CITY OF VERNON AND SPECIFYING THE
EXTERIOR BOUNDARIES OF THE DISTRICT OF LM~D TO BE AFFECTED OR
BENEFITED BY SAID WORK OR IMPROVEMENT.
RESOLVED~ that it is the intention of the Board of Trustees
of the City of Vernon to order the following work or improvement to
be done, to-wit:
To close up, vacate and abandon for alley purposes, that certain
alley running Northerly and Southerly from the Southerly line of Forty-
Eighth street to the Northerly line or ]'orty-ninth street between
Malabar street and Pacific Boulevard in Block 37 of the Huntington
Park Extension No.2 Tract in the City of Vernon, County of Los
Angeles, State of California, as per map recorded in Book 11, page 6
of Maps, Records of said County and State.
And said Board of Trustees does hereby determine and delcare
that said proposed work or improvement will affect and benefit the
lands and district, the exterior boundaries of which are hereby
specified and declared to be as follows, to-wit:
Commencing at the Southwest corner of Lot 17, Block 37 of
Huntington Park Extension No.2 Tract in the City of Vernon, County
of Los Angeles, State of California, as per map recorded in Book 11,
page 6 of Maps, Records of said County and State; thence Easterly
along the Southerly boundary line of said Block 37 to the Southeast
corner of Lot 1 of said Block 37; thence Northerly along the
Easterly boundary line of said Block 37 to the Northeast corner of
Lot 6 of said Block 37; thence Westerly along the Northerly boundary
line of said Block 37 to the Northwest corner of Lot 18 of said Block
37; thence Southerly along the Westerly boundary line of said Block
37 to the point of beginning; excepting therefrom so much of said

street; on the East by Pacific Boulevard; on the South by Forty-ninth

There being no street superintendent or superintendent of streets
in and for the City of Vernon, the City Marshal of said City is hereby
appointed and designated as the person to post notices of the passage
of this resolution at the places and in the manner required by law
to be posted by the street superintendent, and in addition thereto~
to post and keep posted for So period of four successive \veeks, copies
of notice of the passage of this resolution in three of the most public
places in said city~ there being no daily, weekly or semi-weekly
newspaper printed, published and circulated in said city.
I hereby certify that the foregoing resolution of intention was
adopted by the Board of Trustees of the City of Vernon at a regular
meeting thereof held on the (' Kday of October, 1917.

said resolution of intention, No. 159, was passed and adopted by the
following vote:
Ayes: Trustees Kniffin, Durbin, Stevens, Leonis and Furlong.
noes: Hone.
Mr. Daum of the Factory Site Company appeared before the Board
asking that resolution be passed to file his map, and inquiring what
action the Board intended taking with regard to paving of Pacific
boulevard.
Upon motion of Trustee Leonis, seconded by Trustee Kniffin,
and carried by the following vote, the matter of improvement of Pacific
boulevard was referred to President Trustee J. J. Furlong with full
power to act.
Ayes: Trustees Leonis, Durbin, Stevens and Kniffin.
Hoes: None.

The matter of map of the Factory Site Company, \vas referred to
next regular meeting of the Board.
Upon motion duly made and seconded, City Attorney Harry A.
Chamberlin Was instructed to appear for and represent the City of
Vernon in an a.ction of the County of Los Angeles vs. Cities of
Alhambra, et al., said motion receiving the following vote:
Ayes: Trustees ]llrlong, Leonis, Stevens, Y~iffin and Durbin.
Noes;. IJone.
Upon motion made by Trustee Durbin, seconded by Trustee Kniffin
and ca.rried by the following vote, the Gi ty Marshal was instructed
and authorized to cancel all licenses, delinquent and othervlise,
which in his opinion were uncollectible.
Ayes;. Trustees Furlong, Leonis, Stevens, Durbin and Kniffin.
Noes: None.
Clerkfs Financial statement of the City of Vernon for month
of September, 1917, read by the Clerk, and upon motion of Trustee
Durbin, seconded by Trustee Kniffin, same was approved by the follow-
ing vote:
Ayes: Trustees Leonis, Furlong, Durbin, Stevens and Kniffin.
Noes: None.
Mr. Walter Szelaszkiewicz appeared before the Board in response
to SUL1mOns to show cause why his liquor license should not be
revoked, and after some discussion Mr. Leonis moved that the matter
be referred to a Committee of the whole, which motion was seconded
by Trustee Stevens, and carried by the following vote:
Ayes: Trustees Furlong, Stevens, Durbin, Kniffin and Leonis.
Hoes: none.
