A regular meeting of the Board of Trustees of the City of
Vernon, Oounty of Los Angeles, and State of California, Was held
on the 6th day of March , 191 8, at 2 0' clock P. M. of
said day at the regular meeting place of said Board in said city
of Vernon. which said time and plaoe is the time and plaoe fixed by
ordinance for regular meetings of the said Board to be held.
There were present at suoh meeting Trustees Furlong, )Kniffin,
Leonis, Durbin and Stevens. ·
There were absent from such meeting Trustee, None.

and upon motion duly made, seconded and carried, were approved.~_/
Draft of an ordinanoe, being Ordinance No. 200, entitled "An
Ordinance regulating and licensing the sale, serving, or giving away
of spirituous, vinous, malt, or mixed intoxicating liquors in the City
of Vernon and repealing Ordinance No.6, adopted November 12th, 1906;
Ordinance No. 28, adopted February 15th, 1909; Ordinanoe No. 78,
adopted April 23rd, 1912; Ordinance Ro. 84, adopted June 18, 1912;
Ordinance No. 85, adopted June 18, 1912; Ordinanoe No. 103, adopted
February 4th, 1913, and Ordinance No. 137, adopted July 28th, 1914,
and any and all other ordinanoes and parts of ordinances in conflict
herewith," was read for the second time.
On motion of Trustee Leonis, seconded by Trustee Durbin, said
ordinance was passed and adopted by the following vote~
Ayes: Trustees Furlong, Leonis, Kniffin and Durbin.
Noes: Trustees none.
REGULAR MEETING.
Abs_nt: Trustee Stevens.
Applioation of Am,;ican Alloy and Chemical Company for permit to
operate chemical manufaoturing plant, laid over.
Application of Leviathan Mines Company, for permit to operate
ore treatment plant, laid OTero
Petition of property lowners and lessees in the City of Vernon,

dated November 2nd, 1917, 'for an extension of water main from 28th
street and Santa Fe avenue to the North City limits on Santa Fe avenue
was read by the Clerk.
The Clerk .~~ instructed to communicate with the South Los Angeles

Land & Water Company, asking them whether or not they intend to
supply this water service as requested.
Contracts with Los Angeles Paving Company for the improvement
of East 27th and East 37th streets, were referred to City Attorney
Chamberlin.
At this time Trustee Stevens entered the Chamber and took his
seat.
Building permit was granted to West Coast Kalsomine Company,
to erect Kalsomine factory on property on East 26th street in the City
of Vernon.

City Clerk was instructed to cash all checks accompanying
applications for permission to operate certain businesses, as the same
are received.
Communication read by the Clerk from Arthur G. Newton, dated
February 18th, 191.8, requesting the Board of Trustees to take such
action as would remove the cloud on his title to certain land in the
City of Vernon, by reason of alleged overlap of portion of Center
avenue; but no action was taken.
Trustee Durbin reported with regard to fence which had been
erected across Boyle avenue, stating that in his opinion, to insure the
proper degree of safety at this point, two more boards like th~ one at
present standing, should be installed.
Mr. ~Wxson, representing organization of oil refineries,

appeared before the Board urging ,that some action be taken to provide
fire protection to these industries, as well as other industries in
tho City of Vernon. After discussion, Mr. Leonis moved that this
matter be referred to a committee of the whole for investigation,
which motion was seconded by Trustee Stevens and carried by the
following vote:
Ayes: Trustees Furlong, Kniffin, Leonis, Stephens and Durbin.
Roes: Trustees none.
Map of Tract no. 3271 as submitted by Howard Huntington, for
approval, was referred to City Engineer McCu~dy for his report thereon.
Trustee Leonis spoke of conditions along the West bank of the
Los Angeles river north of 26th street, stating that if the dumping
of tin cans, refuse, etc., were allowed to continue as at present
he was afraid the current of the river would thereby be thrown against
the East bank thereof, thus endangering the safety of the City1s
bridge across the river at 26th street. After discussion this matter
was referred to the City Attorney.
Draft of an ordinance was introduced and read by the Clerk,
entitled "An ordinance calling a general municipal election to elect
three trustees, a clerk and a treasurer of the City of Vernon, estab-i~

lishing and defining the boundaries of a consolidated election precinct\V~
therefor, designating the polling place thereof, prescribing the Hotic.e ,I )

to be given of said election, and repealing Ordinance Ho. 16, adopted//
February 10, 1908."

Upon motion duly made, seconded and carried, an adjournment was
taken until Monday morning, March l~th, ~918, at 11:00 olclock.
