19th OF OCTOBER 1925, AT 8 O'CLOCK P.M. AT
THE CITY ILI\.LL, VERNON, CALII'D RNIA.
The meeting was called to order by the City Clerk, T.J.Furlong, at 8 o'clock P.M.
The Trustees present were:
Levy, Durbin and Leonis.
The Trustees absent were:
Furlong and Kniffin.
The Ci t~r Clerk requested a nomination for chairman pro-tem for the evening,
owing to the absence of the President J.J.Furlong.
Moved by Levy, seconded by Durbin, that Trustees Leonis act as Chairman pro-tern
for the evening. Motion carried.
At this time the City Clerk reported that he had sealed bids, pursuant to
advertisement, for trenching in the Streets of the City of Vernon.
Moved by Levy, seconded by Durbin that the bids for the trenching be opened.
Motion carried.
The City Clerk read the bid of GeoJ:'ge Mitchell Company and the Thomas Haverty
Company.
Moved by Levy and seconded byDurbin, that all bids be referred to the City
Engineer for checking and report at the next regular meeting. Motion carried.
The City Clerk annOlmced that he had bids on Ford Motor Trucks, pursuant to
advertisement.
Moved by Levy, seconded by Durbin that the City Clerk open the bids. Motion HOe
carrthed.
The following bids were read: J.A.Nadeau Company an~ Frank T. Hicket Company.
Moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that Sffine b referred to the City Engineer
for immedmate checking and report. Motion carried.
The City Engineer upon checking the bids, receramended that the Frank T. Hickey
Company be awarded the contract for furnishing a truck as his bid was the
lowest.
Moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that he contract for furnishing Ford Truck
to the City of Vernon be awarded to the Frank T. Hickey Company at the price
nam d in his bid, to-viit: ~p666.80. Motion carried.
At tl1is time the City Clerk announced that he had one bid in responce to
advertisement for a calculating machine for the City.
Moved by Levy, seconded by Durbin, that the bid be opened. Motion carried.
The bid on the Monroe Calculating Machine Co., was opened and read.
Moved By Durbin, sedonded by Levy, that the bid be received and the contract
awarded to the Monroe Calculating Machine Comoany for the furnishing of a
calculatimg m~Chine to the City of Vernon. Motion carried.
Minutes of the previous meetings were then read.
Moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that the minutes be approved as read.
Motion carried.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS:
Application for a franchise by Department of Water & Power of the City of
Los Angeles was read.

full board. Motion carried.
Ordinance No. 370: An ordinance granting a spuD track franchise to the Southern
Pacific Company across Santa Fe Avenue to serve the Boyle Dayton Company, was
read for the second reading.
Moved by Levy, seconded by Durbin, that same be laid over 'till the next regular
meeting. Motion carried.
Application for a permit by Los Angeles Railway Company to construct landings on
Pacific Blvd., to discharge and take on passengers, from their street cars,
was read.
At this time the City Engineer recom.Elelded that the permit be gran~ed. Motion '.... 'i
carried.
NEW BUSINESS:
The City Clerk presented two easements executed by the Los Angeles Railway Co.,
granting to the City of Vernon the right to lay water main under their tracks.
Moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that the permits be accepted and the
Chairman of the Board and City Clerk be instructed to execute the same.
Motion carried.
RepoBn of H.Il.Isaacs, regarding inspection of fomnite system installed by
Wilshire Oil Co, was read.
Moved by Levy, seconded by Durbin, that the report be received and filed.
Motion carried.
Communication from the Pacific Coas t rrrade and COiliilerce Co., was read.
Moved by Durbin,seconded by Levy that same be filed. Motion carried.
Communication from Eureka Fire Hose Co., was read.
Moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that same be filed. Motion carried.
Report of state Board of Health was read.
Moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy that same be filed. Motion carried.
Communication from the SOl.J.therD Pacific Compp.ny regarding opening of 49th Street
was read.
Moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that same be filed. Motion carried.
Communication from the Comrnercial National Bank was read.
Moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that same be filed. Motion carried.
Communication from Owen S. Skyes was read.

Communication from the Vernon Fixture & Cabinet Co., regarding drainage on
St. Charles Street was read.
Moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that same be referred to the City Engineer
and the City Clerk be instructed to notify Vernon Fixture & Cabinet Co., of the
action of the Board. Motion carried.
Application No. 671: being an application of the Southern California Telephone
Company to replace one anchor to exictingpole on the north side of Randolph
street, west of Ma~vood Avenue was read.
Moved by Levy, seconded by Durbin, that the application be filed and permit
granted. Motion carried.
Application No. 672; being an application of the Southern California Telephone
Company, to place approximately 46 feet of 3" creosoted wood duct on the east
side of Second Street, north of Slauson Avenue was read.
Moved by Levy, seconded by Durbin, that the application be filed and permit
granted. Motion carried.
Application No. 673; being an application of tile Earle Hardware Company for
construction of a bla~ksmith shop at 2369 Esat 51st Street, was read.
Moved by Levy, seconded by Durbin, that the applicationbe filed and permit
granted. Motion carried.
Application No. 674; same being an application of the Owens Parks Lumber Co.,
to construct a lumber shed on their property was read.
Moved by Levy, seconded by Durbin, that the application be filed and permit
granted. Motion carried.
Application NO.675; being an application of the A-I Paint Remover Co., to const-
ruct a shop at 2000 Vernon Avenue 'Nas read.
Moved by Levy, seconded by Durbin, that the application bw filed and permit
granted.
Application No. 676; being an application by F. Schafer to construct a garage
at 2340 East 37th Street was read.
Moved by Levy and seconded by Durbin, that the application be filed and permit
granted. Motion carried.
Application No. 677; being an application of the Southern California Telephone
Company~ requesting permission to place 50 feet 3" creosoted wood duct at the
southwest corner of 25th and Alameda Streets Vias read.
Moved by Levy, seconded by Durbin, that the application be filed and permit
granted. Motion carried.
Report of the Police Deaprtment was read.

Resolution No. 389; A resolution of the Board of Trustees of the City of Vernon
ordering the City Engineer to make and deliver to the Street Superintendent a
diagram of the improvement district in Resolution of Intention No. 257 and
further ordering the street superintendent to maJe an assessment was read.

Moved by Levy, seconded by Durbin, that Resolution No. 389 be adopted.

At this time the City Clerk announced that it was the day set for the hearing
of protestson the East 26:bh Street Sewer as specified in Resolution of Intention
No. 387 and further informed the Board that there Were no written protests
filed with him. The Chairman of the Board then asked if there were any persons
in the audience who had and objections to the doing of the work set forth in the
Notice of Thlprovement and in Resolution of Intention No. 387. Hearing no responce
Resolution No. 390 was intorduced, same, being are solution ordering the work
specified in Resolution No. 387 was read.
Moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that.Resolution No. 390 be adopted. Motion
carried.
Resolution ~o. 391: A Resolution of the Board of Trustees of the City of Vernon
adopting plans and specifications for the paving of Pacific Boulevard, w~s read.
Moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that Resolution No. 391 be adopted. Motion
carried.
R:,:solution No. 392: A Resolution approving the map of asses:sment district for the
improvement of Pacific Boulevard of the City was read.
Moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that Resolution No.392 be adopted. Motion carrie
Resolution No. 393; A Resolut:i.on of the Board of 'J.'rustees declaring their intention
to order certain work and improvement on Pacific Blvd.,~n said City was read.
Moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy that Resolution No. 392 be adopted. Motion carried
At this time the City Engj.neer recommended that the contract for the furnishing
of conduits as specified in the notice inviting sealed proposals, being item
l,2,3,4 and item 5-A, and items 6 and 7, be awarded to the Standard Underground
Cable Company, and that all otller bids for the furnishing of material described
in these items be rejected.
Moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that the reco~~endation of the City Engineer
be concurred in. Motion carried.
Moved by D::rbin, seconded by Levy that the City Engineer be lJIIlpowered to buy
1500 feet of triple braid weather-proof wiring at 19f cents a pound. Motion
carried.
Comrnunication from the Southern Cali ornia Meat Packers Ass&:n was read.
Moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that same be filed.
Mr. Levy reported that he had a very successful meeting with the packers of the
Ci ty of Vernon and recomrnended that his report be filed.
Moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy that same be filed. Motion carried.
Moved by Levy, seconded by Durbin, that the City Clerk be instructed to
advertise for a tableto be used for the City Council, to be 180' long and 48"
wide. Motion carried.
Resolution No. 394: Accepting a deed from the Los Angeles Railway Company, was read.
Moved by Levy and seconded by Durbin, that same be adopted. Motion carried.

At this t ;me the City Engineer recommended that 'we/but a pump from the American
Pump Company, said pump to be known as a sump pump for $260.00.
Moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that the City Engineer be instructed to buy
the sump pump. Motion aarried.

At this time demands were read on the general fund in the sum of$5078.55;
on ~he Water Bond Fund No.l$3827.81; and on the Water Bond Fund No.2
$~,2Q,49~4d79and on the Sewer Bond Fund No.1 ~~834.43.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy th~ the demands be allowed and
warrants be drawn upon the respective funds. Motion carried.
There being no further business the meeting adjourned.
