MINUTES OF A REGULAR 1.m:ETING OF THE BOARD OF
TRUSTEES OF THE CITY OF VERNON HELD ON THE 15th day of
FEBRUARY, 1926, AT THE CITY HALL. VERNON, CALIFORIUA.
The meeting was called to order by the President.
J. J. Furlong. at eight o'clock P.M.
The trustees present were: Levy, Durbin, Leonis
and Furlong.
The trustees absent were: Mr. Kniffin,
The minutes of a regular meeting of February 1st
were read.
Mowed by Durbin, seconded by Le~, that same be
approved as read. Motion carried.
At this time the City Clerk reported that he had
sufficient bids upon his desk for the doing of certain work
around the City Hall grounds.
Moved by Durbin, seconded by Leonis, that the City
Clerk be instructed to open the bids, Motion carried.
The following bids were received: Bid from the L.A.
Paving Company and bid from the Griffith Company.
The City Engineer reported that the bid of the
Griffith Company was the lowest of the two bids and recommended
that the contract for the doing of the work be awarded to the
Griffith Company.
Moved by Levy, seconded by Durbin, tha.t all bids be f
rejected except the bid of the Griffith Company and they be
awarded the contract. Motion carried.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS:
At this time the City Engineer reported that the bids
received by the City and referred to him on regulators had been
examined by him and the bid of the Ladewig Company was lowest
and recommended that the contract be awarded to them.
Moved by Levy ,seconded by Durbin, that the recommenda-
tion of the City Engineer be adopted and all bids rejected except }
the bid of the Ladwwig Company for regulators. Motion carried.
The City Engineer again reported that the bids on
meters submitted to the Board and referred to him had been
examined by him and that the bid of the Hersey Meter Company
was the lowest responsible bidder and recol1U'nended that the
contract be awarded to the Hersey Meter Company.
l!oved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that all bids be \
rejected except the bid of the Hersey Meter Company and that v
they be a.wa.rded the contract for the furnishing of meters to
the City. Motion carried.
At this time the City Engineer repprted that the
Austing Company would not accept the contract for the furnishing
of street machinery to the City and recommended that the Frank
T. Hickey Company, the next lowest bidder, be awarded the con-
tract.
Moved by Levy, seconded by Durbin, that the recommenda-
tion of the City Engineer be concurred in and the contract awarded
to the Frank T. Hickey Company. Mot ion carried. 1_7
The City Engineex reported that the deed submitted
by the Industrial Centre Corporation covered the property desired
by the City for street purposes and rec~mmended that the deed be
ac cep t ed.
At this time Trustee Durbin introduced Resolution
No. 425. a resolution a.ccepting a deed :from Industrial Centre
Corporation. and moved the adoption of the resolution. It was
duly seeonded by ~. Levy and adopted.
NEW BUSINESS:
Communication :from .Tulia Hard requesting permission
to operate a lunch stand at 53rd and santa Fe Avenue was rea~
be denied.
Moved by Levy, seconded by Durbin, that the request

Communi ca t i on from the Cowan Show Case a.hd Fixture
Company in reference to water connection was read.
Moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that same be
filed. Motion carried.
Circular letter from the California Safety Signal
Corporation was read.
Moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin, that same be
referred to the City Clerk requesting said company to furnish
all facts connected with the Safety signals to the City. Motion
carried.
COL~unication from the Southern Pacific Company
in reference to a sewer line under their tracks on Center Avenue
was read. Upon the report of the City Attorney that the contract
also submitted was legal in form, it was
Moved by Levy, seconded by Durbin, that the contract
be approved and the City Clerk and Chairman of the Board be in-
structed to execute same on the part of the City. Motion carried.
Communication from C. B. Daniels requesting permission
to sell pencils and shoe strings in the City without taking out a.
license, was read.
Moved by Levy, seconded by Durbin, that the communica-
tion be filed. Motion carried.
Report of the State Board of Health wa.s read.
Moved by Levy, seconded by Durbin, that same be filed.
Motion carried.
Gommumdcation from Roy E. Link requesting a position
in the water department was read.
Moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin, that same be
filed. Motion carried.
Communications from Luer Packing Camp~ny, A. E. Klubin-
kin Packing Co., California. Dressed Beef Co., Associated Meat Co.,
Bewmarket Company, Standard Packing Compa.ny, Union Packing Company,
Baldridge Packing Company, Globe Packing Co. Inc., Merchants Packing
Co... Coast Packing Co.., Los Angeles Pa.cking Co. Southern California
Meat Co. and United Dressed Bee! Co. were read, requesting pe~ission
to drive cattle from the stockyards to their respective plants.

Moved by Leonis, seconded by Levy. that all:Lcommunica.-
tions be referred to the City Attorney with instructions to notify
the packers that the Board of Trustees was anxious to pass the
necessary ordinance allowing this. provided the packers could agree
upon the portions of public streets which ca.ttle would cross and
further requesting the packers to furnish the legal description
of the streets crossed by the cattle driwers. Motion carried.
Report of the Police Department was read.
Moved by Levy. seconded by Durbin. that the report
be filed. Motion carried.
Communica.tions from the Filtrol Company. Marine
Refining Company,. MacMillan Petroleum Company,. CrystalL Oil
Company. Gilmore Oil Company, Wilshire Oil Company. Crescent
Refi:r:ling Company. and General Petroleum Company regarding the
disposition of acid sludge from their-plants were read.

The following applications for permits,. all having
the approval of the City Engineer, were read.
APPLICATION NO. 755: An a.pplication of Southern California
Gas Company for permission to repair the main at southeast
corner of 57th and 2nd Streets;
APPLICATION NO. 756: An application of Los Angeles Gas &
Electr.ic Corp. for an excava.tion permit to repair line at
38th and Alameda. Streets;
APPLICATI.OI-T NO. 751: An application of Los Angeles Gas &
Electric Corp. to make repairs at Vernon and Alameda Streets,
APPLICATION NO. 759: An applicatio-n by E. J. Conway at 5501 Santa
Fe Avenue for sewer connection;
APPLICATION NO. 761: An application by West Coast Knittimg Mills
for sewer connection;
APPLICATION NO. 762.: An application of Mechanical Pattern Works
for-elewer connection;
APPLICATION NO. 763: An a.pplication of Union Iron Works for a
building permit.

applications be filed and permits granted. 110tion carried.
At this time Mr. Leonis reported that Mr. Hill.
Secretary of Vernon Improvement Assoc~iation requested permission
to make a. sewer connection for property outside of tIE City 0 f
Vernon to the sewers of Vernon.
Moved by Va'. Durbin. seconded by Levy, that this
matter be referred to the City Engineer for investiga.tion a..nd
report at the next meeting.
ORDINAnCE NO. 374: An ordinance fixing the compensa.tion of the
Ci ty Treasurer at $45.00 per month, to take effect when tLe new
City Treasurer is elected at the next general municipal election
to be held on April 12. 1926, was read for first reading.
Moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin.. that Ord inance
No. 374 be passed for first reading. Motion carried.
lv!oved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that the Ci ty
Clerk be instructed to buy a high pressure valve to connect the
city owned property to the sewer. Motion carried.
At this time Trustee Durbin reported tha.t the
Woodward & Bennett Pac:ldng Company and the Newmarket Company
would move. their fence back 5 ft. 9 in., and build a sidewalk
thereon under the direction and supervision of the City, if
the Board desired it.
]foved by Leonis, seconded 'by Levy, that the City
Attorney be instructed to communicate with these two firms
requesting that they move their fence back as st~:ted in Mr.
Durbin's report and further requesting that they build their
own sidewalk. Motion carried.
The following demands were read: On the general
fund - $7,584.34; On water bond fund No. 2 - $26,176.38; On
the trust fund - $5.00; On Sewer Bond Fund No. 1 - $1.00;
:Moved by Levy, seconded by Durbin, that the demands
be allowed and warrants drawn upon the respective amounts. Motion
carried.
Moved by Levy, seconded by Durb~n, that the meeting
adjourn until Tuesday, February 23rd, at 8 o'clock P.M. Motion
carried.
