OF TRUSTEES OF TIm CITY OF v.tllRlTON HELD ON THE 1st
DAY OF NOVID,ffiER, 1926, AT THE CITY HALL OF THE CITY
OF VERNON, 4305 SANTA FE AVENUE, VERNON, CALIFORNIA.
The meeting was ca.lled to order by the President,
J'. J. Furlong, at 8 o'clock P. M.
The Trustees a.bsent were:

The minutes of the meetings of October 4, 11, 18,
and 19th, were read.
It was moved by Durbin and seconded by Leonis that
the minutes be approved as read. llotion carried.
Unfinished Business:
The communication from the Araerican Can Company
requesting the'llater Depa.rtment of the said City of Vernon
to sell the Grinnel Company some of the city pipe purchased
with bond money, which had been referred to the City Attor-
ney for his opinion on October 18, 1926, was again presented
to the Board..
At this time the City Attorney reported that in
his opinion the material referred to in the communication
could be used by the City in its water system, and doubted
the authority of the Board to sell this pipe to the Grinnel
Company, or any other person, and recor~nended to the Board
that they deny the request of the American Can Company.
It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Durbin
that the request of the American Can Company be denied.
Motion carried.
At this time the City Clerk announced that this
\v.as the time and place to which the matter of the confirma-
tion of the assessment of the Northwest Sewer District had
been continued, as said confirmation had been continued
from time tot irne at the request of the City Engineer,
owing to the fact that the street YTork was not completed.
At this time the City Engineer reported that the
street work in the Northwest Sewer District was now complete,
but H'ere were several matters of liens for the doing of
the said work that had not been paid, and recomrnended that
the matter of the confirmation of the assessment of the
Northwest Sewer District be laid over until the next regular
meeting, and tha.t in all probabilities at that time the
assessment would be ready for confirmation.
It was moved by Durbin and seconded by Leonis that
the recOImnendation of the City Engineer be complied wi tl:l",
and that the matter of the confirmation of the assessment
of the Northwest Sewer District be laid over until the next
regular meeting. I.totion carried.
New Business:
At this tUne the City Clerk announced that purusant
to public notice inviting sealed bids for the construction of
reinforced concrete pipe trenches" and iron gra.tings and
pump foundation, he lIDd received one bid, and that the same
was now on his desk.

It was moved by Durbin and seconded by Leonis
that the City Clerk be instructed to open the bid.
Motion carried.
At this time the City Clerk read the bid of the
W. M. Ledbetter Company, wherein said Company agreed to do
all of the work set forth in the Notice Inviting Bids for
the sum of One Thousand lUne Hundred lTinety Dollars ($1990.00)
for the work complete.
At this time the City Engineer stated to the Board
that this was a reasonable bid and recommended that the bid
be accepted.
It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Durbin that
the recommendation of the City Engineer be concurred in,
and that the bid of the'Tl. 1i1!. Ledbetter Com}!any to do the
work set forth in the notice Inviting Sealed Bids and in
the bid of said company be accepted, and that the Chariman
of the Board and the City Clerk be authorized to enter into
a contract for the doing of said work withW. M. Ledbetter
& Company. 11otion carried.
A communication from the General Petroleum Corpora-
tion,requesting the City of Vernon to advertise the ;sale of tle
franchise held by them under Ordinance :Ho. 379, was read.
It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Durbin that
the cownunication be filed, and that the request of the
General Petroleum Corporation be granted. :Motion carried.
A communication from the Post Office Department
regarding the lease of the old City Hall for a branch office
"was read.
It was moved by Leonie and seconded by Durbin that
the same be filed. Motion carried. '

A conmmnication from the Los Angeles Planning Com-
mission regarding Proposition No.3 was read.
It was moved by Durbin and seconded by Leonie that
the same be filed. JJfotion carried.
A communication from Joe Chutuk, sewer contractor"
request ingan addi t i anal tVlenty (20) day ext ensi on of time
in which to complete the vlork on the Northwest Sewer District
was read.
It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Durbin that
the time in which to complete the work be extended to November
15, 1926. Motion carried.
A communication from John J. Lynch, City Clerk of
the City of San Jose, regarding proposition No.2, was read.
It wa.s moved by Leonis and seconded by Durbin that
the sanle be filed. Motion carried.
A communication from the Fidelity & Deposit Company
regarding bonds was rea.d.
It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Durbin that
the same be filed. Motion carried.

An application from the Santa Fe Railway Company for a
franchise for the construction of two drill tracks across
Forty-ninth Street and one drill track across Chambers
Street Vlas read..
It was moved by Durbin and seconded by Leonis tl~t
the sarne be laid over until the next regular meeting. Motion
carried..

APPLICATION NO.. 934: Of the Southern California Utilities
Company for a permit to cross 55th Street at Santa Fe Avenue
with a pipe line was read.
It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Durbin that
the Sffine be laid over until the next regular meeting. Motion
ca.rried.
At the time the Fire Committee reported that they
had hired one fireman by the narne of Alfred ~. !Iart on pro-
bation to replace Roger u~rino who resigned, and that they
had also instructed the Fire Chief to purchase first aid
kits, and requested the approval of the action of the Com-
mittee.
It was moved by Durbin and seconded by Leonis that
the report of the Fire Committee be accepted and approved.

It W:3..S moved by Durbin and seconded by Leonis that
the City Clerk be instructed to notify the Southern California
Untilities Cor,~?any to lower their water pipes laid in the
alley between 37th and 38th Streets, running from Ross street
to the end of the alley near Santa Fe Avenue. Motion carried.
It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Durbin that ?
.the City Clerk be instructed to advertise for bids for the
furnishing of twelve inch line pipe. Motion carried. ~
Mr. Leonis reported that he had made an investigation
in reference to the Ma~vood Fire Department and found that
there was no tax. or assessment ever levied on that territory
recently annexed to the City of Vernon, known as the Central
:Manufactu~ing District, for the payment of the upkeep of
said Fire Department, a.nd recommended that the report be
a.ccepted and that the City of Yernon waive any right which
it may have in said Fire Department.
It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Durbin that
the report be received and complied with. Motion carried.
A,petition was su"cmitted by the Cutler Select Vend-
ing Machine Company to place vending machines in various placffi
in the City of Vernon.
It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Durbin that
the same be denies. Motion carried.
A cornnunication from the L. A. Paving Company re-
questing a sixty day extension of time in which to complete
the work on JZast Vernon Avenue was read..
It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Durbin that'
the same be granted. Motion carried.

the work on East 30th Street was read.
It was moved by Durbin and seconded by Leonis that
the ,saine be granted.. Motion carried.
A communication from the Pacific Ready Cut Homes Ine
requesting the oiling and grading of Boyle Avenue wa.s read.
It was moved by Durbin and seconded by Leonis that
the City Clerk be instructed to not tfy the Pacific Ready Cut
Homes Inc that the City was contemplating the improvement of
said street in the near futur e. Uoti on ca.rried.
At this time the City Engineer reported that the
property owners along 50th street and Seville Street had
requested and had all signed for the paving of these two
streets by private contract under City specifications, and
recommended that the same be allowed.
It was moved by Durbin and seconded by Leonis that
the property owners along 50th Street and Seville Street be
permitted to pave said streets under City specifications.
Moti on carried.
It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Durbin that ~ ~
the City Engineer and City Attorney immediately start pro- ~//
ceedings for the improvement of Fruitland Avenue from Santa ~
Fe to Downey Road, and that deed be :ta.ken for the -vYidening
of sa.id street~ to sixty feet, and that they start proceed-
ings for the opening and improvement on Boyle-1Ules .
also Boyle Avenue, 37th Street, and Alameda Street. Center,..
Street and Topeka Street. l.1otion carried.

of the City Engineer were read:

for sewer connection at Fruitland and Seville Ave.

building permit for construction of shops. Valuation $2050.00
APPLICATION No. 988:
at 26'76 Boyle Avenue.
Of J. Tomoda for construction of barn

~enlit for construction of automobile sheds. Valuation

that the applications be filed and 'permits granted. Mot ion

The report of the Police Department was read.
It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Durbin that
the same be filed. l.!otion cal~ried.
The ~eport of the Water Department was read.
It was moved by Durbin and seconded by Leonie
that the same be filed. Motion carried.
It was moved by Leonis and. seconded by Durbin that,/,
the sum of ~venty Thousand Dollars ($20,000.00) be tra.ns~ ~
ferred from the General Fund to the Vlater Bond Fund No.2, .,
said Twenty Thousand Dollars ($20,000.00) being the price of
the property nOVi occupied by the City Hall and grounds.

Demands on the General Fund in the sum of Four
Thousand Six Hundred Sixteen and 52/100 Dollars ($4,616.52)
were read.
It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Durbin that
the demands be allov/ed and warrants dranw. lJotion carried.

the meeting adjourn. Motion carried.
