TRUSTEES OF THE crTY OF VERNON EELD ON THE 3rd DAY
OF .JANUARY, 1927, AT TEE CITY HALL OF TEE CITY OF

The meeting was called to order by the President,
.J. J. Furlong, at 8o'clock P. M.
The Trustees present were:: Leonis J Durbin, Levy and
Furlong..
The Trustees absent were: Kniffin..
It was moved by Levy and seconded by :Durbin that the
minutes of December 6 a.nd 20. 1926, be laid over until the
next regular meeting. Motion carried.
The City Clerk reported that this wa.s the time and
place set for the hearing in the matter of the assessment on
Eeist Vernon Avenue, as per Resolution of Intention No. 460,
He further reported that there were no written appeals or
objections filed with him. The Board deemed it advisable that
the conf'irma.tion of the assessment be laid over until the next

It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Durbin that
the hearing on the assessment district for the improvement of
East Vernon Avenue be ladd over unt 11 the next regular meeting.
Motion carried.
The City Clerk reported that this was the time and

East 30th street, a.s per Resolut ion of Intent ion Bo.. 444. He
further reported that there were no written appea.ls or obj ect-
ions filed with him. The Boa.rd deemed it advisable tha.t the con-
firma.tion of the assessment be laid over until the next regula.r

the hearing on the assessment district for the improvement of
East 30th Street, be laid over until the next regular meeting.
Motion carried. .
A communica.tion from the California Rendering Company
requesting to operate and construct a. steam boiler on the rear
of their property projecting into the City of Vernon from East
25th street was read.
Moved by Leonis and seconded by Durbin that the same
be referred to the City Attorney to draft a letter to be signed
by the applica.ntthat in the event that the business that they
conduct becomes a. nuisance in the opinion of the Board of Trustees
they will immediately cea.se operation. Motion carried.
A communication in the form of a circular letter fro~
the Compton Chamber of Commerce regarding the, San Gabriel River
Dam was read.
It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Durbin that the
same be filed. Motion carried.

J'anuary 3, 1927.
A. eonnmmieatio'n from the Department of \Vater a.nd
Power of the City of Los Angeles requesting permission to,
extend their six inch water main along East 25th street in the
Ci ty of Vernon, to serve the Metals Refining Company and the
Seotts Union Sawdust Compa.ny was read.
It .as moved by Levy and seconded by Durbin that the
matter be refered to the City Engineering Department of the
City of Vernon. Votion carried.
An easement from the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe
Railway Company gra.nting a certain strip of their right of
way on Slauson Avenue to the City of Vernon for street pur-
poses was read.
It was moved by Leonie and seconded by Levy that the
~. ame be referred. to the City Engineer for checking a.nd report.
Motion carried.
". communication from the L. A. Paving Company re-
questing an extension of time of sixty days to complete the
paving of Vernon Avenue was read.
Moved by Leonis and seconded by Durbin .that the ~e
be granted. Motion carried.
A communication from the L.A. Pacing Company requesting
an extension of time of sixty days to complete the paving on
East 30th Street was read.
It was moved by Levy and seconded by Durbin that the
request be granted. Motion carried.
A communication from the Union Oil Company, reporting
that there were no permits issued to or from their pipe lines
or conduits constructed by said oompany under Ordinanoe Ro. 217
of the County of Los Angeles, was read.
It was moved by Levy and seoonded by Durbin tha.t the
aa.me be filed. Motion carried.
A. report of R.. R. Isaacs, Foamite inspeotor, on the
Foamite Fire System of the Gilmore Oil Company was read.
It wasmoved by Levy and seoonded by Durbin that the
same be filed. 1l0tion carried.
At this time the City Clerk reported that this was
the time and plaoe set for hearing of the protests on the
improvement of Alameda Street, and that no protests, either
oral or written had been filed in his office. The Chairman
of the Board then asked if there was anyone present who had
any objeotion t.o the improvement of Alameda Street, as oon-
templated in Resolution of Intention No. 474, and receiving
no response, whereupon Trustee Durbin introduoed
RESOLUTION_NO.. 475: A Resolution ordering the work done, and
moved its a.doption, which was seoonded by Leonis and carried.

A communication from the Southern California. Utilities
Company in reference to the removal or l.owering of their pipe
line in the all.ey between 37th and 38th streets was read.
It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Durbin that
the ma.tter be referred to the City A.ttorney, 'ltvith the instructions
to proceed to have the pipe lowered or removed. Motion carried.
At this time the Fire Commission reported and asked
tha.t their report be confirmed in the a.ppointment of T. S.
Patterson to the fire Department at a salary of One Hundred
Thirty Dollars ($130.00) per month. and Sylvester Duffy at a
salary of One Hundred Thirty Dollars [$130.00) per month. They
further reported that they had requested that the salary of
J"essie Mulvaney be increased to One Hundred sUtty Dollla.rs ($160.00}
per month f'rom the 1st day of J'anuary , 1927.
It was moved by Durbin and seconded by Levy that the
report of the Fire Commission be a.ccepted and that the request
for the appointment of the men therein stated be approved, and
that the salary of J'esse Mulvaney be increased to One Hundred
1\i~'tty Dollars ($lGO.aa) per month.. Motion carried.
It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Levy that the
City Attorney prepare ordinance amending Section 2 of Ordinance
No. 3llif-r.. by. inserting the "Chief of Fire Department, among
others." )loti on carried.
The report of the Police Department was read.
It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Durbin that
the same be filed. Mot ion carried.
The report of the vater Department was read.
It was moved by Durbin and seconded by Levy that the
eame be filed. Motion carried.

ORDIUA.NCE NO. 393:, An o.rdinance granting to the GeneraJ. Petroleum
Corporation of Ca,lifornia. a. franchise, granting sa.id corporation
the right to lay and maintain pipes for transportation and dis-
tribution of mineral oils and products thereof, and to con~truct
and mainta.in a telephone line in connection therewith through
the public streets of the City of Vernon was read. for secomd
reading.
It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Levy that
Ordinance No. 393 be passed for second reading.. lloti on carried.
ORDINA1WE NO.. 393:: An Ordinance granting to the General Petroleum
Corporation of California a fra.nchise, granting said corporation
the right to l~ and maintain pipes for transportation and dis-
tribution of mineral oils and products thereof, and to construct
and maintain a telephone line in connection therewith through
the public strats of the City of Vernon was read for third and
final rea.ding.
It was moved by Du~bin and seconded by Levy that
Ordinance No. 393 be adopted. Motion ca.rried by the following
vote:

Demands on the General Fund in the sum of Four Thousand
Eight Hundred llifteen Dollars and Thirty...seven Cents were read.

sum of Twenty-four and 62/100 Dollars ($24.62) were read..
It wa.s moved by Leonis and secwnded by Durbin that the
demands be allowed. and wa.rrants drawn on the Treasurer for the
amounts. Motion carried.
