MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEET ING OF TEE BOARD OF
TRUSTEES OF THE CITY OF VERNON HELD ON THE 20th
DAY OF JUNE, 1927, AT THE CITY HALL OF THE CITY OF
VERNON, 4305 SAlfTA FE AVENUE, VERNON, CALIFORNIA.
The meeting was called to order hy the President.

The Trustees present \vere:: Leonis, Durbin, Levy and
Furlong.
The Trustee absent was: Kniffin, who is still ill.
The minutes of the meetings of May 2, 16 and June 6,
1927, were read..
It was moved by Durbin and seconded by Levy that the
minutes of May 2. Ma.;W 16 and June 6, be appr oved as read.
Motion carried..
At this time the City Clerk advised the Board that this
wa.s the time and place fixed pursuant to Statute and notice
given for the hearing in the matter of the assessment for the
improvement of Alameda Street, as c~ntemplated by Resolution
of Intention No. 474, adopted on the 6th day of December, 1926.
The Clerk &lso informed the Board that affidavit of the
posting of the Notice of Filing Assessment was on file in his
office and that nO written appeals or objections had been
filed in his office pr ior to the da.y set f or the hearing, or
otherwise.
The President of the Board then asked if there were a.ny
interested persons pre.sent desiring to be heard in the matter,
and no one responded. All interested persons having been
given full opportunity to show cause why the said assessment
should not be confirmed, all objections presented having
been heard and fully considered, andthe Board baving been
sf,J,tisfied with the correctness of the assessment.
Thereupon Trustee Durbin moved that the assessment be
confirmed and approved, which mot ion, seconded by Trustee
Levy, was carried by the following vote::

Leonis, Durbin, Le.vy and Furlong
None.
Kniffin.
At this time the City Engineer requested more time to
make an investigation in reference to the prote.sta being filed
against the impro.vement contemplated under Ordinance No. 401.
It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Levy that the
reque.st of the City Engineer for an extension of time be granted.
Moti on carried.
RESOLUTION No; 490: Ai. resolution requesting a permit from the
State Board of Health for sewer disposal was read.
It was moved by Levy and seconded by Durbin that the same
be a.dopted. Motion carried.

At this time the City Clerk stated that he had on his
desk a map of Tract No. 9937, and requested that the same be
approved.
It was moved by Leonis and secxmded by Durbin that the
same be referred to the City Engineer for investigation and
report. Motion carried.
A communication from the Vernon Lumber Company regarding
a pedestrian saSety zone to be established at 1935 East Vernon
Avenue was r-ead.
It was moved by Lennie and seconded by Durbin that the
Same be referred to the Police Department for investigation
and report. Motion carried.
An application by the Ca.lifornia Hair Company to conduct
bust ne ss a.t 230.4 East 48th Street was read.
It was mov'lad by Durbin and sec onded by Levy that the same
be filed. Motion carried.
An application for a permit by George D. Wells to conduct
a service office and emergency hospital at 4317 Downey Road,
WaS read.

It was moved by La onis and seconded by Durbin that the same
be filed and referred to the City Attorney. Motion carried.
An application by George D. \Vells for a permit to opera.te
a r'etail drug store at 4317 Downey Road was read.
It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Durbin that the
application be filed and the matter referred to the City
Attorney for investigation and report. Motion carried.
An application by C. F. Correll for a permit to operate
a newspaper and maga.zine baling at 270Z S. Alameda street was
read..
It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Durbin that the
application be filed and the permit grante.d, subject to the
approval. of George Eastman, the owner of the pr operty, said
approval to be in writ ing.. Mot ion carried.
A communieati on from the \1'hi te Company requesting that
a permit be issued to A. D.. Siroonianto haul rubbish from
their pla.ce of bus mess located at 3851 Santa Fe Avenue was
read...
It Was moved by Durbin and seconded by Levy that the
application be filed and the permit grante.d. Motion earned.
A communication from the ilVest Coast Glass Company request-
ing tha.t a permit be issued to the Hunt ington Park and Los
Angeles Transfer Company to haul rubbish from their pant
located at 3235 E. Slauson Avenue, to the dump located outside
of the City of Vernon was read.
It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Durbin that the
application be filed and permit granted. Motion carried.

An application for permit by W. H. MeC-lain to hau:I.
garba.g$ a.nd rubbish from the Vernon Country Club, the Vernon
Fountain Lunch, the J. T. Finley Restaurant, and the York Ice
Machinery Company, the same to be disposed of outside of the
eity" limi ts.
It was moved by Leonis and sec onded by Durbin that the
application be filed and permit granted. }lotion carried.
An application for a permit by the Pacific Rea.cJ.Y Cut Oom-
pany to haul trash from their various jobs into and through
the City of Vernon was read.
It was moved by Leonie and seconded by Durbin that owing
to the indefiniteness of the a.pplication, in that it oould not
be thoroughly understood therefrom as to where the rubbisb Was to be
hauled from and to, and that the matter be referred to the Police Depart-
ment for inveeti~t ion and report. Motion earried.
A. communiaation from T. J.Doyle requesting a permit be
issued to S. T. Curtis for the hauling of garbage and rubbish
from their cafe and bar was read.
It was moved by Durbi n and seconded by La onis tba.,t the
application be filed and the permit granted. Motion carried.
It was moved by Levy and seconded by Durbin that the City
Clerk be instructed to insure the cover of the reservoir with
.TohnG. Johnson Company, at the rate of One Dollar a.nd Sixty-
two Cents ($1.62) for a period of three (.3.) years. llotion
carried.
At this time the City Attorney reported that in his
opinion it was illegal to conduct slot machines in the City
of Vernon.
It was moved by Levy and seconded by Durbin that the
report of the City Attorney be filed.. Motion carried.
At this time Trustee Leonis reported to the Board that
he had visited the Board of SuperVisors and had taken up with
them the question of receiv ing some help from the County in
the building of the bridge in the City of Vernon on Soto Stree't,
and reported that the Board of Supervisors had agreed to pay
fifty per cent (50%) of the cost of the bridge, not to exceed
one-half Of One Hundred Sixty-five Thousa.nd Dollars ($165,000.00),
prOVided, however, that the City of Vernon would widen Soto
Stree.t from its northerly boundary line to the southerly boundary
line of said city to a uniform width of eighty feet.
It was moved by Levy and seconded by Durbin that the
report of Trustee Leonis be filed, and that the City Attorney
and the City Engineer be instructed to proceed a.t once with
the widening of.Soto Street to a uniform width of eighty feet
from the north to the south boundary line of the City of Vernon.
Motion c.arried.

APPLICATION No. 1208: By U. S. Radiator Company for a build-
ing permit for the construction of loa.ding platfor.m, a.t 2120
East 25th Street, approximate cost $950.00.
APPLICATION lITo. 1209: By Brombaeller Iron Works for a building
permit for the construction of Water Heater Plant to be located
on Lot 48, 500 Acre Tract, approximate cost $16,000.00.
APPLICATION No. 1210: By Pan-Pacific Oil Company, for a build...
ing permit for the construction of a. gasoline canning shed, to
be located on Lots 17, 18, 19, 20, Block J, Day star Tract,
approximate cost $3500.00.
APPLICATION No. 1211: :By Southern California Telephone Company
for a permit to place three thirty foot poles on eaetside
and west wide. of Downey Road, south of 26th Street, to serve
Harvey Bros. Contractors.
APPLICATION No. l:u2: By Kolar &: Myers Pottery for the install-
ation of 280 gallon gasoline tank on their premises located
~t 2318 East 52nd Street.
APPLICATION No. 1213: By Southern California Gas Company for
permit to install gas main on Magnolia Avenue, south of Fruit-
land Avenue.
APPLICATION No. 1214: By J. S. A. Smith for sewer connection
at 2228 East 37th Street.
APPLICATION No. 1215: By Growers Cold Storage Company for
sewer connection at 5050 S. Alameda Street.
It wa.s moved by Leonis and seconded by Levy that the
applica.tions be filed and permits granted. Motion carried.
The sta.tement of the Water Department was read.
It was moved by Levy and seconded by Durbin that the
statement of the "'later Department be filed.. Motion carried.
The report of the Police Department on the genera.l con-
di tions of the city was read.
It wa.s moved by Leonis and seconded by Durbin that the
repo.rt be filed. Motion carried.
Demands on the General Fund in the sum of Eleven Thousand
Two Hundred Fifty-two and 70/100 Dollars ($11,252.70) were
read. .
Demands on the Water System No. 2 in the sum of One Hundred
Fift.een and 52/100 Dollars ($115.52).
