The minutes of the meeting of April 17th,. were rea.d.
It wa.s moved by Leonis and seconded by Durbin tha.t the
minutes be approved a.s read. Motion carried.
At this time the City Clerk presented a. petition for
annexation of cextain territory to the City of Vernon.
It was moved by Leonis and seconded. by Durbin that the
petition. be referred to the eity ClerIc for checking and report.
Motion carried.
Applica.tion of M. W. Walker for a pe.rmit and license to
ma.nuf'acture bax.e.s and cra.tes a.t 23.04 East 48th street, sa.id pla.ce
being formerly used far the same manufaJ,tturing purpose, wa.s read.

applicat ion be filed and the permit. granted. Mot ian carried.
A communication from the Southern Pacific Company re-
garding the installation of track seales on Alameda street, was
read...
It was moved by Leoni.s and seconded by Durbin that the
matter be referred to the City Engineer for checking and report
at the next meeting. Motion~ carried.
A comm:unicat ion from the Board of Public Works of the
City of Los Angeles,. regarding a report o.f the City Engineer of
the City of Los Angeles to the Board of Public Vlorks o.f said city,
wherein the Engineer reported that they ha.d found considerable oil
flov:r in the sewerage passing through the City of Vernon. and ra-
~uesting the Boa.rd to not if :v the oil refineries to take ste.ps
necessary to prevent oil discharge into the sewers, '.'las read.
It wa.s moved by Leonis and seeonded by Durbin that the
City Attorney of the C"ity of Vernon be instructed to cOlTlllluuicate
with all the oil refineries in the aity of Vernon. requesting them
to immedia.tely comply with the request of the Board of Public
~lforks of the City of Los Angeles. and send a copy of the notice
sent to the oil. compa.nies,to. the Boa.rd of Public Works. Motion
ca.rried.
A communicat ion from the Los Angeles Art Glass C,ompany
requesting a. permit for the ha.uling of broken gla.ss ;::;.nd rubbish. to
the Los Angeles City Dump through the streets of the City of Vernon".

It was moved by Durbin and seconded by Leonis that the

City Clerk be instructed to notify the Los Angeles Art Glass Com-
pany that there is no city d'UID..p in the City of Vernon" hence there
would be no. o.ccasion for the permit. Motion carried.

Ioca.ted a.t Vernon. and Boyle Avenues,. a.long and upon the streets of

It was moved by Dur~bin and seconded by Leonis that the
communicat ion be filed and the permit gran.ted.- Mot ion carried.
A communication from the Lewis Motor Ca.r Company for
permis.sion to haul refuse and rubbish from their premises at 261~9
Santa Fe Avenue to the Los Angeles By-Product Company-,.was read.
It was moved by Durbin and seconded by Leonis that the
communioa.tion be filed and the permit granted. Motion carried.
A c ommunica.t ion from the Yaffe Tire Shoe Company,. for a
permit and lioense to purchase scrap metal. iron. rags and waste
materials at 2555 Chambers Strilet,. was read.
It was moved. by Durbin and seconded by Leonis that the

A communication from Burt C. Nelson regarding stenciling
a:r house numbers on curbs. was read.

ing parking their trucks on East Vernon Avenue,. was read.
It was moved bv Leonis and seconded by Durbin that the
matter be referred to th~ City Clerk for adjustment and report.

It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Durbin that the
same be referred to the Police Departmen-[ for report. Me-tion
carried.
It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Durbin that
Courrcilma.n. Durbin be appointed a committee of one to cheek up. all
packing plants within the city and to report on those who have up-
t.o-date rendering plants. Motion carried.
It was moved by Leonis and seeonded by Durbin that the
City Attorney a.ppea.r before the Railroad Commission in the hearing
of the sepa.:rat ion of grade matter af Butte street.. Mot ion carried.
It was moved by Leonis and seconded h'lJ Durbin that the
City Att.orney attend the meeting of the Vernon Industrial Develop-
ment Associat ion to be held at Central Mamlfac-turing District on
~iday, May 11th, at twelve o'clock noon, and be in a po.sition to
report what aetion ha.:s been taken on the completion of the sewer
bridge on Soto Street. Motion earried.

At this time the PoTice Chief reported to the C-ouncil
tha.t Nfl'. Fl.oyd. Conroy had been appointed a.s a. motorcyc-le officer in
lieu of rvtr. .Tack LaRue who has left the depa.rtment. at a. salary of
$1.75.00 per month. and requested the approva.l of the Council on
the appointment.
It wa.s moved by Leonis and seconded by Durbin that the
Council a.pprove the a:ppointment of :Mr. Floyd Cronr:oy. Motion
carried.
The repiort of the Police Department on the general
condition of the city. was read.
It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Durbin that the
