THE 21st DAY OF MAY, 1928, AT THE CITY RALL OF THE CITY OF VERNON, 4309 SANTA FE AVENUE, VERNON, CALI FORNIA ~ ---.- - - - .. - .. - - The meeting was called to order by the Mayor, J. J. Furlong. The Councilmen presen t were: .Durbin, LeiTY and Furlong. The Councilmen absent were: Leoni s and Kniffin. '!'he minutes of the meeting of May 7th were read~ It was moved by Durbin and seconded by Levy that the rrimutes be approved as read. Motion carried. A communication from the Marine Refining Co. requesting a permit to haul refuse to the L. A.. By Prodmts Co. at 25th and River - Atlas Mixed Mortar Company, 2901 Santa Fe Avenue and the Consumers Rock and Gravel Company at 30th and Al~eda Streets, was read. It was moved by Levy, secondedbJ' Durbin, that the communication';~be filed and a p ermi t granted. Motion carried. A cOIImlunication from the County Surveyor regarding a drainage improvement dis trict which includes a portion of the City of Vernon was read. It was moved by Durbin and seconded by Levy that the report be referred to the City Engineer for crecking ani report. Motion carried. Proposal and specification by the Western Neon Sign Company for the construction of an electric sign from the Ci ty Hall for the Ci ty of Vernon was read by the Cle rk. It was moved by Levy and seconded by Durbin that the communication be filed. Motion carried. A communication from Councilman Levy requesting a four months' leave of absence from the city owing to the fact that he is going to Europe, was read. It was moved by Durbin seconded by Furlong that the request of Councilman Levy be granted. Motion carried. Communica.tion f rom the American Brake Shoe Co. regarding the change of Topeka Avenue to 55th Street. It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that the City Att orney p:" epare the necessary resolutior to have the name of Center street changed to 57th Street and the -1- 70 mame of Topeka Street changed to 55th Street. :Motion carried. Communca tion from S. V. Gregovich et a.1, f or a permi t to operate a resta.urant at the Northeast corner of 57th and Santa Fe Avenue was read. It was moved by Levy, seconded by Durbin, that the application be referred to the Police Department for investi- gation and report. :Motion carried.j Communication from the Chamber of Commerce, Ci'tir of Los Angeles, regarding the American Public Health Association was read. It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy thl. t same be filed. Kotion carried.; A communication from Watkins Company, 47thand Pacific Blvd. requewting a permit to haul rubbish from the ~r plant, was read. It was mov ed by Levy, seconded by Durbin, that the c ommunic a tion be filed and a permit granted. :Motion carried. A communication from H. K. Christensen reque sting a license and permit to operate a plumbing supply business at 2111 East 51st Street, was read. It was moved by Levy, seconded by Durbin, that the communication be filed and a p ermi t granted. Motion carried. Report of the Poli.ce Department on the application of Mrs. Margaret Carico - an application to operate a luncn stand at 4301 Do~ey Avenue was read, wherein the Police Department recommended that the application be denied. It was moved by Levy and s ec onded . by Durbin tha t the report be filed and the recommenaation concurred in. Kotion carried.; The report of the Police Department on the general condition of the city, was read. It was moved by Durbin and seconded by Levy tl:at same be filed. Kotion carried.
