19280618 Regular City Council Meeting - Minutes MINUTES OF A REGULA..T-1 :MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERNON HELD ON THE 18TH DAY OF JUNE, 1928, AT THE CITY HALL OF THE CITY OF VERNON, 4305 SANTA FE AVENUE, VERNON, CALIFORNIA. - - - - - ~ - - - - - - - - - - - ~ - - The meeting was called to order by the Mayor, J. J. Furlong. The Councilmen present YV er e : Furlong, Le Ollis and Durbin. The Councilmen absent were: Kniffin and Levy. The minutes of the meetings of June 4 th and 5th were read. It was moved by Durbin and seconded by Leonie that the minutes be approved as read. Motion carried. At thi s time the Ci ty Engineer presented for the approval of the Council the assesament diagram prepared by himself for the improvement of Bandini Boulevard, as con- templated in Resolution of Intention No. 506. Councilman Durbin moved that said diagram be approved, seconded by Councilman Leonis and carried. At this time the City Clerk advised the Council that this was the time and place fixed pursuant to statute and notice given for the hearing in the matter of tre assess- ment for the improvement of Bandini Boulevard as contemplated by Resolution of Intention No. 506 , adopted on the Third day of January, 1928. The Clerk also informed the Council that affidavits of the posting and publishing of the notice of filing assessments, were on file in his offioe and tm t no \~itten appeal or objection had been filed in his offioe to the date set for hearing. M~or Furlong then asked if t~ere were any interested persons present desiring to be heard in the matter. All interested persons having been gi.ven full opportunity to show cause why the said ass$Ssment should not be oonfirmed. All objeotions presented having been heard and fully oonsidered and the Counoil being satisfied with the oorreotness of the assessment, thereupon Councilman Durbin moved that said assessment be oonfirmed and approved, which motion was duly s eoonded by Counoilman Leonie and carr ied by the following vote, to wit: nAy-es" Durbin, Leonis and Furlong, tJNoes"none Absent Kniffin and Levy. APPLICATION by the Peerless Paoking Company for a slaughter house p~it at 3290 East Vernon Avenue, was read. Moved by Durbin, seconded by Leonis, that the applioation be filed and a permit granted. Motion carried. -1- A communicat ion from Buttress and McClellen suggesting the change of Topeka street to 55th Street. was read. Thereupon, Councilman Durbin introduced RESOLUTION NO. 517: A resolution changing the name of Center street to 57 th Street, in the City of Vernon, and moved the adoption of the resolution, which was seconded by Councilman Leonis and carried. Councilman Durbin then introduced RESOLUTION NO. 518: A resolution changing the name of Topeka Street to 55th street, City of Vernon, and moved the adoption of the resolution, which was seconded by Councilman Leonis and carried. Resolution submitted by the Board of Supervisors RESOLUTION NO. 519: A resolution regarding drainage improvement district near Bandini territory. was read. It was moved by Durbi~ seconded by Leonie that Resolution No. 519 be adopted. Motion carried. Q,ui t claim deed was then presented by the Ci ty Clerk from the Technical Glass Company. Councilman Leonis introduced RESOLUTION NO. 520: A resolution accepting said Deed ani in- structing City Clerk to record same, and moved its adoption, which was seconded by Councilman Durbin and carried. A cormnunication from the Board of Public Works in answer to letter sent by City Attomey of the Ci ty of Vernon, regarding oil flowing into sani tary sewers, was read. It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin, that same be filed. Motion carried. A communication from the Southern Cal.ifomia Telephone Compan;,y requesting a parmi t for the hauling of tree trimmings through the City of Vernon. to be disposed of on a dumping ground outside of the City of Vernon in County Ter- ritory, was read. It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin, that the communication be filed and a permi t granted. Motion carried., A communication from H. W. McClain for a permi t to haul garbage and refuse out of th e Oi ty of Vernon, was read. It was moved by Leoni sand s ec onded by Durbin that same be referred to the Police Department for investi- gation and report. Motion carried. A communication from F. H. Grant, advising of the closing of his business at 2312t East 37th Street, was read. It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Durbin that same be filed. Motion carfied. A communication from August Del Teimpo requesting a change of license from a Boarding and Rooming house license to a Rooming House alone - the Rooming House to be operated at 4416 St. Charles Street of said cit7, was read. -2- It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin that the request be granted. Motion carried. It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Durbin that the City Engineer be instructed to advertise fer: bids for the construction of the bridge on Soto Street. Durbin for permit to install gasoline storage tank at 3045 East Vernon Avenue. App roximat e cos t '35.00. APPLICATION 1523: By Electric Steel and Mfg. Company far building p ermi t for the construc tion of addition to crane runway at 3334 East Slauson Avenue. Approximate cost t500.00 APPLICATION NO. 1524: By L. G. Bradfield Company for buiJd i.ng permi t for the construction of an addi tion to factory a t 48th and Everett Street. Ap~oximate cost ~2750.00. AFPLICATI ON liO. 1525: By California Neon Light Company fer: permit to construct advertising sign for the Safeway Stores Warehouse at Vernon and Alameda Street. Approximate cost 110,000.00. A;P.PLICATION NO. 1526: By Long Tumey Company for buildi~ per- mit for re-modeling of factory at 1920 East Vernon Avenue. Approxima.te cost $300.00. APPLICATION NO. 1527: By A. M. Castle Company for permi t to instal 550 gallon gasoline tank at 2200 East Topeka Street. Approximate cost 1300.00. APPLICATION NO. 1528: By H. D. Cowan for bUilding penni t for the construction of paint shop at 2335 East 27th Street. Approximate cost $1000.00. A,PPLICATION NO. 1529: By El ectric Steel and Mfg. Company for building pannit for construction of factory for housing one generator at 3334 East Slauson Avenue. Approximate cost ~lOO.OO. APPLICATION NO. 1530: By So. California Gas Company for gas service to Kennedy Name Plate Company, East Vernon Avenue and Santa Fe Railway Tracks. APPLICATION NO. 1531: By So. Calif. Gas Company for permit to repair service'195 ft. East of Magnolia Avenue on south side of Frui tland Road. It was moved by Leonis, aIXl seconded by Durbin that the appli~tions be filed and permits granted. Motion carried. Report of the Police Department on the application of S. V. Gregovich for ~rmit to operate a lunCh wagon at 57th and Santa Fe Avenue, was read. It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Leonis tlE. t the permit be denied. Demands on the General Fund in the sun of $;7607.38 'Were read. It wa.s moved by Leoni s and seconded by Durbin that the demands be allowed and warrants drawn f cr the same, as set up in the memorandum. AFPLICATION NO. 1399: By Engineering Department of the City of Los Ang-;les-for building permi t for the construction of an asphalt plant. Approximate C02t $30,000.00.
