MINUTES OF A REGULAR lJillETING OF THE
CITY COUNCIL OF 'I'FIE CITY OF VERNON,

The meeting was called to order by the Mayor,
J. J. Furlong.
Councilmen present: Durbin, Furlong, Leonis, Levy
Councilmen absent: Kniffin
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin, that
the reading of the Minutes of the previous meeting be dis-
pensed with. Motion carried.
At this time the City Clerk announced that this
was the time and place for the opening of bids for the im-
provement of Soto Street.
Moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin, that the
City Clerk open and read the bids submitted to him.
At this time the City Clerk opened and declared
the bids from the Griffith Company; the Los Angeles Paving
Company; George R. Curtis Paving Company; George D. Osweld;
Osburn Company.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Durbin, that
the bids be referred to the City Engine er for' checking
and rep.ort. Mot ion carried.
The City Clerk announced that this was the time
and place for the opening of bids for the sale of bonds on
Magnolia and Slauson Avenue opening and widening; that he
had complied with the law in reference to the advertising
thereof, and tha.t he ha.d to date received no bids.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin, that
the matter of the sale of bonds be referred to the City
Attorney. Motion carried.
Communication from Gruss Air Spring Company of
America. for a>license to operate a plant for the manufactur-
ing of shock absorbers at 45:56 District Blvd., was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that
the communication be filed and license issued. Motion
ca.rried.
Communication from C. A. Look Company for permit
and license to operate at 2054 East 48th Street. wa.s read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin, that
be communicat ion be filed and permit granted. Mot ion
carried.
Communication from l~rvin Wilson for permit and
license to operate a serv ice station and repair shop at 4301
Downey Road, was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin, that
the communication be filed and permit granted. Motion
carried.

Communication from Stock Yards Market Company
for permit and license to operate a general employment
bureau at 4549 Produce Plaza in the Central Manufacturing
District, was read.

It was moved by Levy, seconded by Durbin, that
the matter be referred to the Police Department for in-
vestigation and report. Motion carried.
Communication from Berkelev Flour Mills, Inc.,
for permit and license to operate a bakery supply busi-
ness at 4255 Produce Plaza, in the Central Manufacturing
District. was read.
It was moved by Leonis. seconded by Levy, that
the communicat ion be filed and permit granted. Mot ion
carried.
Communicat ion from Vernon W'a.t er Department re-
questing a ruling in connection \'J'ith a req.uest of the
Safeway Stores, Inc., to have one master connection in-
stead of three separate meters, in order to get a lower
'bracket rate on water cons'UIllption, was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that
the ruling of this Council be that the rate for 'i:va.ter
will be cha.rged by the meter, and each mater will be read
separately and a bill sent for each meter reading. Mot ion
carried.
Communicat ion from B. W. Kuhn Company, lnc..
requesting permit for the haulihg of refuse from premises
of 2900 Sa.nta Fe Avenue to the Blue Diamond dump, was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Dtn'bin, that
the communication be filed and the permit gra.nted. Motion
ca.rried.
Communication from Gruss Air Spring Company of
America for permit to haul refuse from premises at 4536
D~strict Boulevard to an authorized incinerator, was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that
the communicat ion be filed and the permit granted. Motion
carried.
Communication from Grant Oil Tool Company for
permit to haul refuse from premises at 2042 East Vernon
Avenue, was read.
It wa.s moved. by Durbin, seconded by Levy,
that the cammunication be filed and permit granted. Motion
carried.
Communication from Hoodman Plumbing Supply-yea.
for permit to haul refuse from premises of 2373 East 27th
Street to the city incinerator, was read.
Moved by Levy, seconded by Durbin, that the
communication be fdl:ted and permit granted. Motion carried.
Communication from Hoyt-Woad Manufacturing Co.
for permit to haul refuse from premises at 2146 East 25th
Street to t hec i ty dump, was read.
Moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy that the
communicat ion be filed and the permit granted.

to Bandini dump, was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that
the communication be filed and the permit granted. Mat ion

Communicat i an from Ell Paso Shoe st are, request ing
permission to hold ball games in the old Vernon ball park,
wa.s read. Admission would be charged and plans made to
build a grand stand.
It was moved by Durbin, see onded by Levy, that
the communication be filed. Motion garried.
Communicat ion from the Police Department re-
questing the approval of the Council to the appointment
of .T. .T . Hennessy in the place of Hay Costello, as night
patrolman, at a salary of $175.00 a month, was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Durbin, that
this Council approve the.appointment of :Mr. .T. .T. Hennessy
at the salary named. Motion carried.
Report of the Police Department on application
of O. A. Miller for cafe at 2011 East 38th Street, was
read. The Police Department recolnmended that this applica-
tion be denied due to the fact that there is no building
at this address. Owing to the fact that a permit was
issued to build a building, it Vla.S moved by Durbin, seconded
by Levy, that the application again be referred to the Police
Department. Motion carried.

be approved and warrants drawn for the same.
