MINUTES OF THE REGULAR liElETING OF
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
VERNON, BELD ON 'l'HE 4TH DAY OF
NOVEMBER, 1929, AT THE CITY HALL
OF THE CITY OF V'.JlRNON, 4305 SANTA

The meeting was called to order by the Mayor,
:r. :r. Furlong.
Councilmen present: Durbin, Furlong, Levy
Councilmen absent: Kniffin, Leonis
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that the
reading of the Minutes of the previous meeting be dispensed
with. Motion carried.
Communication from the Los Angeles Paving Company
regarding bids for the improvement of Soto Street was read.
Moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that same be
laid over to the adjourned regular meeting to be held
November 13, 1929, at ten o'clock A. M. Motion carried.
The City Engineer at this time requested more
time in which to make report on the bids received by the
City, as he stated that in his opinion there was a mistake
made in the specifications and plans and would like further
time, and that he would be able to report at the adjourned
regular meeting on November. 13th.
Moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that the City
Engineer be given additional time. Motion carried.
Ordinance No. 427, an Ordinance of intention for
the vacation of a certain alley in Block 24 of Huntington
Park Extension No.1, was read for first reading.
Moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that said
Ordinance No. 427 be passed for first reading. Motion
carried.
Coramunication from the Los Angeles County Re-
gional Planning Commission regarding changing of the name
of Pa.cific Bouleva.rd to Long Beach Boulevard, was read.
Moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that same
be laid over. Motion carried.
Communication from the Bank of America, Vernon
Branch, requesting permission to paint the curb in front
of the banking room at 27th and Santa Fe Avenue for
customers' loading ~one, was read.
~ved by Levy, seconded by Durbin, that the same
be referred to the Police Commission. Motion carried.
Communication from George E. lJIartin, requesting
permission to erect a ten foot wire fence of 16 gauge wire,
for use in marketing turkeys for a period of ten days, ...vas
read.
Moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that permis-
sion be granted. Motion carried.

sion to haul rubbish from their places of business:
Standard Pipe & Supply Company
Union .Packing Company
Sunland Biscuit Company
Moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that the com-
munications be filed and the permits granted. Motion
carried.
Communication from Louis ~'eixeira for permit to
haul cauliflower leaves from the city of Vernon to Norwalk,
was read.
Moved by Levy, seconded by Durbin, that the com-
munication be filed and the permit granted. Motion carried.
Communication from L. F. Griffith for permit to
haul garbage from the Shamrock Cafe, 5819 Santa Fe Avenue,
and the C. M. D. Cafeteria, 4813 Loma Vista Avenue, to his
hog ranch in E1 Monte, was read.
Moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that the com-
munication be filed and the applica.nt instructed to ha.ve
the owners of the respective properties make the applica-
t ion for the permit.. Mot ion carried.

B;eport of the Wa.ter Department for the month of
October was read.
Moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that the same
be filed. Motion carried.
Re.port of the Police Department on 'general con-
ditions of the city was read.
Moved by Levy, seconded by Durbin, that the same
be filed. Motion carried.

vommunicat ion fromJ"ulio Pere~ for a permit to
hold a motorcycle exhibition by the Mexi.co City :Motorcycle
officers, in Maier ball park, Uovember 10, 1929, was read.
At this time Mr. ]?ere~ addressed the Council and
stated that there would be no admission charged.
~ved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that the com-
munication be filed and the permit be granted for the one
day, to-wit. November la, 1929. Motion ca.rried.
The following applications, all having the approval
of the City Engineer, were read:
Application 2122: of Finkelstein Foundry Company for build-
ing permit for the construction of bins at 2323 East 27th St.
Approximate cost ilOO.OO.
.Application 2123: of Marion Wilson for permit to install one
550fallon gasoline tank at 4301 Downey Road.
Appli.cation 2124: of Los Angeles Paving Company for build-

ing permit for the construction of roof on fence for shed
to store supplies at 3200 East Vernon Ave. Approximate
cost $300.00.
Application 2125: Universal Engineering Company for build-
ing permit for alteration of doors a.nd windows at 2369 East
51st street.. Approximate cost $300.00.
Application 21215: of Wm. P. Neil Company for building permit
for alterations at Stock Yards Market Company, 4559 Produce
Plaza.. Approximate cost $160.00.
.A.'P-plication 2J..27: of Los Angeles Gas & Electric Corporat ion
for excavation permit to install one 12 inch Venturi meter
at Slauson and Alameda Street.
Applica.tion 2128: of Technical Glass Company for sewer connec-
tion at 2050 East 48th Street.
A1;>p1i.cat ion 2J..29: of Crescent Refining Company for building
permit for the construction of corrugated iron building over
boilers at 2460 East 28th Street. Approximate cost $1300.00.

were read, said total consisting of the following items:
