The meeting was called to order by the Mayor,
.T. .T. Furlong.
Councilmen present: Durbin, Leonie, Furlong, Levy
Councilmen absent: Kniffin
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that the
reading of the Minutes of the previous meeting be dispensed
with. Motion carried.
ORDINANCE NO. 427, an Ordinance of Intention for
the vacation of a certain alley in Block 24 of Huntington
Park Extension No.1, was read for second reading.
Moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that eaid
Ordinance No. 427 be passed for second reading. Mo,tion
carried.
ORDINANCE NO. 427, an Ordinance of Intention for

Communication from the Central llanuf'acturing District
Sign Service requesting permit to place a temporary 30 foot
canvas sign aeross Exchange Avenue, advertising the stock
show to be held November 30 to December 7. 1929, was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that the
communication be filed and the permit granted. Motion carried.
Ca.mmunication from Anna Willette, requesting per-
mission to haul garbage from restaurant located at 5819
Santa Fe Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that the
communication be filed and the permit granted. Motion carried.
Communication from California Metal Enameling Co.,
requesting permission to haul refuse from premises at 2151
East 51st Street, was read.
Moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that the commu-
nication be filed and the permit granted. Motion carried.
Communication from the Beaver Oil Company, request-
ing permit to haul refuse from premises at 2316 East 52nd
Street, was read.
Moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that the commu-
nication be filed and the permit granted. Motion carried.
Communication from the Beaver Oil Company, request-
ing permit to operate and store two gasoline trucks at 2316
East 52nd street, was read.

:Moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy that, owing
to the fact that the communication does not disclose the
information as to whether the gasoline ta.nk is to be full
or empty. the matter should be laid over. Motion carried.
Communica.tion from Kline Clothing Company, re-
questing permit to distribute literature in the city of
Vernon, was read.

The following applications, all having the ap-
proval of the City Engineer, were read:
Appl icat ion 2137: of Frank Gaut ier for build ing permit for
the construction of warehouse at 2800 Alameda street. Ap-
proximate cost $5200.00.
Ap~lication~~138: of Los Angeles Union Stock Yards for
bUllding permit for the construction of receiving stand
in Los Angeles Union Stock Yards for cattle exhibit. Ap-
proximate cost $1000.00.
Application 2139: of Harmon Packing Company requesting
permit for fence at 3505 East Vernon Avenue. Approximate
cost $800.0.0.
415plicat ion 214.0: by Southern Califo.rnia Telephone Company
to place approximately 12 feet of one inch iron pipe on the
south side of Vernon Avenue, west of Santa Fe Avenue, for
telephone serv ice to school.
Application 2141: Luer Packing Company for building permit
for the erection of a boiler (66t1x16t) at 3026 East Vernon
Avenue. Approximate cost $4800.00.
Application 2142,: of Richfield Oil Company for permit to
excava.te in Boyle Avenue to place flange on pi1>e in three
places between Leonis Boulevard and Handolph Street.
Application 2143: of Richfield Oil Company for permit to
cut curb for driveway on East 2.7th Street, 50 feet ea.st of
Santa Fe railroad right of wa:y.
Application 2144: of Los Angeles Union Stock Yards for
permit to erect tent in Los Angeles Union Stock Yards for
ffilristmas Live Stock Show.
Application 2145: for permission to break curb for a drive-
way at 22.08 Ea.st 37th Street.
Application 2146: forsevler- connection at 2227 East ~8th St.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Leonis, that
the applications be filed and the permits granted.
At this time the City Attorney informed the
Council that there was an action filed aga.inst the City of
Vernon by the City of Los Angeles as to the construction or
interpretation of the sewer ordinance of said city, and re-
quested the Council to empiboy to assist him the law firm of
Gibson, Dunn & crutcher, as they have previously handled
this matter with the city.

At this time Councilman Durbin introduced Resolu-
No. 575, a Resolution employing the law firm of Gibson, Dunn
& Crutcher to assist in the litigation wherein the City of
Los Angeles is plaintiff and the City of Vernon, &. municipal.
corporation, is defendant, being case No. 290951, and moved
its a.doption, which was seconded by Councilman Levy, and
carried.
At this time Councilman Durbin introduced Ordinance
No. 428, an Ordinance of the City Council of the city of
Vernon, declaring that public interest and neceslility require
that the city take and condemn a certain portion of Traet 4,
as per map recorded in Book 52, at page 82 of Mi.scellaneous
records, Los Angeles County, described as beginning at the
intersection of the westerly line of Tract No. 4 with the
southerly line of East 26th Street; thence along the southerly
line of East 26.th Street ea.sterly 35 feet; thence southerly
parallel with sa.id westerly line of Tra.et No. 4 forth feet;
thence westerly parallel with the southerly line of East 26,th
Street 55 feet to the westerly line of said Tract No. 4;
thence along the westerly line thereof northerly 40 f'eet to
the point of beginning, for public storm drain purposes, and
moved that same be pa.ssed for first reading, which was
seconded by eouncilman Levy, a.nd carr'ied.
Re.port of the Police Department on the general con-
ditions of the city, was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Leonis, that
the report be filed. Motion carried.
