The: meeting wa.s ca.lled to order by the Mayor,
;r.s. Furlong.
Councilmen present: Durbin, Leonis, Kniffim, Furlong
Counei lmen absent: Levy
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Leonis, that
the reading of the Minutes of the previous meeting be dis-
pensed. with. Motion ca.rried.
At this time the City Clerk announced. that this
was the time and place set in the Notice Inviting Sealed.
Pro-posaJ..s for the improvement of Soto Street as set forth in
Resolution of Intention No. 574. for the opening of bids.
It was mov eo.. by Durbin, seconded. 'by Kniffin, that
the City Clerk proceed to o-pen and de:ela.re the 'bids. Motion
earried.
At this time the City Clerk publiely opened. and.
read the bids from the following firms: George R. Oswalt
Company; George R. Burtis Company; Griffith Company; and
L. A.Pa.ving Company.
The City Engineex at this time informed the 60lmcil
that the lowest and best 'bid wa.s the 'bid of the L. A. Pa~ing
Company.
At this time Councilman Durbin introduced Resolu-
tion Jio. 5.77, a Resolution of the City Council awardd.ng
the eont:raet for the work and. improvements described. in
Resolution of Intention No. 574, which was seconded ,by
Councilman Leonis and carried 'by the following vote:

Noes: None
Absent: Levy
At this t.ime the City Clerk announced that he ha.d.
on his desk bids pursuant to Notiee for the laying of the
water J..i.ne in Soto Street.
Moved by Durbin, seconded by Kniffin, that the
City Clerk proceed. to open the 'bids. Motion earr1ed.
At this time the City Clerk opened the bids from
the following firms: Thamas Haverty Company; Geo. M.
Mitchell; and Edgley Company.
Edgley Company bid, being the lowest and 'best bid,
on the ricommendation of the City Engineer it was moved by

except the bid of the Edgley C~mpany, and that they be
awarded the c ont rac:t . Mot ion aarried.
Franchise submitted by the Riohfield Oil. Co.
for pipe line system in the city of Vernon was submit.ted
by the City Clerk.
It Vias moved by Durbin, seconded by Knifrin,
that the w.atter be laid over until Friday, December 20,
1929, to be again taken U:P' -.t an adjourned regular meet-
ing to be held on said date. Motion carried.
Report of the Railroa.d. Commission on the mat-
ter af the Associated Meai Company and others va. Southern
California Gas Company, was read.
It was moved by Durbin. seconded by Kniffin,
tha.t the same be filed.. Motion carried.
Communication from ~adoQhi Bozigian for p~rmit
to operate. a. restaurant at 3001 Downey Road was read.
Moved by Durbin, seconded by Kniffin, that the
same be ref'erreu to the Police Department for investiga-
tion a.nd report. Motion carried.
Communication from B~oe & Hauptman for permit
and license to opera.te III lumber business at 2300 East
48th Street was rea.d.

that.the a.pplication be riled and permit granted. Motion

1..7, 1929, was read.

East 38th street, a.nd a.lso requesting that name be changed
to C. :r. Burna1ide from R. Smith, was read.

It was moved by Leonis, sec.onded by Durbin, that
the applications be filed and permits granted. Motion carried.
Report of the Police Department on general condi-
tions of the city was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin, that
the same be filed. Motion ca.rried.
Oommu.nicat ion from G. ~'a.rmsos for permit to opera.te
a cigar and soft drink stand at Leonis Boulevard and Downey
Road was read.
It was moved by Kniffin, seconded by Durbin, that
the communication be referred to the Police Department.

Communication from the W1lshire Oil Company re-
garding the fire hazard to which its plant is e.x.poseddue
to the Los Angeles incinerator on Ea.st 26th Street was
rea.d..
It.was moved by Kniffin, seconded by Durbin, that
the same be referred to the City Attorney, and tha.t the
City Attorney be instructed to not ify the' City of Los Angeles
that, owing to the fire hazard created by open fires in the
city of Vernon, the permit heretofore asked for by them is
refused, and to send a copy of the letter of the Wilshire Oil
Campany to the City of Los Angeles; a.lso, to explain to the
City of Los Angeles that there is an ordinance in the city of
Vernon against open fires. Motion carried.
. The report of the Fire Commission at this time was
presented to the Council, and the Commission requested that
the Fire Department of the city of Vernon be paid, as addi-
tional compensation, the stun of $500.00 out of the Fire De-
partment's funds, and that an additional $500.00 be advanced
to the \Vid ows' and Orphans' Fund and Firemen's Reli ef As so-
ciation of Los Angeles; that said $500~ 00 be advanced out of
the Music and Promotion Fund.
It was moved by Kniffin, seconded by Durbin, that
the report be filed and the two requests granted. Motion
ca.rried.
Demands on the General Fund in the sum of $9044.31,
consisting of the following items, were rea.d:

Moved by Leonis, seconded by Kniffin, that the
demands be allowed and the warrants drawn. Motion carried.
Koved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin, that this
meeting adjourn until three o'clock P. M., on the 20th day
of December, 1929. Motion carried.
