The meeting was called to order by the Mayor, J.J.Furlong.
Councilmen present: Leonis, Levy, Durbin, Furlong
Councilmen absent: Kniffin
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin, that' the reading of the
Minutes of the previous meeting be dispensed woth. Motion carried.
At this time the Coty Clerk presented the budget for 1930-31, totaling
$ 206,539.70, consisting of the following appropriationa:

It was moved by Levy, seconded by Durbin, that the
budget of the cityaa presented by the City Clerk for the
fisC'al year 1930-193l. be approved. Motion carried.
A.t this time Councilman Levy int roduced Reaolut ion
No. 592., a Resolution of Condolence, a copy of which to be
sent to the widow ot' :1. W~ Kniffin, and a copy to be spread
ttpon the Minutes of the meeting, which Resolution was seconded
by Councilman Durbin, and carried:

A RESOLtr.rION OF aONDOLENCE PASSED BY THE CITY COUNCIL
OF THE CITY OF VERNON ON ACCOUNT OF THE DEATH OF 3. w.
KNIFFIN FOmDmLY ONE OF THE 1~RS OF SAID COUNCIL.
WHEREAS, Providence has seen fit to terminate
the mortal career of our friend and colleague, :1. \f.
Kniffin, he having passed into the Great Beyond on
Wednesday, the eighteenth d~ of .Tune, nineteen hundred
and thirty, in the City of Vernon, California; and
\v.HEREAS, by this transition, the City of
Vernon has lost a va.luable and conscientious public
servant and c it izen whose sterling \vorth and genial
disposition endeared him to those who knew him beat;
and
WHEREAS. his official connection with the
City of Vernon, as a Counoilman, from April, 1914,
to the time of his demise, has left a.n ineffaceable
imprint upon the City Government; and
WHEREAS, ea.oh remaining member of the City
Council feels deeply the loss thus sustained;
TKfllREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:
Seotion 1. That this Resolution be adopted
by the City Council in regular session, and a oopy
there.of be spread upon the Minutes of this meeting,
and a copy of said Resol.ution be forwarded to the be-
reaved famil.y of :J. W. Kniffin.
Section 2. The City Clerk is hereby directed
to oert ify to the passage of this Resolution and oause
the same to be subscribed by all members of 'the City
Counc il, and thereupon the same shall be in full l' oree
and effect.

City of Vernon, and signed by the :Mayor of said
Citya.t an adjourned regular mee.ting thereof held

At this time Councilman Leonis introduced Resolu-
tion No. 593, a. Resolution appointing Mr. George E. :Martin
as a member of the City Council of the City of Vernon, to
ta.ke the place of J. \V. Kniffin, decea.sed, and moved its
adoption, which was seconded by Councilman Durbin, and
carried.
The following applications were read:
Application 2336: of Gunzo Izuhora., for permit to construat
dwelling at Magno.lia & Fruitland Road. App.rox. cost $300.00.
Applicat ion 2337: of Wilshire Oil Company to wreck old
building a.t 2-465 Ea.st 27th Street. Approxima.te aost $100.00.
Application 2338: of O. B. Bartlett for building permit to
make alterations in building located at 5511 South Boyle Ave.
to be ~sed for eXI(erimental research and laboratory work.
Approxlmate cost ,340.00.
Application 2339: of Safeway Stores, Inc., for permit to
move existing garage twenty feet east of present location.
Approximate cost $500.00.
Application 2340: of E. J. Stanton & Son for building per-
mit for the construction of warehouse at 38th a.nd Ross Sts.
Approximate cost $11,000.00.
A'Pplication 2341: of Pacific Coast Gl.a.ss Company for build-
ing permit for the conatruction of switch house to be located
a.t 3235 Ea.st Slauson Avenue. Approximate cost $300.0Q.
It It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin, that
the a.pplica.tions be approved subject to fina.l checking by the
Oi ty Engineer, and permit s granted. Motion carried.
At this time the City Clerk stated that flowers
had been purchased for the funeral of J. W. Kniffin, former
City Councilman.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin, that
the ac~ion of the City Clerk be a.pproved. Motion ca.rried.
There, being no further business to come before the
Council, it wa.s moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin, that the
meeting adjourn. Motion carried.
