MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE
CITY aOUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERNON,
HELD ON THE 7TH DJ:;l OF .JULY, 1930,
AT !:OO P. M.., AT THE CITY HALL OF
THE CITY OF VERNON, 4305- SAN'I'A FE
AVENUE, VERNON, CALIFORNIA.
The meeting was called to order by the Mayor,
J. J. Furlong.
Councilmen present: Leonis, Levy, Durbin, Furlong
Counci1ma.n absent: Martin
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin, that
t.he reading of the Minutes of the prev ious meeting be dis-
pensed with. Motion carried..
Report of' the Railroad Commission on the a.pplica.-
tion of' the Atchison, Topeka &: Santa Fe Railway, for spur
track franchise across East 26th Street was read.
It was moved by Durbin, sec~nded by Levy, that the
same be filed. Motion carried.
Communication from the Department of Building &:
Safety of the City of Los Angeles rega.rding signa.l devices
at 38t.h and Alameda Street s, was read.
Moved by Levy, seconded by Durbin, that ~e ssme
be re:ferred to the Committee of the Whole. Motion carried.
Communication from the Automobile Club of Southern
California., advising that they ha.ve taken over the agency
of the Wallace &: Tierman battery flasher, was read..
It wa.s moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin, tha.t
the communica.tion be filed. Motion carried.
Communication from the Los Angeles Manufaoturing
Company, requesting a. permit to use the old ball :park at 38th
and Santa Fe, for the ba.seball team of the Los Angeles Manu-
facturing Company, was read.
It was mowed by Levy, seoonded by Durbin, that the
communication be taken under advisement. Motion carried.
Communication :from the Axelson Aircra"ft Engine Co.
complainting of condition of Randolph Stree, due to recent
work therein, was rea.d.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Levy, that
the same be referred to the City Engineer. Mot ion carried.
Communication from C. J. Rambo &: Company, regard-
ing the audit of the cityts books, was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, tha.t the
same be filed. Motion carried.
CQmmunication from the City of Huntington Park, re-
ques.ting payment for hose destroyed by fire at the Superior
Paint &: Lacquer Works was read..
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Levy, that the
same be referred to the City Attorney viith instructions to
reply thereto. Mot ion earried.

Communication from T. A. Pennington. COIImlercial
Company for peEnit and license to operate lumber yard at
1.924 East Vernon Avenue, formerly occpied by the Draney
Lumber Compa.ny, wa.s read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Levy. that
the communication be filed and the permit granted. Motion
carried.
Communication from the Western Washer Company for
permit a.n~ license to operate a general manufacturing plant
at 2000 East Vernon Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Levy, tha..-t
the communication be filed and the permit granted. Motion
carried.
Communicate from Mrs. Ella. Greenwood for permit and
license to operate a nhot dog" stand at 2680 Soto Street,
wa.s read.
It wa.s moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that the
same be referred to the Police Department. Motion carried.
Communication from :Mrs. Anna stewart for permit and
license to operate a restaurant at 2040 East Vernon Avenue
was read.
It was moved by Durbin. seconded by Levy, that the
same be referred to the Police Department. Mot ion carried.
Communication from the San Gabriel Val~ey P:r:rotective
Associa.tion, regarding a. meeting to be held in Huntington Park
on .Tune 27. 1930, was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy. that, owing
to the lateness of receipt of the communication, same be filed.
Motion carried.
The foll.owing applications for peEnits to haul rubbish
upon and al.ong the City Streets were read:

It was moved by Levy. seconded by Durbin, that the
communicat ions be filed and permit s granted. Mot ion carried.
Communica.tion from Sears, Roebuck Company for permit
to haul refuse from its premises outside of the city of Vernon
through the city of Vernon to Ba.ndini. was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Durbin, that the
c ommunica.t ion be filed and the permi t denied, a.nd that the
City Attorney be instwcted to notify the writer of the com-
municat ion of the a.et i on of the Counc i 1. Mot ion ca.rried.
Franchise report by the Union Oil Company on Los
Angeles County FrancAise 596 N. S. was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that the
same be filed. Mot ion carried.

Communica.tion from J'. Artale, Fire Chief', sub-
mitting names of four additional firemen recommended by
the Fire Erommission to be attached to the Fire Department,
at a salary of $140.00 per month, was read, said names
being:
Lloyd Rarris
Ernest Sheets
Ben Kirk
Harold Woodworth, and
one vacation relief man,
Lawrence C. Newman.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that the
above mentioned men be employed by the City a.t the sa.lary
stated. Motion carried.
The following applications, all having the approval
of the City Engineer, were read:
Applica..tion 2342: of Foster & 1O.eiser Co., for building per-
mi t to ere.ct signboard on Lot s 5 a.nd 6, Block 41, Hunt ingt on
Park Extension No. 1. {Pa.cific Blvd. between 46th and Leonis
Blvd.} Cost approximately $100.00.
A~plication 2343: of Gelfand Manufacturing Co.) for permit
to construct two sala.d oil storage tanks at 4806 Everett St.
Approximate cost $475.00.
Ap-p:lication 2344: of 'Neaver Henry Company for building per-
mit to construct factory toilet ro oms at 3275 East Slauson
Avenue. Approximate cost $1200.00.
Ap'Plication 2345: of Mechanical Pattern & Foundry Co.. for
permi t to install 550 gallon tank and pump a.t 4545 Pac ifie
blvd. Approximate cost $120.00.
Applicat ion 2346: of Vim. P. Ne il Company for building permit

and Everett Street. Appnximate cost $52,000.00.
Applica.tion 2347: of American Refractories Company for build-
ing permit for the construction of factory on Lot 1 Martinez.

electric sign a.t 2381 East 27th Street. Approximate cost $350m
Application 234~: of~Vhite Truck & Transfer Co., for permit
to connec~ to sewer at 4950 Sa.nta Fe Avenue.
Application 2350: of' E. J'. Conway to connect to sewer a.i 2160
East 25th street.
Applica.tion 2351: of Southern California Gas Co. J for permit
to repair gas main on north side of Ea.st 26th Street 45 feet
east of Soto street.
Application 2352: of Warman Steel Casting Co., for building
permit for the construction of factory office at 6TOO South
Boyle Avenue. Approximate cost $2800.00.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, thai the
same be filed and permits granted. Motion ca.rried.

Commun.icat ion from General Motors Radio Corporat ion
requesting a. permit and license to operate a radio assembling
plant at 4405 Fruitland Road, was rea.d.
It wa.s moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that the
communication be filed and permit granted. Motion carried.
At this time the City C:lerk requested permission
to transfer $81,640.53 from an a.ccount in the First National
Bank of Vernon to the Bank of America for the purpose of pay-
ing bond interest and redempt ion of munic ipal bonds.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Durbin, tha.t the
]lfayor and City Treasurer be instructed to make said transfer.
Motion carried.

consisting of the following items, were read:

demands be allowed and warrants drawn for the amount. Mot ion

Demand of M. T. Markovich in the sum of $24,502.69
on Munic ipa.l Sewer District No.2. was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Durbin, that the
demand be all.owed and wa.rrant drawn for the amount. Mot ion
carried.
There being no further business, it was moved by
Levy, seconded by Durbin, that the meeting adjourn. Motion
carried.
