MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE
CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERNON,
HELD TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 1936, AT
THREE 0' CLOCK P. M., AT THE CITY
HALL OF THE CITY OF VERNON, 4305

The meeting was called to order by the Mayor,
,T. J. Furlong.
COu1lcilmen present: Furlong, Leonis, Durbin, Peralta
Councilmen absent: Levy
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that
the reading of the Minutes of the previous meeting be dis-
pensed with. Motion carried.
Communication from Littlejohn Reuland Company,
requesting curb in front of its establishment at 2655 Santa Fe
Avenue, to be painted green or yellow, with a 20 ~nute park-
ing l~it for customers, was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that
the same be referred to the Police Department for investiga-
tion and report. Motion carried.
Petition of Ernest O. Reiman that certain property
located at 26th and So to Streets be included in the oil zone,
was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin, that the
same be referred to the City Engineer and the Committee of the
Whole for investigation and report. Motion carried.
Report of the Southern California Gas Company an
Los Angeles County Franchise No. 463 was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin, that
the report be filed. Motion carried.
Dircular letter from the League of California
Municipalities, regarding establishing of uniform license
rates, was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin, that
the letter be filed and reported to the City Attorney. Mo-
tion carried.
Circular letter from the League of California
Municipalities, regarding proposed local option initiative
amendment, was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that
the same be eeferred to the City Attorney. Motion carried.
Communication from Dated Mayonnaise, Inc., request-
ing a permit to conduct buxiness at 4806 Everett Avenue, was
read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta; that
the same be filed and permit granted. Motion carried.
Proposal submitted by Jorgenson & Company, on termite
control in City Hall and Fire House, was read.

It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin, that
the proposal be filed and referred to.the Building Depart-
ment and the City Engineer for report. Motion carried.
Communications from the following firms for per-
mission to haul refuse from their premises located in the
city of Vernon, upon and along the public streets of the
city, were read:
Dated Mayonnaise Inc.
Oxweld Acetylene Co.
Phelps Dodge Copper Products Corp.
It was moved by Leonis,seconded by DUrbin, that
the communications be filed and permits granted. Motion
carried.
Connnunicationfrom Stauffer Chemical Company, regard-
ing excavation application to lay conduit pipes across East
26th Street, was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that
the commUnication be referred to the Connnittee of the Whole
for study. Motion carried.
At this time the City Engineerreconnnended that the
bid of Duncan Electric Company for the furnishing of meters
to the City be rejected, as it does not conform to specifica-
tions.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin, that
the reconnnendation of-the City Engineer be concurred in and
that the bidder's check be returned to the bidder. Motion
carried.
At this ti:methe City Engineer requested authority
to employ Jack Emmons as tunnel inspector upon the storm
drain, at a salary not to exceed $175.00 per month.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that
the City Engineer be so authorized to'employ said Jack
Emmons at a salary not to exceed $175.00 per month. Motion
carried.
RESOLUTION NO. 776, a resolution authorizing and
instructing the City Treasurer to create a special fund to
be known as the "Special Gas Tax Street Improvement Fundff
for the city, wherein all funds received from the State of
California from the. collection of gasoline tax shall be
deposited, was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that
RESOLUTION NO. 776 be adopted. Motion carried.
RESOLUTION NO. 777, a resolution authorizing all
moneys deposited for the year 1935-1936 in the Speoial Gas
Tax Street Improvement Fund to be used for aha. inconnaction
wi th the improvement of Vernon Avenue, was 2eaCL.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that
RESOEUTION NO. 777 be adopted. Motion carried.
RESOLUTION NO. 778, a resolution authorizing and
instructing the City Treasurer tot ransfer from the City's V.
Emergency Fund to the Vernon Avenue Storm Drain Fund, in
connection-with Works Progress Administration, the sum of
$44,748.00, was read.

It was moved by DUrbin, seconded by Peralta,
that RESOLUTION NO. 778 be adopted. Motion carried.
RESOLUTION NO.779,a.resolution authorizing and
inKtructing the City Treasurer to transfer from the Light
and Power Fund" to the Light"and Power Extension Fund the
sum of $20,000.00, "was read.
It was moved by DUrbin, seconded by Peralta,
that RESOLUTION NO. 779 be adopted. Motion carried.
Minutes of the meetings of the Water & Power Com-
mittee of February 11 and 18, 1936, were read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by DUrbin,
that the same be filed. Motion carried.
The following applications, all having the approval
of the City Engineer, were read:
Application 4721: . of Sperry Flour Company, for building permit
to repair opening for sliding door at 4309 Fruitland Road.
Approximate cost $30.00.
Ap~lication 4722: of Sandberg Furni~ur~ Company, for permit
to install 550 gallon gasoline tank and pump at 6000 South
Boyle Avenue. Approximate,cost $125.00.
Application 4723: .of U. S.Lime Products Company, for permit
'toconstr'uct addition to present warehouse at 1840 East 25th
Street. Approximate cost $1500.00.
Application 4724: of Johnston Pump Company, ' for permit to
construct open shed at 2324 East 49th Street. Approximate cost
$90.00.
Application 4725: of L. A. Union Stock Yards, for perIllit to
construct office building"at Downey Road and Vernon Avenue.
Approximate cost $4000.00. ..
Application 4726: of Buttress & McClellan Ltd., for permit
to construct warehouse and factory ouilding at 3817 Santa Fe
Avenue. Approximate cost $20,000.00. .
Application 4727: of Dated Mayonnaise Co., for permit to
construct wood'tank on roof at 4806 Everett Avenue. Approxi-
mate cost $100.00.
