MINUTES OF A REGULAR :MEETING OF THE
CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF'VERNON,
HE~ TUESDAY, MARCH 3, 1936, AT
THREE O'CLOCK P. M., AT THE CITY
HALL OF THE CITY OF VERNON, 4305
SANTA FE AVENUE, VERNON, CALIFORNIA.
The meeting was called to order by the Mayor,
J. J. Furlong.

It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Durbin, that
the reading"of the Minutes of the previous meeting be dis-
pensed with. Motion carried.
Report of GeneralPetroletim Corporation, on city
of Vernon Franchise Ordinances Nos. 80 and 152, and Los
Angeles County' Ordinance No~ 299, with check attached in
the sum of $40.67, was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that
the check be accepted and the communication filed. Motion
carried.
Report of the Southern California Gas Company, on
Franchise-Ordinances Nos. 89, 270, 463 and 515, f6t' the
year 1935, with check attached in the sum of $670.01, was
read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that
the same be referred to the Finance Committee. Motion
carried.
Comri1unica.tion fromJ. B. Leonis Inc., regarding
prohibition of the city from using the land described in
the communication to build a storm drain without-first se-
curing per.mission from the corporation, was read.
It was moved bY-Peralta., seconded by Durbin, that
the communication be received, accepted and filed, and the
Clerk instructed to acknowledge same. Motion carried.
Circular letter from the League of' Calif'ornia
Municipalities, regarding proposed liquor legislation, was
read. _
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that
the same be f'iled. Motion carried.
CommUnica.tion from Standard Pipe & Supply Company,
requesting permission to f'ill driveway"at 4441 Santa Fe
Avenue with brick bat~, etc., was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that
the matter be ref'erred to the Police Department. Motion
carried.
Communication f'rom Harry Boorstein Inc., regarding
certain methods used by the lef't wing of I.L.G.W. on the
manufacturers of' garments, was read.

It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that
the same be referred to the Committee of the Whole. Motion
carried.
Communication from E. Russell Werdin, requesting
permit to'conduct a general contracting business at 3700'
See Soto street, was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Durbin, that
the communication be filed and permit granted. Motion car-
ried.
Communication from Furniture Containers Inc., re-
questing'permit to conduct business at 4717 District Blvd.,
was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by'Durbin, that
the communication be filed and ~ermit granted. Motion carried.
Communication from Mrs. Maude Lange and Miss Nora
Poweil, for permit to conduct a restaurant at 5710 Santa Fe
Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by"Durbin, that
the same be referred to the Police Department. Motion carried.
Communication fromO. M. Newcombe, city fireman,
requesting' permission to remove model T-Ford transmission
from junk pile in rear of city property, was read.
It was moved by DUrbin, seconded' by, Peralta, that
the same be referred to the City Engineer. Motion carried.
Co:mmunications from Ch.ristensen Plating Works and
American Can Company for permits to haul refuse from their
premises upon and'along the public streets of the city of
Vernon, were read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Durbin, that
the communications be filed and permits granted. Motion
carried.
Communication from Los Angeles Brush lfunufacturing
Company, for permit to removep6plar tree from premises at
2208 East 37th street, was read.
It was m~ved by Peralta, seconded by'Durbin, that
the communicationpbe filed and permit granted. Motion carried.
At this time the City Engineer requested that the
salary ofnK. E. Watson be increased to $200.00 per month from'
February 15, 1936, to the end of the W. P. A. storm drain job.
It was moved by DUrbin, seconded by Peralta, that
the request of the City Engineer be concurred in. Motion
carried.
Communication from W. H. De Sellem, requesting
additional 75 cents per month to cover expenses in sending
out water and electric bills on the first of-each month,
was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that
the same. be filed. Motion carried.

RESOLUTION NO. 780, a resolutioh establishing
polling places, a.ppointing election officers to conduct
the general municipal election to be held April 14, 1936,
and fixing their compensation, ~as read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that
Resolution No. 780 be adopted. Motion carried.
Report of the Police Department was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Durbin, that
the same be filed. Motion carried.
Communication from California Walnut Growers'
Association, requestirig appointment"of Frank L. Bridgewater
as special police officer, was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by DUrbin, that
the communica.tion be referred to the Police Department.
Motion carried.
Minutes of the meeting~of the Water & Power Committee
of February 25, i.ndC'~rch(:3,s1936, were read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that the
same be filed. Motion carried.

Application 4746: of California Walnut Growers' Association,
for permit to install insulation in warehouse at 2700 Fruitland
Road. Approximate cost $15,000.00.

It was moved by Durbin, seconded by' Peralta, that
the applications be filed and permits granted. Motion carried.
'Demands on the General Fund in the sum of $14,020.43
were read.
It was moved by DUrbin, seconded by Peralta., that
the demands be allowed a.nd'warrants. drawn on the Treasurer
for the same. Motion carried.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that
