MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE
CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERNON,
HELD TUESDAY, MAY 19, 1936, AT THREE
O'CLOCK P. M., AT THE CITY HALL OF
THE CITY OF VERNON, 4305 SANTA FE
AVENUE, VERNON, CALIFORNIA.

The meeting was called to order by the Mayor, J. J.
Councilmen present: Furlong, Leonis, Durbin, Levy,
Peralta
Councilmen absent: None
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta, that the
reading of the Minutes of the previous meeting be dispensed
with. Motion carried.
Report of. the Fire Department on connnuhication
from E.K.Wood Lumber Company, in. reference to blasting
reservoir on their premises was read. The Fire Chief'reported
that the work bad been let for the removal of said reservoir
without using dynamite.
It was moved by LeonIs, seconded by Durbin, that
the report of the Fire Chief be f~~ed. Motion carried.

application No. 4822foruthe construction of a warehouse at
5735-41 First Street, was read, wherein Mr. Brower stated
that the building is to be used for the sale, fabrication and
repair of agricultural'and building equipment; that no junk
material is to be used.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Durbin, that the
communication be filed and the permit granted. Motion carried.
Cammunicationfram the Department of Police of Los
Angeles, regarding traffic conditions at 25th and Alameda
Streets, 38th and Alameda Streets, Vernon Avenue and Alameda
Street, and 55th and Alameda Streets, were read.
It was l110vedby Leonis, secoridedby Levy, that the
communication be referred to'the Police, Engineering and
Legal departments for report. Motion carried.
Communication from A. B. Naismith, :f$r permit to
operate a pattern shop at 2312 East 37th Street, was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by"Durbin, that
the communication be filed and permit granted. Motion carried.
. Communication from Wesley T. Anderson, for permit
to operate a fountain lunch and cafe at 4533 Produce Plaza,
was read.
. It was moved by LeVy, seconded by Peralta, that the
same be' referred to t he Police Department for report. Motion
carried.
C ommurii cat ion from A. B. Naismith, for permit to
haul refuse from premises at 2312 East 37th Street, upon' and
along the public streets of the city of Vernon, wa.s read.

It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta, that the
communication be filed and permit granted. Motion carried.
Communication from the City~ttorney of Los Angeles,
regarding State taxation of motor vehicles, was read.
It was moved by DUrbin, seconded by Peralta, that
the communication be filed. Motion carried.
RESOLUTION NO. 790, a resolution approving Specifi-
cations No. 82, for fuel oil, was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that
Resolution No. 790 be adopted. Motion carried.
At this time Councilman Durbin introduced RESOLUTION
NO. 79J., a resolution authorizing and instructing the Mayor
and City Clerk to execute a certain easement in the name of
the City, and moved its adoption, which was seconded by
Councilman Levy, and carried.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that
the City Clerk be instructed to advertise for bids for the
furnishing of fuel oil to the City. Motion carried.
Report of the consulting engineer, Edward Bowen, was read.
It was moved by DUrbin, seconded by Peralta, that the
report of Edward Bowen, consulting engineer, be accepted and
approved. Motion carried.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that, owing
to a defect in the advertisement for bids for the drilling of
a water we11, the action of the City Council on May 12, 1936,
in awarding a contract to the Roscoe M~s Company for the drill-
ing of a water we11 be, and the same hereby is, rescinded; and
that the bid of Roscoe Moss Company for the drilling of said
well be rejected and the bidder's check returned. Motion carried.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that the
City Clerk advertise for a new water well site, said site to
be in the city of Vernon, east of Soto Street. Motion carried.
Communication from the Central Manufacturing Dis-
trict, in reference to a proposed water well site, was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that the
same be filed. Motion carried.
:Minutes of the Committee on Water &: Power for the
meetings of May 12th and 19th, 1936, were read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Levy, that the
same be filed. Motion carried.
The following applications, all having the approval
of the City Engineer, were read:
Application 4837: of Gene~al Petroleum Corporation, for permit
:Co remodel laboratory at 2525 East 37th Street. Approximate
cost $1000.00.
Application 4838: of Lucerne Creamery Company, for permit to
construct foundations and. supports for two boilers at 4300
South Alameda Street. Approximate cost $3000.00.

Application 4839: o:f General Petroleum Corporation, :for per-
mIt to remodel test laboratory at 2525 East 37th Street.
Approximate cost $1500.00.
Application 4840: ..o:f General Petroleum Corporation, :for per-
mit to remodel laboratory at 2525 East 37th Street. Approxi-
mate cost $1560.00.
Applioation 4841: o:f Certi:fied Grocers o:f C~li~ornia, :for
permit to oonstruct addition to warehouse at Fruitland and
Loma Vista Avenue. Approximate cost $86,000.00.
,Application 4842: ..o:fFi:nkelstein Foundry Supply Company,
flor permit to construct addition :for toilet and shower pur-
poses, at 2323 East 27th Street. Approximate cost $160.00.
Application 4843: of Union Die Casting Company, :for permit
to connect to sewer at 2313 East 51st Street.
Application 4844: of Louis M. Kau:frman, :for permit to oon-
nect to sewer at 2641 Santa Fe Avenue.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded~by Du.rbin, that the
applioations be :filed and permits issued. Motion oarried.
Demands on the General Fund in the sum o:f $34,043.59
were read.

demands' be allowed and warrants drawn :for the same. Motion
oarried.
