MINUTES OF AN ADJOURNED REGULAR MEET-
ING OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF.VERNON, HELD TUESDAY, JUNE 30,
1936, AT 3:30 O'CLOCK P. M., AT THE
CITY HALL OF THE CITY OF VERNON,
4305 SANTA FE AVENUE, VERNON, CALI-
FORNIA.

The meeting was called to order by the Mayor,
J. J. Furlong.
Councllmelll present: Furlong, Leonis, Durbin,
Levy, Peralta
Councilmen absent: None
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that
the reading or the Minutes of the previous meeting be dis-
pensed with. Motion carried.
Communication trom Cook Compan.y,stating that they
are contempla.ting the manufactUring of road equipment
bulldozers, angledozers and power units, at 2900 Santa Fe
Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Levy, secon.ded by Durbin, that the
communication be filed. Motion carried.
Communication. from H. M.. Andrews, r.eqllesting per-
mit to operate a cafe at 2100 East Vernon Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Durbin, that
the comm1J.n.ication be referred to the Police Department.
Motion carried.
COmmUnication.s fram Ba.ash~Ross Tool Company and
Hall Scott Motor CarCompany,reqtiestin.gpermits to haul
refuse from their premises upon and along the public streets
of the city of Vernon, were read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that
the communications be filed and per.mits granted. Motion
carried.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta, that
E. R. Young be employed as special counsel to assist the
City Attorney in ma~ing a study of the utilities owned by
the city, and report his rindings to the Water & Power Com-
mittee. Motion carried.
Communication from Vietor Equipment Company, with
proposal tor certain materials and equipment for Water Well
No.2, was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Levy, that the
matter be referred to Mr. Thal1mer, of the Water Department
of the City, for report back to this Council July 1, 1936,
at 3:30 o'clock P. M. Motion carried. .
At this time the Mayor reported on the letter from
Mr. Boyle, of the Boyle Manufa.ctUring Company, referred to
him, and presented written suggestions as follows:
That .owing.to friction existing in the organiza-
tion of the City, I would suggest for the sake of harmony
and the best interest or the City that all City orrices

held by Howard McCUrdy be declared vacant and 'that Mr.
Thal1mer be appointed temporary City Engineer; Mr.
McComb, the Plant Superintendent in charge of Diesel
engines and operation andall men working in, aro'Undor
in any manner with the Diesel engines, and that Wayne
Johnson be appointed the Electrical Engineer in charge
of all electric equipment and all distribution of
electricity arid all men employed in this department, and
fUrther suggest that theVernOll Industrial Development
Association, as representatives of the manufacturers of
the City.. of Vernon appoint a man from their organization
to cooperate with the Water and Power Co~ttee in the
successful operation of the ElectrieGerieratorand Dis-
tribution Plot in the City of Vernon, and the City Clerk
immediately take charge of all City Engineering, Water
and Electrical Department records and data.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Durbin, . that the
suggestions of the Mayor be received and approved and the
necessary steps be taken to carry them into execution, and
that the City Clerk write the Vernon Industrial Development
Association setting forth the Council's desires for coopera-
tion from that organization. Motion carried.
ORDINANCE NO. 493" an ordinance fixing the rates
to be charged for electric energy distributed and supplied
by the City was read for second reading.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that
ORDINANCE NO. 493 be passed for second reading. Motion
carried.
ORDINANCE NO. 493, an ordinance fixing the I' ates

It'was moved by DUrbin, seconded by Levy, that
ORDINANCE NO. 493 be adopted. Motion carried by the follow-

The following applications, not being approved, were
laid over until the next regular meetlng:Applications Nos.
4874, 4875, 4676, 4877, 4878, 4880, 4881 and 4882.
AplJlication 4879: of Standard Oil Company , for permit to
erect service station at'3825 Santa Fe Avenue, at an approxi-
mate cost of $2000.00, was read.
It was moved by Leonie, seconded by Levy, that
the application be filed and permit granted. Motion carried.
At this time Howard McCurdy presented his resigna-
tion as City Engineer, to take effect August 1, 1936, and
requested a thirty-days leave of absence.
xt this time Councilman Durbin introduced RESOLUTION
NO. 794; a resolution accepting the resignationo:f Howard.
McCurdy, and moved its adoption, which was seconded by Council-
man Levy, and carried.
Councilman Durbin introduced RESOLUTION NO. 795,
a resolution appointing Wayne N. Johnson as chief electrical

engineer, and moved itsadoption~ whieh was seconded by
Councilman Levy, and carried.
Councilman DUrbin introduced RESOLUTION NO~796~
a resolution appointingT. M. McComb as chief engineer
of the city's power plant, and m.oved its adopti6n~ which
was seconded by Councilman Peralta, and carried.
Councilman Durbin introduced RESOLUTION NO. 797,

which was seconded by Councilman Peralta, and carried.
It was moved by-DUrbin, seconded by Peralta, that
all moneys in'the General FUnd at the close of'business
J'uD.e 30,1936~ not heretofore appropriated, be, arid the
same hereby are, transferred to the city's Emergency Fund.
Motion carried.
It was moved by Levy~ seconded by Du.rbin, that
this meeting adjourn to Wednesday, July 1, 1936, at 3:30
