MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE
CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERNON,
HELD TUESDAY, JULY 7, 1936, AT 3: 00
O'CLOCK P. M., AT THE CITY HALL OF
THE CITY.. OF VERNON, 4305 SANTA FE
AVENUE, VERNON, CALIFORNIA.

The meeting was called to order by the Mayor,
J. J. Furlong.
Councilmen present: Furlong, Leonis, Durbin
Councilmen absent: Levy, Peralta
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Leonis, that
the reading of the Minutes of the previous meeting be dis-
pensed with. Motion carried.
At this time the Clerk announced that he had on
hie desk bids for the furnishing of trucks to the City.
It was moved by Leonis~ seconded by Durbin, that
the clerk open and read the bids. Motion carried.
At this time the Clerk opened and publicly read
bids from the following firms:
E. J. Hilton
Winslow B. Felix
Lloyd L. Kin.g~ Inc.
Maurice J. Sopp
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin, that
the bids be referred to the City Engineer for checking and
report on July 14, 1936. Motion carried.
Circular letter from League of California Munic-
ipalities, regarding "In lieu tax allocation", was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin, that
the same be filed. Motion carried.
Communication from Thos. D. To.les, complaining
of nuisance alleged to be committed by the Filtrol Company,
was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Leonis, that
the communication be filed and referred to the Vernon Indus-
trial Development Association. Motion carried.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Leonis, that
all bids for the purchase of land be rejected except the bid
of N. McMenamin, and that the land described in said bid be
bought by the city upon the recommendation of the consulting
engineer, whose recommendation was that the land purchased
should be west of Downey Road, and the Clerk'be instructed
to return all checks to unsuc':'essful bidders. Motion carried.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Leonis, that
the CJe rk be instructed to advertise for bids for the pur-
chase of one oil centrifuge for the power plant, said pur-
chase having heretofore been approved by the Water and Power
Committee. Motion carried.

It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin, that
the Mayor appoint a committee to act as the Building Com-
mittee, to work in conjunction with the building checker,
and that all applications ~or building permits be referred
to this committee. Motion carried.
The Mayor appointed Councilmen Leonis and Durbin
and himself.
At this time Durbin introduced RESOLUTION NO. 800,
a Resolution authorizing the City Engineer to Sign all . .
certificates required by the Works Progress A~nistration,
and moved its adoption, which was seconded by Leonis, and
carried.

It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin, that
the City Clerk and City Engineer make requisition for the
necessary furniture for the City Engineer's office. Motion
carried.
The following applications, having hereto.fore been
checked by the building checker, were read:
Application 4874: of' L. A. Young Spring &: Wire Co., for build-
ing permit to construct warehouse and'factory at 3200 East
Slauson Avenue. Approximate cost $20,000.00.
Application 4875: of Carl Male, for per.mit to construct store
room at 2328 East Vernon Avenue. Approximate cost $200.00.
Application 4876: of.DistrietPhoto and Engraving Company,
f'or permit to remodel store .front at 4539 Produce Plaza.
Approximate cost $70.00.
Application 4877: of' Angelus Sanitary Can Machine Company, for
permIt to alter door at 49th and Pacif'ic Blvd. Approximate
cost $100.00.
Application 4878: of Studebaker Corporation, for permit to
construct new' addi tion to auto assembly plant at Lorna Vista and
District Blvd. ApprOXimate cost $186,000.00
Application 4883: of Tecbnicraft Corp., for permit to con-
struct galvanized iron wire fence at 1520 to 5610 Soto Street.
Approximate cost $500.00.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin, that the
applications be filed and permits granted. Motion carried.
Application 4884: of Studebaker Corporation, for permit to
install 750b gallon gasoline tank at 4530 Loma Vista Avenue,
at an approximate cost of $500.00 was read.
This application havIng the approval of the Fire
Department, it was moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin, that.
the application be filed and permit granted. Motion carried.
Application 4885: of Southern California Edison Company,
~orpermit to move pole from driveway 269 feet south o~ 38th
Street, to 284 feet south of 38th Street, was read.
ThIs application having the approval of' the Chief
Electrical Engineer, it was moved by Leonis, seconded by
Durbin, that the application be filed and permit granted.

Application 4886: of Independent Foundry Supply O~'1,
for permit to connect to sewer at 2325 East 38th Street,
was read.

Communication from Pacific Car Demurrage BUreau,
regarding demurrag@ charges'of '42~OO'due to sewer cave-in
at 37th and Alameda Streets, was read.
It was moved by Leonia, secon.ded oy Durbin, that
the communication be filed. Motion carried.

Commi ttee of June 23 and 30, and July 7, 1936, were read.
