MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE
CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF" VERNON,
HELD TUESDAY, JULY 21, 1936, AT
3:00 O'CLOOK P. M., AT THE CITY HALL

The'meeting was called to order by the Mayor,
J. J. FUrlong .

It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that
the reading'of the. Minutes of the previous meeting be dis-
pensed with. Motion carried.
At this tIme 'the City Clerk announced that he had
one bid upon his desk , pursuant to aotice advertising for
bids for fuel oil centrifuge.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that
the Clerk open and publicly declare the bid. Motion carried.
At this time the Clerk opened and publicly read
bid from The Sharples Specialty Co. of California.
It was moved by Durbin; seconded by Peralta, that
the bid'be referred to the Engineer for checking. Motion
carried.
Communication from DeLaval Pacific Company, stating
that they were unable to bid on the centrifuge, was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that
the communIcation be filed. Motion carried.
Communication from Baash-Ross Tool Company, request-
ing per.missIon to paInt a large STOP sign between entrance and'
main roadway on Boyle Avenue in front of their plant, was read.
It.was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta, that the
matter be rei'erred to the Police Department. Motion carried.
Communication from L. A. Saratoga Chip Co., request-
ing per.missionto manufacture peanut butter and prepare salted
nuts at 4513 Produce Plaze, was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Durbin, that
the communication be filed and pe~t granted. Motion carried.
Communication from H. A. Thalimer, City Engineer,
requesting authority to repaint walls and ceilings of the
engineer's office with lighter colored paint, was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Durbin, that
the request be granted. Motion carried.
Communication from H. A. Thalimer, City Engineer,
requesting authority to have water department buildings and
garages used by difference departments in r ear of the city hall
repainted, was read.
It ",as InoV'ed by Leonis, seconded by Peralta, that
the request b~ granted. Motion carried.

Communication from Owens Illinois Pacific Coast
Company~ forper.m1t to haul refuse from premises upon and
along the streets of the city of Vernon~ was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta~ that
the communication be filed and permit granted. Motion car-
ried.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin, that
the City Engineer be instructed to establish grade on East
Vernon Avenue, and submit plans and specifications to take
care of drainage in that district, at the earliest possible
moment. Motion carried.
At this time the Chief Plant Engil'leer recommended
that The Sharples Specialty Co. of California be awarded
the contract for the centrifuge.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin, that the
recommendation of the Chief Plant Engineer be concurred in
and that the City Attorney be instructed to draw a contract
covering same. Motion carried.
ORDINANCE NO. .494, relating to the. care and ex-
penditure of money received by the Water Department of the
City of Vernon, was read for second reading.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that
Ordinance No. 494 be passed for second reading. Motion
carried.

ORDINANCE NO. 494, relating to the care and ex-
penditure of money received by the Water Department of the
City of Vernon, was read for third and final reading.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that
Ordinance No. 494 be adopted. Motion carried by the follow-

ORDINANCE NO. 495 ,an ordinance granting consent
of the-City to the County for the improvement of Washington
Street, was read for first readil'lg.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin, that
Ordinance No. 495 be passed for first reading. Motion
Oarried.
RESOLUTION No. 804, transferring from the Emergency Fund
to the Water Construction FUnd the sum of $26,015.58, was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Leonis, that
Resolution No. 804 be adopted. Motion carried.
RESOLUTION NO. 805, approving Specifications No.
· 86a, was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that
Resolution No. 805 be adopted. Motion carried.
RESOLUTION NO. 806, amending Section 2 of Resolution
No. 795, was read.

It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that
Resolution No. 806 be adopted. Motion carried.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Leonis, that
the Clerk advertise for bids for one motor driven lubricating
oil centrifuge, and that the Chief. Plant Engineer furnish
the City Attorney with"the specifications therefor so that
he may draw the notice. Motion carried.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Leonis, that
the Gilmore Oil Company be granted a contract for the rur.'
nishing of gasoline to the city for the period of one year.
Motion carried.
Report of the Police Department was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta, that
the same be filed. Motion carried.
Minutes of the Water & Power Committee for meetings
of July 14th and 21st, were read.
It was moved by Peralta,' seconded by Durbin, that
the same be filed. Motion carried.
The following applications, all having the approval
of the Building Committee, were read:

Approximate cost $3500.00.
Application 189m: of Merchants Packing Company, for permit
to construc.t work'shop at 3029 East Vernon Avenue. Approxi-
mate cost $120.00.
Application 4892: of. Axelson Manufacturing Company, for permit
to construct factory and Warehouse at 6160 Boyle Avenue.
Approximate cost $9000.00. '
Application 4893: of Filtro1 Company, for permit to construct
storage shed at 1755 Downey Road. Approximate cost $100.00.
Application 4894: of Sperry Flour Company, for permit to
install fire escape at 4309 Fruitland Road. Approximate cost
$200.00. .

Demands on the General Fund in the sum of $42,007.32
were read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta, that the
demands be allowed and warrants drawn f'or the same. Motion
carried.
It was moved by Leonis, seoonded by Peralta, that this
meeting adjourn to July 28, 1936, a . o'clock P. M. Motion
