MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE
CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERNON,
HELD TUESDAY, AUGUST 4, 1936, AT
THREE 0 f CLOCK P. M., AT THE CITY
HALL OF THE CITY OF VERNON, 4305

The 'meeting was called to order by t he Mayor,
J. J. Furlong.
Councilmen present: Furlong, Leonis, Durbin,
Levy, Peralta
Councilmen absent: None
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta, that
the reading'of the Minutes of the ~evious meeting be dis-
pensed with. Motion carried.
At this time the City Clerk announced that he had
one bid upon his desk for fUrnishing to the city a Diesel
electric generating unit.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, 'that
the Clerk proceed to open the bid. Motion carried.
At this time the Clerk opened and read the bid
of The Hooven, Owen, Rentschler Co.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin, that the
bid be referred to the Electrical Engineer, Plant Engineer .
and the Water & Power Committee for report. Motion carried.
Communication f'romthe City Engineer, stating that
the proposal of Roscoe Moss Company f'or the drilling of the
water wel+ urgently needed by the City was the lowest bid
submitted,.but the guaranteed time was twice as long as that
required by the Barber&Bridge Drilling Corp. Ltdj, and "
recommended that the bid of Barber & Bridge Drilling " Corp.
Ltd. be accepted and that it be awarded the contract.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that the
rec~mmendation of the City Engineer be concurred in and that"
the contract be awarded to the Barber & Bridge Drilling Corp.
Ltd., as' the lowest and best bid, and that all other bids be
rejected, ana certified checks returned to the unsuccessful
bidders. Motion carried.
Communication fram W. N. Johnson, Chief Electrical
Engineer, stating estimated cost covering labor and material
for the installation of two electric illumdnated'boulevard
stop signs at 38th and Alameda Streets, wa8eread.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by LeVy, that the
matter oe laid over to the next regular meeting. Motion
carried.
Report of Southern " California Gas Company on Los
Angeles County Franchise No. 463, for the period Jan. 1,
1936, to June 30, 1936, inclusive, was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Leonis, that
the same be filed. Motion carried.

Communication from Central Manufacturing District,
Inc., regarding water connection at Vernon and Downey Road,
was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that
the same be filed. Motion carried.
Communication from Irving Alpert, for permit to
operate and conduct a store at 5210 Santa Fe Avenue, was
read.
It .was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta, that
the communication be filed and permit granted. Motion
carried.
Communication from Karl Strobel Corp., for permit
to conduct"business of manufacturing Flux Plated Welding
Electrodes, Welding Rods, Welding" FluXes, Aro Welders and
Arc Saws, at 4700 Santa Fe Avenue, was read.

. It was moved by Levy, seoonded by Durbin, that the
communication be filed and permit granted. Motion oarried.
Communication from Meohanioal Pattern &: Foundry Co.,
for permission to paint sidewalk indioating" loading zone
in front of its plant at 4545 Pacific Blvd., was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta, that
the same be referred to the Police Department. Motion carried.
Communication from the Pioneer Flintkote Company, for
permit to.haul refuse from its premises at 5500 South Alameda
Street; upon and' along the public streets of the City of
Vernon, was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that
the communication be filed and permit granted. M~tion oarried.
Report of the Police Department was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that the
same be filed. Motion carried.
RESOLUTION NO. 816, requesting the United States Post
Office Department to erect a post office building in the city
o~ Vernon, was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Leonis, that
Resolution No. 816 be adopted. Motion carried.
ORDINANCE NO. 496, establishing rates for the sale
of Water in the city of Vernon was read for second reading.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that
Ordinance No. 496 be passed for second reading. Motion carried.
ORDINANCE NO. 496, establishing rates for the sale
of Water in the 'oity of Vernon, was read for third-and final
reading.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that
Ol141nance No. 496 be adopted. Motion carried by the follow-
ing vote:

RESOf.iUTION NO. 817, transferring from the
Emergency Fund to the several bond interest and redemp-
tion fuilds" in. lieu of delinquent taxes, the sum of
$12,990~99, was read.
It was mOved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that
Resolution No. 817 be adopted. Motion carried.
:Minutes of the meetings of the Wa. ter & Power
Committee of JUly 28th and August 4th, 1936, were read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Levy, that
the same be filed. Motion carried.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin; that
the application of E. B. KiBBn, 1233 So. Spaulding, Los
Angeles, for permit to conduct and operate the distribu-
tionand sale of used pipe and machinery at 4443 Santa Fe
Avenue, 'Vernon, be approved and the permit granted. Motion
carried.
Application 4907: of Los Angeles Gas & Electric Corp.,
f'or permit to aoandon gas service on East Vernon Avenue
between Hawthorne Avenue and St. Charles Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Dtlrbin, seconded by Peralta, that
the application be filed and permit granted. Motion car~ied.n
Communication from Tecbnicraft Engineering Corp~,
stating they have gra.n.ted permission to the Huntington Park
Rotary Club to erect a'Boy Scout Hut on their property
located on Soto Street, and that'it is the"owner's inten-
tion to erect a chain link fence, was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta, that
the communication be filed and the permit be issued to the
Huntington Park Rotary Club to build said hut. Motion
carried.
Demands on the General Fund in the sum of $12,964.32
were read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta, that
the demands be' allowed and warrants drawn for the same.
Motion carried.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin, that
this meeting adjourn to August 11, 1936, at three o'clock
P. M. Motion carried. .
