The meeting was called to order by t he Mayor, J. J.
Councilmen present: FUrlong, Leonis, Du.rbin, Levy,

Councilmen absent: None
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta, that the reading
of the Minutes" of the previous meeting be dispensed with.
Motion carried.
ORDINANCE NO. 497, approving the budget for the
fiscal year 1936-37 was read for second reading.
It waS moV'edby Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that
ORDINANCE NO. 497 be passed for second reading. Motion
carried.
ORDINANCE' NO. 497~ approving the budget for the
fiscal year 1936-37, was read for third and final reading.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that
ORDINANCE NO. 497 be adopted. Motion carried by the follow-
ing vote:

ORDINANCE NO. 498 fixing the rate of taxes and levy-
ing the taxes for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 1936, was
read for second reading.
It'was movedbjDurbin, seconded by Peralta, that
ORDINANCE NO. 498 be passed tor second reading. Motion
carried.
ORDINANCE NO. 498 fixing the rate of taxes and "
levying the taxes tor the tiscal year beginning JUly 1, 1936~
was read tor third and tinal reading.
It was moved by-Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that
ORDINANCE NO. 498 be adopted. Motion carried by the tollowing

fornia~r egarding "boulevard stop signs at 38th and Alameda
Streets, was read.
It was moved bj Du.rbin, seconded by peralta, that
the matter be referred to a committee consisting 0'1. Councilman
Leonie, Chief Electrical Engineer Johnson, Chief of Police
Giles, and City Attorney Cassidy. Motion carried.
Communication from Edmond S. Gillette, Mayor ot
Santa Monica, regarding convention of &eague ot California'
MUnicipalities to be held in Santa Monica Sept. 9-l2~ 1936~
was read.

It was moved by Levy, seconded by Durbin, that
the seme be .filed. Motion carried.
Communication from State Bepartment of Public
Health, regarding convention of League of California
MUnicipalities, Sept. 9th to 12th, inclusive, was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by nu-bin, that
the same be filed. Motion carried.
Communications from Rich Manufacturing Company,
requesting permit to paint curb at 3851 Santa Fe Avenue,
was read.
It was moved by Leonis,seconded by'Peralta, that
the same be referred to the Police Department. Motion car-
ried.
Communications .from R. H. Parr and Harmon Packing
Company, for permits to haul refuse from their premises upon
and along the public streets of the City of Vernon, were read.
It was moved by Leollis, seconded by DUrbin, that
the communications be filed and permits granted. Motion
carried.
Report of the Police Department on the application
of Federated Metals Corp. , requesting permit to illS tall sign
in the vicinity of 26th and Downey Road, wa.s read. . The
Police Department reports' that the location selected is on
private'property arid that,no request coming from the owner
thereof, recommends that the application be denied.
It was moved by DUrbin, seconded by Levy, that
the report of'the Police Department be filed~and the
recommendation concurred in. Motion carried.
Report of the Police Department was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Levy, that
the same be filed. Motion carried.
The following applications, having the approval of
the City Engineer, were read:
Al>ylication 4933: of R. H. Parr, for permit to break curb
ana install ~ driveway on Santa Fe Avenue, 200 feet south of
27th Street.
Application 4934: of Gladys HOffman, for permit to break
curb :Lor driveway at 2305 East 38th Street.
Application 4935: of Lane Wells Company, for permit to
connect to sewer at 5600 Soto Street, for Boy Scout but.
Application 4938: of Southern California Gas Company, for
permIt to install g as service at 2423 East 28th Street.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that
the applications be filed and permits granted. Motion
carried.
Communication from United States Post Office
Department, acknowledging receipt of resolution adopted by
the City Council regarding Federal building to house the
Vernon Branch of the Los Angeles Post Office, was read.

It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin, that
the same be filed. Motion carried.
The following applications, having the approval
of the Building Committee, were read:
~lieation 4929: of Pioneer Provision Co., for permit to
maKe alterations at 4445 S. Soto street. Approximate cost
$2700.00.
Application 4930: of Swift 8: Company, for permit to con-
struct compressor :r-oom at 3750 Jewel_enue. App:r-oximate
cost $2634.00.
Application 4931: of Independent Foundry Supply Co., for
permi~ to construct sand bunkers at 2325 East 38th St:r-eet.
Approximate cost $1000.00.
A~plicat1on 4932: of California Oregon Paper Company, for
permIt to make alterations to paper mill at 2001 East 57th
Street. Approximabe cost $3000.00.
A~plication 4936: of L. A. Pacific Macaroni Company, for
per.mitto construct storage room at 4722 Everett Avenue.
Approximate cost $75.00.
Application 4937: of California Flaxseed Products Co., for
permIt to construct housing for boiler installation at 3135
East 26th Street. Appro~ate cost $500.00.
Application 4939: of Furlong Estates Inc., for permit to
demolish builUIiigs at the southeast corner of 52nd and
Alameda Street.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that
the applications be filed and permits granted. Motion
carried.
Recommendation of T. M.McComb, Chief Plant Engineer,
that the bid of The Sharples Special Co. of California be
accepted for the fUrnishing of lubricating oil centrifuge, was
read.
It was moved by Durbin,secop;ded by Peralta, that
the recommendation of the Chief Plant Engineer be filed and
contract for the furnishing of lubricating oil centrifUge be
awarded to The Sharples Specialty Co. of California, and that
the City Attorney be instructed to draw a contract covering
same. Motion carried.
RESOLUTION NO.819, approving recommendation of the
City Engineer with reference to repair and improvement of cer-
tain streets within the City, and ordering the City Clerk to
communicate with the Board of Supervisors, requesting money from
the State Gasoline Tax Fund for the doing of said work, was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconed:
