MI'NUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE
CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERNON,
HELD TUESDAY, OCTOBER 6, 1936, AT
THREE O'CLOCK P. M., AT THE CITY HALL
OF THE- CITY OF VERNON, 4305 Santa Fe
Avenue, Vernon, California.

The"meeting was called to order by the Kayor,
J. J. Furlong.

It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralt~ that
the reading'of the Minutes of' the previous meeting be dis-
pensed with. Motion carried.
At this time the Clerk announced that he had on
his desk bids fOr the :fuJ:'nishing to and erecting for the
City of a 421500 barrel steel tank, pursuant to notice
inviting sea ad proposals.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, , that
the Clerk proceed to read the bids. Motion carried.
At this time the Clerk read bids trom the
following f'1r.ms:
Standard Ts.nk Co.
Consolidated-Steel
Lacy Mfg. Co.
Chicago Bridge &: Iron Works
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy that all
bids be referred to the City Engineer and Water &: Power
Committee. Motion carried.
At this time the Clerk announced that he had on
his desk bids for the fttrnishing of distribution and power
transformers to the City of Vernon, pursuant to notice ad-
vertising for same.
It was movea by Leonis, seconded by Durbin, that
the Clerk proceed to open the bids. Motion carried.
The Clerk read bids from the following firms:
General Electric
A11is-Chal1'll.ers Jrg. Co.
Moloney Elec. Co.
It was moved by Dui-bin,seconded by Levy, that . the
bids be :referred to the Chief Electrical Erlgineer for check-
ing and report. Motion carried.
At this time the Chief Electrical Engineer recom-
mended that 'all bids be rejected except the bid of Moloney
Electric Co. and that it be awarded thecontract'for the
fUrnishing of distribution and power transformers.

checks of unsuccessful bidders be returned. Motion carried.
It was recommended by the City Engineer that the
bid of SfmplexValve & Meter Co. for the furnishing of Venturi
meter~ be accepted.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that
the recommendation of the City Engineer be concurred in and
that all bids be rejected except the bid of Simplex Valve &
Meter Co; that it be awarded the contract, and that checks
of unsuccessful bidders be returned. Motion carried.

permission to have curb painted at 2155 East 25th Street~ to
restrict parking, was read. .
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Levy~ that the
same be referred to the Police Department. Motion carried.
Communication from Ben Knight~ requesting permit
to build a lunch stand at" the southeast corner of 50th and
Magnolia Avenue, was read.
It wa.s moved by Durbin, seconded by Peru ta.~ that
the matter be referred to the Police Department. Motion
carried.
Report of the Fire Commission on recommendation of
Chief Artale that the position of F. F.Worth, fireman~ be
declared vacant effective October l~ 1936~ where the commission
suggested that the recommendation of the ~hief be approved, was
read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin, that the
report of the Fire Commission be approved and filed. Motion
carried.
CoIrimUriication from Strikol and Markus~ for permit
to opera.te restaurant at 4401 Downey Road, known as the Cowboy
Cafe, was read.
. It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that
the communication be referred to the Police Department. Motion
carried.
Communication from Mrs. Clara Lawson~ for permit to
operatA restaurant at 3335 East Slauson Avenue, formerly
occupied by Clark Westfall~ was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta~ that the
same be referred to the Police Department. Motion carried.
Communication from A. Perkins, for permit to install
and operate restaurant at 1936 E. Vernon Avenue, was read.

same be referred to the Police Department. Motion carried.
Communication f!om Wa.gner Sales & Service Inc.~ for
permit to operate a sales and service business of oil field
equipment at 2371 East 51st Street~ was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Levy~ that the
communication be filed and permit granted. Motion carried.
Commu1licatlon from Royal Manufacturing Co., for
permit to conduct manufacturing business of cotton dresses
at 4368 District Blvd., was read.

'Connnunicationsfrom Royal ManufactUring Co., Vernon
Paving Co., Owens-Illinois Pacific Coast Co., and L. A.
Rubber & Asbestos Co., for permits to haul refuse from their
premises upon and along the streets of the city of Vernon,
were read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that the
connnunications be filed and permits granted. Motion carried.
Communication from P. J. Walker Co., builders, for
permit to haul refuse from Owens-Illinois Pacific Coast Co.,
was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Levy, that the
communication be filed and permit granted. Motion carried.
:Minutes of the reetings of the Water & Power Committee
of September 22, September 29, and October 6, 1936, were read.
It was moved by DUrbin, seconded by Levy, that the
same be filed. Motion carried.
Report of the Police Department was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that the
same be filed. Motion carried.
Auditor's report of Haskins & Sells was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Levy, that the same
be filed and referred to the Finance Committee. Motion carried.
At thistlmetheCityClerk announeed that in his
opinion the tel'm1:bes were damaging the City Hall property, and
that same was in need of repair.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin, that the
Ci ty Clerk secure bids from different firms and submit same to
the City Council for the repair to City of Hall of damage done
by termites. Motion carried.

Company be permitted to attach lines to the City poles until a
joint pole agreement can be worked out between the company and
the city, was read.
,It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that
the recommendation of the Chief Electrical Engineer be con-
curred in. Motion carried.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta, that
all bids for work to be done for or merchandise to be fur-
nished to the City be given as much publicity as possible.
Motion carried.
The following applications, having the approval of
the City Engineer, were read:
Application 4982: Independent Foundry Supply Co., for permit
to construct driveway at.2325 East 38th Street.
Application 4983: of Wm. Nies, for permit to make sewer
connection at 2001 E. 57th Street.

sewer at 4865 Pacific Blvd.
Application 4985: of Baker Oil Tool Co., for permit to
connect to sewer at 6000 S. Boyle Avenue.
Application 4993: of Southern California Gas Co., for permit
to lay 6' 4" gas main at 26th Street and Jaboner~a Road.
Application 4994: of Southern California Ga.s Co., for permit
to lay 1942' or 4" gas main on East 26th Street, east of
Jaboneria Road.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Levy, that the
applications be filed and permits granted. Motion carried.
