MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE
CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERNON,
HELD TUESDAY , DBJEMBER 15, 1936, AT
THREE 0' CLOCK P. M., AT THE CITY HALL

The meeting was called to order by the Mayor, J. J.
Councilmen present: Furlong, Leonis, Durbin, Levy,
Peralta
Councilmen absent: None

It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta, that
the :reading of the Miriutesof the previous meeting be dis-
pensed with. Motion carried.
A communication from the City Engineer, recommending
that alternate bid of Chicago Bridge & Iron Company be ac-
cepted for fUrnishing of 25,000 baPrel steel tank, at the
price named in its bid, to-wit, $13,090.00~ was read.
It was moved by Leonis, .' seconded by Levy, t hat all
bids for the furnishing of the 25,000 barrel steel tank be
rejected except the bidef the Chicago Brigge &: Iron Company,
and that it be awarded the contract as recommended by the
City Engineer. Motion carried.
Communication from H. A.Thalimer, City Engineer,
requesting authority to establish grade in Magnolia Avenue,
was read.
, It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Levy, that the
City Engineer be instructed to establish grade in Magnolia
Avenue. Motion carried.
Communication from the'City Engineer, recommending
that the salary of K. E. Wattson, Superintendent on W P A work
be increased to $225.00 per month, was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Levy, that the
communication be filed and the recommendation of the City
Engineer concurred in. Motion carried. .
eommunication from the City, Erigineer, stating that
the Works Progress Administration is ready to s tart work on
Downey Road storm drain was rea.d - cost to the City to be
$23,102.00, and tha.t this amount may be reduced if certain
agreements could be entered into with the Union Pacific
Railway.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Beralta, that
this mat~er be referred to the Water & Power Committee, and
that when this meeting adjourns, it adjourn to meet December
22, 1936. Motion carried.
Resolution of the Board of Supervisors appropriating
$325.00 for drainage of grade separation at 'Washington Blvd.
and Union Pacific Railroad tracks, was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin, t bat the
same be filed. Motion carried.
COmmunication from American District Telegraph Co.,
requesting pennission to make cross arm attachments to City
of Vernon poles, was read.

It was moved by Leonis,seconded by Levy; that the
same be referred to the Legal Department of the City. Motion
carried.
Communication from Great Western Live Stock Show,
requesting permission to hold Eleventh Annual stock show
and rodea, was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by"Peralta, that
the communication be filed and permit granted. Motion carried.
Communication from Great'lJlTestern Live Stock Show,
requesting permission to place direction signs at various
points throughout the city, indicating route to stock show,
was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that
the communication be filed and permit granted. Motion oarried.
COl'mnunioation from R. A.Phillips, requesting per-
mission to hang signs across Downey Road and Leonis and Ex-
ohange Avenue, to direct public to rodeo at Union Stook Yards,
was read.
It was moved by Dtri:>bin, seconded by"Peralta, that
the communication be filed and,pe~it granted. Motion car~ied.
Communication from H. W. Hull, requesting permit to
operate wood turning shop at 5607 Santa Fe Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by'Peralta, that
the communication be filed and permit granted. Motion carried.
Communication from Henry Asphalt Co., requesting
permit to manufacture asphalt roof coverings at 3463 East 26th
Street, was read.
It was moved by Dtri:>bin, seconded by Peralta, that the
same be referred to the Fire Department. Motion carried.
Communication from H. L.'Fishbeck Estate, requesting
permission to wreck dwelling at &446 Santa Fe Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that '
the communication be filed and request granted. Mc:>tion carried.
Report of the Police Department was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that the
same be filed. Motion carried.
'Minutes of the meetIngs of" December 8"and December 15,
1936, of the Water & Power Committee, were read.
It Was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta, that the
same be filed. Motion carried.
. Recommendation of W. N. Johnson, Chief Electrical
Engineer, that the salary of Bruce Rule, Meter'Test Engineer,
be increased from"$170.00 to $200.00 per month, beginning
December 15, 1936, was read.
It wasmoveG. by Durbin, seconded by Peralta., that
the recoIl1ll1endation be ~oncurred 'in and that' the salary of Brllce
Rule, Meter Test Engineer, be increased from $170.00 to'$200.00
per month, beginning December ~5, 1936. Motion carried.

RESOLUTION NO. 833, a resolution approving Speci-
fications No. 100 for the dl'illing of a water well, was read.
It was moved by Leonis, , seconded by Levy, that
RESOLUTION NO. 833 be adopted. Motion carried.
RESOLUTION NO. 834, a resolution fixing the per diem
wages to be paid for work under Specifications 100, was read.
It wasrnoved by Leonis, seconded by Levy, that
RESOLUTION NO. 83~ be adopted. Motion carried.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Levy, that the
Clerk be instructed to advertise for bids for work 'to be
done under Specifications No. 100. Motion carried.
RESOLUTION NO. 835, approving Specifications No. 101
and Plans Nos. 309 and 432, for the construction of a pump
house and appurtenances, was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seoonded by Levy, that
RESOLUTION NO. 835 be adopted. Motion carried.
RESOLUTION NO.836, fixing the per diem wages to
be paid for work under Specifications No. 101, was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Levy, that
RESOLUTION NO. 836 be adopted. Motion ca,rried.
It was moved by Leonis" seconded by Levy, that the
Clerk be instructed to advertise for bids for work' to be
done under Specifications No. 101. Motion carried.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta, that
the City Engineer give grades to the P16neer-Flintkote Co.,
so that they may connect to the storm drain. Motion carried.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that the .
Clerk advertise for bids for the improvement of Vernon Avenue.
Motion carried.
Request of Levy Bros. Box Company, for permission
to haul refuse from its premises uponaild along the public
streets of the City of Vernon, was read.
It was m6vedby Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that
the request be filed and permission granted. Motion carried.
The following applications, all having the approval
of the City Engineer, were read:

driveway on 55th Street, 618 feet east of Alameda Street.
Application 5068: of Globe Grain & Milling Co., for per.mit
to connect to sewer at 51st and Alameda Streets.
It was moved by Ulrbin, seconded by Levy, that the
applications be filed and per.mits granted. Motion carried.
ORDINANCE NO. 499 ,an Ordinance amending Ordinance
No. 451 was read for first reading.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by peralta, that
ORDINANCE NO. 499 be passed for first reading. Motion carried.
Demands on the General Fund in the sum of $39,573.30,
were read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Levy, that the
demands be allowed and warrants drawn for the same. Motion
carried.
It was moved by Leonis,secoIlded by Levy, that this
meeting adjourn to Decamber 22, 1936, at 3:00 o'clock P. M.
