CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY - OF VERNON,
HELD TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 1937, AT

The 'meeting was called to order by the Mayor,
J. J. Furlong.
Councilmen present: Furlong, Durbin, Peralta, Levy
Councilmen absent: Leonis
It was. moved by DUrbin, seconded by Peralta, that
the reading of the Minutes of the previous meeting be dispensed
with. Motion carried.
Estimate. submitted by . tbeActlng Oi ty Engineer re-
garding necessary chariges in water distribution system in
connection with pavernentwork in Vernon Avenue between Santa
Fe Avenue EU'ld Alameda Street, said estimate far labor and
materials being $227.00, was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that the
estimate be filed with the City Clerk, and the engineer in':'
structed to do the work set forth therein. Motion carried.
Communication from the Acting City Engineer, regard-
ing certain survey records missing from the e~neer's office,
was read.

It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that said
matter be referred to the City Attorney and the engineer in ail
endeavor to secure said records from the former city engineer.
Motion carried.
- Co:mmtinication from Francis Bates, Acting City
Engineer, advisirigthat he has eIllployed C. D. Albee, at the
rateof $180.00 per month, as office engineer, was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta, that the
communication be filed and the action of the Acting City
Engineer be approved, and that C. D. Albee be emplo'je d by
the city at $180.00 per month, as office engineer, 'until further
order of the City Council. Motion carried.

ing an appropriation of not to Elxceedljji200.00 to "f."bllsh certain
un1'inished work' on the Vernon Avenue and. 37th Street storm
drain, was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Dur,biil, that the
communication be filed and the appropriation of $200.00 be made
from the General FUnd, to complete the Vernon Avenue and 37th
Street storm drain. Motion carried.
Recommendation of Acting City Engineer that bid of
Peerless Pump Company 1'01' erecting and fUrnishing deep well
pump be accepted, was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that the

aIld that all 'bids bel' ejected except the bid of Beerless
Pump Company; tha. tit be a warded the c ont rac t # and that the
Clerk be instrUcted to return checks to unsuccessfUl bidders.

Communication fram General Machinery Corporation
was read.
It was moved by DuJ:tbin, seconded by Levy, that the
same be referred to the Water & Power Committee. Motion carried.
Communication from E. McCurdy was read.
It was moved by Itirbin,seconded by Peralta, tha.t' the
same be referred to the City Engineer and the City Attorney.
Motion carried.
Commumcation from the County-of Los Angeles Road
Department, advising the city that at the present time it is
impossible to rntike an appropria.tion of funds as requested
by the City tbrb1,lgh the ci ty engineer, on December 16, 1936,
was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that the
same be filed. Motion carried. .
Communication from L. A. Paving Company, regarding
boulevard stop signs at 37th and Soto streets, was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by' Peralta# that
the same be referred to the Police Department. Mo~ion carried.
Communication from Herberts Machinery Co., request-
ing pennission to put up street decora ttons in front of its
building at 2929 Santa Fe Avenue from February 1st to 14th#
to advertise machinery and tool demonstration, was read.
It was moved by Durbin, secoilded by'Peral.ta, that
the same be referred to the Pollce Department. Motion carried.
Report of Southern'California Gas CC>l11.pa:ny on Los
Angeles County Franchise 463# to which was attached check in
the sum of $5.25, was read.
It was moved by turbin, secon:led by Peralta# that
the same be referred to the Water & Power Committee. Motion
carried.
Circular letter from League of California Municipalities,
regarding "In Lieu" tax on automobiles, was read.
It was moved by Durbin, secoIlded by Peral. ta,. that the
same be filed. Motion carried.
Communication from steve BroWn, Needles, California,
reqUesting price of one Olympic house which he wished to pur-
chase# was rea.d.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that the
communication be filed and the Clerk inStructed to notify Mr.
Brown that the City has no houses for sale. Motion carried.
Communication from Geo. F. Cla.rke# representative
of Diesel engine class of Frank Wiggins Trade School, request--
ing permission to take class through the power plant# was read.

requesting pennit to install fuel oil tank at 4371 East 49th
Street, was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta, that the
communication be filed and pennit granted. Mo~ion carried.
CammunicationfromVernon Brewing Co., requesting
consideration on the application of'M. Vasquez to operate
restaurant at 2022 East 38th street, was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by' Peralta, that
the same be referred to the Police Department. Motion carried.

sion to haul refuse upon and along the public streets of the

Minutes of' the meetings of the Water &: Power Committee
of February 2, 1937, were read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, t hat the
same be filed. Motion carried.
The following applications, all having the approval
of the Acting City Engineer, were read:
Application 5131: of' Griffith Company, requesting per.mit to
construct~sidewalk on Soto Street, north of Sears Street.
Application 5132: . of Los Angeles Gas & Electrie Corporation,
requesting pennit to prospect and relocate serVices on south
side of Vernon Avenue due to widening and improvement of' Vernon
Avenue.
Application 5133: of Southern California Edison Company, re';'
questing pennit to reset pole and anchor on East 25th S~reet.
A:pplication 5134: of OWens, Illinois, Pacific Coast 60., for
permit to connect to' sewer at the northeast cor.ner of' Fruitland
Road and Soto Street.
Application 5135: of Globe Grain &: Milling Co., requesting
permit to make repairs to sewer at 2124 East 51st Street.
ApJ<lication 5136: of' Southern California Telephone Co., re-
questing permit to place pole and anchor on east side of Downey
Road, 50th Street south of Leonis Blvd.

applications be filed and permits granted. Motion, carried.

It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that the
same be filed. Motion carried.

Communication from' ActIng CIty Engineer, regarding
bid of Fairbanks, Morse & Co., was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that
the same be referred to an adjourned meeting to be held"
February 9, 1937, at 2:30 o'clock P. M. Motion carried.
Communication from the Chief Electrical Engineer,
recommending the return of $36.60 to the Herberts Machinery
Co., charged in error for e1ectricity, was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta, that
the communication be filed and the reco~ndation be concurred
in. Motion carried.
Communication from Vernon Industrial Development
Association, together with communication from Southern.Cali-
fornia Edison Company in reference to its f'ranchise, a.nd
copy of contract for the leasing 01' the power ~nt bw the
City to the. Southern California Edison Company, ng3 petitions
requesting the City to lease its power plant and distributing
system to Southern California Ecison Company signed by "A"
Brass Foundry and 350 other firms having their places of
business in the City of Vernon, were read.
It was moyed by Levy, seco~ded by-Durbin, that the
same be referred to the City Engineer and E. R. Young, special
counsel, far report. Motion carried.
RESOLUTION NO. 839~ a resolution approving map
of Tract No. 11254, was read. .
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by UJVY, that
RESOLUTION NO. 839 be adopted. Motion carried.
. Communication from Spengler Aircraft Parts Co., re-
questing pennit to conduct business at 4439 Santa Fe Avenue,
was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by'Peralta, that
the communication be filed and perIni t granted. Motion carried.
Demands on the General Fund in the sum of $19,858.54,
were 'read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Durbin, that the
demands be allowed and warrants drawn. Motion carried.
