MINUTES OF AN ADJOURNED RSGULAR MEETING
OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERNON,
HELD TUESDAY, APRIL 13, 1937, AT THREE
O'CLOCK P. M., AT THE CITY HALL OF THE
CITY OF VERNON, 4305 SANTA FE AVENUE,
VERNON, CALIFORNIA

The meeting was called to order by the Mayor, J. J.
Councilmen present:

Furlong, Leonis, Durbin
Levy, Peralta
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Leonis, that the
reading of the Minutes of the previous meeting be dispensed
with. Motion carried.
At this time the City Council proceeded to canvass
the results of the election of April 12, 1937.
After ascertaining the number of votes east for
and against each proposition, Councilman Durbin introduced
RESOLUTION NO. 853, and moved its adoption, which was seconded
by Councilman Leonis, and carried.
Councilman Durbin introduced RESOLUTION NO. 854, and
moved its adoption, which was seconded by Councilman Leonis,
and carried.
Report or Acting City Engineer on bids for the fur-
nishing of centrifugal ptimp'with electric motor driven unit
and appurtenances, was read. The Acting City Engineer recom-
mended the bid of Fairbanks, Morse & Co. as the lowest and
best bid.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin, that the
report of the Acting City Engineer be concurred in and that -.
all bids be rejected except the bid of Fairbanks, Morse & Co.,
~d that it be awarded the contract; that all checks be re-
turned to unsuccessful bidders. Motion carried.
Communication from Glass Containers, Inc., cancelling
arrangements with Howard McCurdy to represent them in the
power plant matter, was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin, that
the communication be filed. Motion carried.
Communication from Gilmore Oil Company, requesting
permit to haul refuse from their premises upon' and along the
publiC streets of the City of Vernon, was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Leonis, that
the communication be filed and permit granted. Motion carried.
Communication from Southwestern Engineering Co., r e-
questing non-parking zone near 4800 Santa Fe Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Leonis, t hat the
matter be referred to the Police Department. Motion carried.
Application 5259: of Southern California Telephone Co., re-
questing permit to place six poles and two anchors on west
side of Magnolia Avenue, between Slauson Avenue and Randolph

Street, was read; said application being approved by Acting
City Engineer and Chief Electrical Engineer.
) It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Leonis, that
the application be filed and permit granted. Motion carried.
Al'plication5260: of Union Pacific Railroad Company, request-
ing permi t to construct a catch basin and 15" lateral from the
west' curb line to Los Angeles City Storm Drain, . across Downey
Road,'approximately 430 feet north of north line of Bandini
Blvd., was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin, that the
application be filed and permit granted. Motion carried.
At this time the City.Attorney reported' that he had
an interview with the Deputy City Attorney David, in reference
to the Los Angeles sewer going through Vernon, and that the
Deputy City Attorney threatened to sue the City within ten
days. The City Attorney requested the City Council to employ
E. R. Young to assist him in the matter.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin, that ' the
repo:r-tofthe City Attorney be filed and that he 8.tldE~R. Young be
instructed to represent the City of Vernon in all legal matters
pertaining to the sewer situation. Motion carried.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin, that the
office of City Engineer be declared vacant as of April 15, 1937.
Motion carried.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Leonis, that the
Acting City Engineer, Francis Bates, be appointed City Engineer
of the City of , Vernon beginning April 15, 1937, to Serve at the
pleasure of the City Council, at a salary of $350.00 per month.
Motion carried.
