MINUTES CF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE
CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERNON,
HELD TUESDAY, APRIL 20, 1937, AT
THREE 0' CLOCK P. M., AT THE CITY HALL
OF THE CITY OF VERNON, 4305 SANTA FE
AVENUE, VERNON, CALIFORNIA.

The meeting was oa11ed to order by the Mayor, J. J.
Councilmen present: Furlong, Durbin, Levy, Peralta
Councilmen absent: Leonis
It was moved by Levy, seoonded by Peralta, that the
reading of the Minutes of the previous meeting be dispensed
with. Motion carried.
At this time the City Clerk announced that he had on
his desk a bid pursuant to notice inviting sealed bids for the
purchase'of certain land to be used as a refuse dump site for
the city.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that
the Clerk open bid. Motion carried.
At,this time the Clerk opened and read a bid from
Dominic Meaglia, Katie Meaglia, Sam Meaglia and Domenica Meaglia.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that the
bid of Dominic Meaglia, Katie Meaglia, Sam Meaglia and Domenica
Meaglia be accepted and that the City purchase the property at
the price named in the bid, subject to the checking of de-
scription and easements of record by the City Engineer. Motion
carried.
Communication from the City Engineer, stating that he
had employed Frank Euston as construction Clerk for Downey Road
Storm Drain Project at a compensation of $100.00 per month, and
requesting approval of the City Council,was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Durbin, that the
communication be filed and the action of the City Engineer be
approved. Motion carried.
Communication from the Citr Engineer, recommending C
salary increase of S. D. Albee from ~180.00 per month to $200.00
per month, beginning May 1, 1937, was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Durbin, that the com-
munication be filed and the recommendation of the City Engineer
be concurred in, and that the salary ofS. D. Albee shall be
$200.00 per"month beginning May 1, 1937, until fUrther order of
the Council. Motion carried.
Report from the City Engineer on condition of City's
Well No. 1 was read.
It was moved by~Durbin, seconded by Levy, that the same
be filed. Motion oarried.
Communication from the City Engineer regarding certain
conditions in Magnolia Avenue Improyement, and requesting appropria-
tion of $250.00 to proceed with certain work, was read.

It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that the
communication be filed and request concurred in, subject to
the approval of the City Attorney as to the legality. Motion
oarried.
Communioation from the Owens Park Lumber Company,
"re.gard.ing certain conditions in connection with the storm
drain at 38th and Ross Streets, was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Durbin, that the
same be referred to the City Engineer for report. Motion
carried.
Communication from the Gilmore Ot1 Company, regarding
permit to house a lion on their premises at 28th and Santa Fe
Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Durbin, that the
communication be filed. Motion carried.
Communication from H. McCurdy, in which he stated that
he has no City field books in his possession, was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that the
same be filed. Motion carried.
Communication from Rushton Brush Manufacturing Co.,
requesting permission to rent the old City Hall Building for
manufacturing purposes, was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded"by Peralta, that the
same be referred to the Finance Committee. Motion carried.
Communication from Mrs. J. M. tara, requesting a per-
mit to operate and conduct a grocery store at 2325 East 37th
Street, was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that the
communication be filed and permit granted. Motion carried.
Communication from F. M.Everett, requesting permit ~nd
license to conduct business of maintenance and sales at 5741 .
First Street, to be known as Los Angeles Sales and Service Co.,
was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta, that the
communication be filed and the permit granted. Motion carried.
Communication from the following firms, requesting
permits to haul refuse upon and along the public streets of the
City of Vernon, were read:
Universal Brass Manufacturing Co.
Christensen Plating Works
Growers Cold Storage Co.
Plant Rubber & Asbestos Co.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that the
communications be filed and permits granted. Motion carried.
Minutes of the Committee on Water & Power of meetings
of April 13th and 20th, 1937, were read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Levy, that the
same be filed. Motion carried.

Report of the Police Department was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that
the same be filed. Motion carried.
Application 5274: . of Southern California Telephone Co., for
permi t to place 4 feet of 3" iron pipe on the south s~de of
Slauson Avenue 68 feet west of Downey Road, 'approved by the
City Engineer and Chief Electrical Engineer, was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that
the application be filed and the permit granted. Motion
carried.
R RESOtU~ION NO. 855, a resolution declaring the pre-
vailing rate of wages in connection with the painting of the
25,000 barrel water tank, was read.
It was moved by LevY, seconded by Peralta, that
RESOLUTION NO. 855 be adopted. Motion carried.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta, that the
Clerk be instructed to advertise for bids for the painting of
the 25,000 barrel water tank for the city. Motion carried.
Communication from the Chief Electrical Engineer,
regar<iing application of Western Union Telegraph Company,
requesting permission to attach lines to Vernon pOWer poles,
was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Durbin, that the
application be filed and permit granted. Motion carried.
Communication from the Chief Electrical Engineer,
requesting permission for the Moloney E1ectricCampany to
place on consignment in the City's warehouse certain trans-
formers described in said communication, was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Durbin, that the .
communication be filed and permission granted. Motion carried.
Communication from the Chief Electrical Engineer, re-
garding the resignation of Bruce Rule, meter test engineer,
and recommending that the resignation be accepted at the end of
a two weeks vacation, was read.
It was moved by Le\7, seconded by Peralta, that the
communication be filed and the r ecoriunendation of the Chief
Electrical Engineer be concurred in. Motion carried.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that the
Clerk be instructed to advertise for certain steel bars, as
set forth in the request of the City Engineer. Motion carried.
Demands on the general fund in the sum of $32,489.17,
were read. .
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that the
demands be allowed and warrants drawn for the same. Motion oarried.
