The meeting was called to order by the Mayor,
J. J. Furlong.
Councilmen present: Furlong, Leonis, Durbin,
Peralta
Councilmen absent: Levy
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that
the reading of the Minutes of the previous meeting be dis-
pensed with. Motion carried.
At this time the City Clerk announced that he had
on his desk bids for the drilling of a water well, pursuant
to notice inviting sealed proposals, heretofore authorized
by the City Council.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin, that
the Clerk open and declare the bids. Motion carried.
The City Clerk opened bids for the drilling of a
water well for the City from the following firms:
Roscoe Moss Company
Saunders Brothers
Barber & Bridge Drilling Corp. Ltd.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin, that the
same be referred to the City Engineer for checking and report.
Motion carried.
Report of the City Engineer on bids for fencing
the City's pumping plant on East Vernon Avenue, recommending
that the,bid of Anchor Post Fence Company be accepted at the
price named in its bid, to-wit, $1114..0.0, was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin, that
the report be received and that all bids be rejected for
the turnishing and erecting of said fence except the bid of
Anchor Post Fence Company; that it be awarded the contract;
that the City Attorney draw the contract, and that the
cheeks of unsuccesst'ul bidders be returned. Motion carried.
Report of the City Engineer and Chief Electrical
Engineer on bids for the eleetric switchboard to be in-
stalled at the City's pumping plant No.2, recommending
that W. A. Benjamin,Electric Company be awarded said con-
tract at the price named in its bid, to-wit, $926.346 was
read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin6 that
all bids for the furnishing of the electric switch board
to be installed in Pumping Plant No. 2 be rejected except
the bid of W. A. Benjamin Electric Company, and that it be

awarded the contract; that the City Attorney be instructed
to draw the contract. covering the same, and that checks of
unsuccessful bidders be returned to them. Motion carried.
Report of the City Engineer on the communication
from Swift & Company regarding the condition of Jewel Avenue
due to storm drain installation, was read. He recomme;tded
that the City Council appropriate the sum of $200.00 to put
the street 1n good condition.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin, that
the report be filed and the recommendation concurred in. '
Motion carried.
Request of City Council.ma1n Levy for leave of absence
from the city for five weeks was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that
the request be filed and permission granted. Motion carried.
Communication from the Department of Water & Power
of the City of Los Angeles, requesting permission to shoot
pigeons that gather on high voltage wires, was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that
the same be referred to the Committee of the Whole. Motion
carried.
Communication from Vernon Paving Company, requesting
extension of thirty days for the completion of street work
on Vernon Avenue between Santa Fe Avenue and Alameda Street,
was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta, that the
communication be filed and the extension requested be granted.
Motion carried.
Communication from Technical Glass Company, Inc., ad-
vising that they are paying March and April power bills under
protest in connection with survey made by Conaway-Cooper Company,
was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Durbin, that the
communication be filed. Motion carried.

ommunication from the Union Packing Company, request-
ing permission to prohibit parking wit~ 30 feet north and ~O
feet south of entrance to cattle unloading driveway on Soto
Street, was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Durbin, that the
communication be referred to the Police Department. Motion
carried.
Communication from Imperial Pipe & Supply Co., request-
ing permit to haul refuse 1frpom their premises upon and along the
public streets of the City of Vernon, was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that the
communication be filed and per.mit granted. Motion carried.
At this time the City Engineer reported that Barber &
Bridge Drilling Corp. Ltd. was the lowest and best bidder for

for the drilling of City's water well, and recommended that
it be awarded the contract.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that
the report be received and filed and the recommendation con-
curred in; that all bids for the drilling of the well be re-
jected except the bid of Barber & Bridge Drilling Corp. Ltd;
that it be awarded the contract; and that the City Attorney
be inst:ructed to draw the contract; that the checks of all
unsuccessful bidders be returned. Motion carried.
At this time Councilman Leonis Introduced RESOLUTION
NO. 870, a.. resolution re-instating Carl Heinze as consulting electrical
engineer at a salary of $500.00 per month, beginning June 1,
1937, until the further order of the City Council, and recommended
its adoption, which was seconded by Councilman Durbin, and carried.
Minutes of the Committee on Water & Power meetings
of May 25 and June 1, 1937, were read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that
the same be filed. Motion carried.
~lication 5348: of Southern California Telephone Co., for per-
JiiIt" to raise manhole on the south side of Vernon Avenue at
Hawthorne Street, was read. The City Engineer reper ts that
application should be denied as manhole is to grade.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin, that
Application 5348 be denied. Motion carried.
Report of the Police Department was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta, that the
same be filed. Motion carried.
Acceptance of franchise by Southern California Edison
Company Ltd. under Ordinance No. 503, was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that the
same be filed. Motion carried.
Acceptance of franchise by Southern California Edison
Company Ltd. under Ordinance No. 504 was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralta, that the
same be filed. Motion carried.

of the City Engineer, were read:
Application 5339: 01' Southern California Edison Co., for permit
to set electrical power transmission line poles on Soto Street,
between Leonis Blvd. and Fruitland Road.
Application 5340: of Southern California Telephone Co., for
permit to place one pole and anchor on west side of Soto Street
30 feet north of alley north of 57th Street.
Application 5341: of Southern California Telephone Co., for
permit to place 92 feet of underground conduit on north side of
38th Street, east of Alameda Street.
Application 5342: of Southern California Telephone Co., for
permIt to place two poles on east side of 1st Street 133 feet
and 250 feet north of Santa Fe Railroad right of way.

APplication 5852: of Owens-Illinois-Pacific Coast Co., for per-
mIt to connection to dewer at Fruitland Road and Soto Streets.
Application 5353: of Standard Steel Works, for permit to con-
nect to sewer at 5001 South Boyle Avenue.
Application 5354: of Southern California Gas Co., for permit
to install gas service at 2309 East 38th Street.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Durbin, that the
applications be filed and permits granted. Motion carried.
Demands in the swm of $12,653.52 were read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta, that the
demands be. allowed and warrants drawn for the same. Motion
carried.
