MINUTES OF A REGULA.R MEETING OF THE
CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERNON
HELD TUESDAY, JULY 20,. 1937, AT THfmE
O'CLOCK P.M., AT THE CITY HALL OF
THE CITY OF VERNON, 4305 SANTA FE
AVENUE, VERNON, CALIFORNIA.

The meeting was called to order by the Mayor, J. J.
Councilmen present: Furlong, Leonis,Durbin, Levy,
'Peralta.
Councilmen absent: None.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, that the
reading o~ the Minutes of the previous meeting. be dispensed
with. Motion carried.
At this time the City Clerk announced that he had
several bids on his desk, pursuant to a notice inyiting sealed
proposal~ for the furnishing to the City o~ one fire truck.
It was moved by Durbin and seconded by Levy that the
Clerk open and read the bids. Motion carried.

Sterling Motors Corporation; .
General Motors Truck and Coach Company;
International Harvester Company.
It was moved by Durbin and seconded by Levy that all
bids should be referred to the fire chief for checking and re-
port. Motion carried.
The fire chief then checked the bids and recommended
that all bids be rejec.ted except the bid of the Sterling Motors
Corporation, and that they be awarded the contract.
It was moved by Durbin and seconded by Levy that the
recommendation of the fire chief be accepted, and. all bids be
rejected except the bid of the Sterling Motors Corporation, and
that they be awarded the contract, all unsuccessful bidders'
checks to be returned. Motion carried.
Communication from the City Engin,eel'in referenc'e to
the approval of proposed Tract Map No. -11349, was read.
It was moved by Levy and seconded by Durbin that.. the
communication be re-referred to the City Engineer. Motion carried..-
Communication from the City Engineer requesting the
authorization of the employment of an inspector to render a re~
port on work conpleted by Walter Ferem Company, the contractors
painting the steel water tank at pumping plant No.2.
It was moved by Levy and seconded by Durbin that the
communication be filed and the request granted.. Motion carried.
Communication from the City Engineer in reference to
the well drilling operations of Saunders Bros. on well No.5,
was read.
It was moved by Durbin and secondea by Peralta that the
matter be referred to the City Attorney.. Motion Carried.
Communication from Joseph Artale, Fire Chief,
regarding Assembly Bill, No. 2505, was read.
It was moved by Durbin and seconded by Peralta
that same be referred to the Fire Committee. Motion carried.
A petition was submitted by the Union Pacific
Railroad Company, requesting the vacation of a portion of
Bickett street.
It was moved by Durbin and seconded by Peralta
that same be referred to the City Attorney, with instructions
to start proceedings therein. Motion carried.
A report of' the Union Oil Company on Los Angeles
County Franchise No. 596 N.S. was read.
It was moved by Durbin and seconded by Peralta
that same.be filed. Motion carried.
Communication from the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Corp.,
requesting permission to take moving pictures in front of the
Power Plant, was read.
It was moved by Durbin and seconded by Levy
that permission be granted to .Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Corp., to
take moving pictures in front of the Power Plant. Motion carried.
Communication from W. J. Tannahil & Son, requesting
a permit to conduct and operate a general automotive business at
Ross and 38th. streets, was read.
It was moved by Durbin,. and seconded by Levy that
the communication be filed and the permit be granted. Motion
carried.
Communication from L. I. Tuttle, requesting a per~t
mit to operate a welding shop at 5125 Santa Fe Avenue, was reid.
It was moved by Durbin and seconded by Peralta
that communication be filed, and permit granted. Motion oarried.
Communication from Ivan G. Bartram, :requesting a
permit to operate a restuarant at 2100 E. Vernon Avenue, was read

Communication from Pacifid OUtdoor Advertising Co.,
requesting permission to erect two advertising structures at
48th. and Alameda streets, was read.
Communication from C. Bors Isdahl, requesting
permission to place iron rails in front of his fence at
5ill Boyle Avenue, to prevent the fence from being damaged by
parked cars, was read.
It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Levy that
same be referred to the Police Department. Motion carried.
CommUnication from Mrs. Edith Irvin offering to
purchase old post office equipment for $25.00, was :read. .
It was moved by Durbin and seconded by Peralta
th.t the communication be filed and the offer be accepted.
Motion carried.

Communication from the Gilmore Oil Company
regarding parking conditions on E. 27th. Streetl between
Santa Fe Avenue and Violet Alley, was read.
It was moved by Levy and seconded by Durbin that
smme be reported to the Police Department. Motion carried.
Communications from the York Ice Machinery Co. I
and the Globe Ice Machine Co., for permission to haul refuse
upon and along the public streets of the City of Vernonl were
read.
It was moved by Durbin and seconded by Peralta
that the communications be filed, and the permits be granted.
Motion carried.
At this t~e the consulting Electrical Engineer,
Ca~l Heinz, reported that he had employed Ernest Probert,
.Electrical Engineer, to take inventory, at a salary of $200.00
'peI'::month, effec~ive July 12th., until further word from the
City Council.
It was moved by Durbin and seconded by Peralta
that the action of the Chief Electrical Engineer be approved
and Ernest Probert be employed to take inventory in the elect-
rical department at a salary of $200.00 per month, beginning
July 12, 1937, and continuing until further order of the
Board. Motion carried.

minutes be approved as read. Motion carried.
