MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE
CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERNON,
HELD TUESDAY, AUGUST 3rd, 1937, AT
THREE O'CLOCK P.M., AT THE CITY HALL
OF THE CITY OF VERNON, 4305 SANTA FE
AVENUE, VERNON, CALIFORNIA.
The meeting was called to order by the Mayor, J. J.
Furlong.
Councilmen present: Furlong, Leonis, Durbin, Levy,
Peralta.
Councilmen"" absent: None.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy, thatt the
reading o~ the Minutes of the previous meeting be dispensed
with. Motion carried.
At this time the City Clerk announced that he had upon
his desk bid~ for the construction of pumping plant No.2, filed
with him pursuant to Notice Inviting Sealed Proposals,pr Bids.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Levy that the Clerk
open and read the bids. Motion carried.
At this time the City Clerk opened and read. bids from
the following firms:
Richards-Neustadt Construction Company;
The Construction Engineer Co.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Leonis that all bids
be referred to'the Engineer for checking and report. Motion carried.

The City Engineer presented to the City Council a map of
Track No. 11349, and recommended it for approval.
Councilman Leonis introduced a Resolution, No. 878,
a resolution approving Tract No. 11349, and moved its adoption,
seconded by Levy. Motion carried.
Communication from the City Engineer, recommending
the acceptance by the Council of a fence constructed by the
Anchor Post Fence Co., at pumping plant No.2.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Levy that the re-
commendation be filed, and the fence referred to in the recom-
mendation be, and the same is hereby accepted and approved.
Motion carried.
Report of the General Petroleum Corporation on Los
Angeles County Franchise No. 781 N.S., was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralto that same
be filed. Motion carried. .
Report of the Southern California Gas Company on Los
Angeles County Franchise No. 467, wa~ read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralto that same
be filed. Motion carried.

Communication from Saunders Bros., regarding the
communication of July 15, 1937, was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Peralto that same
be referred to the City Engineer, and the City Attorney. Motion
carried.
Communication from J. A. McNaughton, requesting per-
mission to install old time slot machines in cocktail room at Stock
Yards Inn, was read.
It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Durbin that same
be referred to the City Attorney. Motion carried.
Copy of resolution adopted by Board of Supervisors re-
garding destitute transients was read.

Communication from the Petroleum Equipment Company, re-
garding parking conditions in vicinity of 2800 S. Alameda Street
was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralto that same
be referred to the Vernon Industrial Development Association for
a report. Motion carried.
Communication from Swift & Company requesting that
Jack Beaumont be deputi~ed to carry firearms.
It was moved by Durbin, s~conded by, Peralto that the
communication be filed, request granted, subject to the approval
of the police department. Motion carried.
Communication from Evan Evans, requesting permit to
purchase scrap iron within the city, was read.
It was moved by Peralto, seconded by Durbin that the
communication be filed and taken under advisement. Motio~ carried.
Communication from Farrar Industrial Products Co., re~
questing permission to store peach pits on property north of
46th. Street, and West of Soto Street, was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy that the
communication be filed, and permit be granted. Motion carried.
.' Communication Irom Farrar Industrial Products Co, re-
questing that a permit ~e issued to William Pratty Co. to haul
and unload peach pits on property north of 46th. Street, and west
of Soto Street, was read.
It was moved by Durbin, seconded by Levy that the
communication be filed, and permit granted. Motion carried.
Communication from the General Electric Company, request-
ing permit to haul refuse from premises of 5201 Santa Fe Avenue
was read. .
It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Levy that the
communication be filed, and permit granted. Motion carried.

Communication from Minneapolis Steel Construction
Co., requesting a permit to haul refuse from pre~ses of 4340
District Blvd., was read.
It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Levy that the
communication be filed, and permit granted. MOtion carried.
Communication from Los Angeles Sales and Service Co.,
requesting permit to haul refuse from premises of 5741 S. First
Street, was read.
It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Levy that this
communication be filed, and permit gzoanted. Mat ion Carried.
Communication from the City Consulting Electrical
Engineer in reference to maps required to be ~ished by the
City to the Southern Calif. Edison Company, wherein the said
Engineer recommended that the City Instruct the Edison Company
to draw same, and to bill the City for fifty per cent of the
costs, was read.
It was moved by Leonis, and seconded by Levy that
the communication be filed, and recommendations therelncon-
curred in. Motion carried.
Communication from W. H.De Sellem, requesting authority
to employ George A. Beggs as temporary accountant, at a salary of
Fifty Five Dollars per week, in connection with the detailed in-
ventory referring to the Calif. Edison Company, was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Levy t~at communi-
cation be filed, and the necessary authorization be given.
Motion carried.
Resolution No.877, a resolution of the City Council
declaring their intention to vacate and abandon a~portion of
Bickett Street, was read.
It was moved by Durbin,

Communication from the City Engineer, recommending the
acceptance of work performed by Walter Ferem Company, painting
of water tank at pumping plant No. ~. was read.

the conmw.nication of the City Engineer be filed, and the re-
.commendation concurred in. Motion carried.
The minutes of the meeting of the Committee of Water
and Power of August 3rd, 1937, were zoead.

remove old driveway and curb and replace with new curb and

permit to construct sidewalk,.curb, gutter, pavement and storm
drain on north side of Fruitland Road ~rom Soto Street to a

Application 5442: Owens Parks Lumber Co., for permit to
connect drainage to catch basin on south side o~ 38th. street
at Ross St.
It was moved by Levy and seconded by Durbin that the
applications be ~iled and permits granted. Motion carried.
Demands on the general fund in the sum, of $8,,102.96
were read.. .
It was moved by Leoni., seconded by Levy,that the de-
mands be allowed and warrants drawn for the same. Motion carried.
It was moved by Durbin" seconded by Levy that this
meeting adjourn to August 10th, 1937; at Three o'clock P.M. Motion
carried.
