CITY C OUNC IL OF TEE CITY OF VERNON.
HELD TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 21st., 1937,

The meeting was called to order by the City Clerk,
T. J. Furlong.
Councilmen present: Durbin, Levy, Peralta.
Councilmen absent: Leonis, Furlong.
In the absence of the Mayor, J. J. Fur10ng~ P. J. Durbin
was unanimously elected Mayor Pro Tem.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the
of the Minutes of the previous meeting be dispensed with. Motion
A communication from the City Engineer recommending the
acceptance of a water well drilled by Barber & Bridges Drilling Company,
under Contract Dated June 1, 1937, was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the communica-
tion be filed, and the recommendation of the City Engineer concurred
in. Motion carried.
. communication from the Fire Chief, stating that ~e has
e~loyed E. A. Lewis, E. W. Sheets, D. V. Collette, E. T. Doyle and
G. T. Jones as hosemen, at a monthly salary of $140.00 per-month,
starting September 1, 1937, and requesting the City Council to ap-
prove the same, was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the communica-
tion of the Fire Chief be filed, and that the City Council approve the
action of the Fire Chief in employing the men above stated, at a salary
of $140.00 per month, starting September 1, 1837, and continue at the
pleasure of the Board. Motion carried. .
A communication from the Fire Chief recommending the accept-
ance of a serVice truck heretofor~ ordered by the City, was read. '
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the communica-
tion be filed, and the recommendation of the Fire Chief concurred in,

A communication from the Los Angeles Flood Control District,
regarding the condemnation for an easement for flood control between
the Soto Street and Downey Road, and requesting the City to consent to
the acquisition of right of way without compensation on property recent-
ly acquired by the City, was read. .
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the same be
referred to the City Attorney. Motion carried.
A communication from M.&M. Broom Company, requesting that
a Red Zone be painted on each side of the entrance to 1905 East 55th. St.
was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Levy that .ame be re-
ferred to the Police Department. Motion carried.

A Communication from the West Coast Pattern~m.patl"". request-
ing a permit to operate .a wood and metal pattern shop,ati20041l.Vernon

It was moved by Peralta.. seconded by Levy that the communica-
tion be filed.. and the permit be granted. Motion carried.

A communication from Ruth Dredger Company, regarding water
drainage at 5980 S..Boyle Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that same be re-
ferred to the City Engineer. Motion carried.
A communication from Joe E. Hill.. Broker.. regarding the
distribution of advertising matter.. was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that same be re-
ferred to the Police Department. Motion carried.
Communications from the following firms for per.mitsto baul
refuse from their premises upon and along the streetsoftheCit';y of
Vernon, were read: The Bedell Engineering Co., 5400 Santa Fe Avenue;
l:arion.FurnitureCo... 2201 E. 51st. St.; Fibreboard Products.. Inc.;
and the ,Coast Packing Co., 3275 East Vernon Avenue.
It was moved by Levy, second~d by Peralta that the communica-
tions be filed, and permits granted. Motion carried.
ORDINANCE No. 509, an ordinance regulating the business of
ftAuto Wreckersftwas read for the second reading.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Levy that Ordinance No.
509 be passed for the second ~eading. Motion carried.
ORDINANCE No. 509 was read for the third and :final reading.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Durbin that same be

RESOLUTION No. 887, a resolution approving Speci:fication
No. 107, was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that Resolution No.
887 be adopted. Motion carried.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the City Clerk
be instructed to advertise for bids for merchandise set forth in Speci-
fication No. 107. Motion oarried.
RESOLUTION No. 888, a resolution approving the request of
Saunders Brothers for the Recision of their Contract, was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that Resolution No.
888 be adopted. Motion carried. .

No. 891 be adopted. Motion carried.
The Report of the Police Department was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that same be filed.
Motion carried.
The following applications, all having the approval of the
City Engineer, were read:
Application 5514: Southern California Edison Co., for permit
to set one pole ror guying line extension to-'serve Quality Foundry &
Manufg. Co., on south side of 26th Street., 575 feet west or Soto St..
Application 5515: Southern California Edison Co., for permit
to set one pole and one a.nchor to serve Consolidated Rock Products
Co.'; on south side of 27th Street, 830 reet west of Santa Fe Ave.
Application 5516: Owens Illinois Glass Co., for permit to
remove pavement and gutter on south s~de of E. 50th St." approximately
300 feet east of Soto Street.

Application 5517: Southern California Edison Co., for permit
to move pole approximately 3 feet east on north side of 38th Street
approximately 130 feet west of Santa Fe Avenue.'
Application 5518: Owens Illinois Pacific Coast Co. to break
and reconstruct curb south side of 50th Street, approximate 1; 300 feet
east of Soto Street.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the applica-
tionsbe filed, and permits granted. Motion carried.
