MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE
CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERNON
HELD TUESDAY, DECEMBER 7, 1937, AT
THREE O'CLOCK P.M., AT THE CITY HALL
OF THE CITY OF VERNON, 4305 SANTA FE
AVEmlE, VERNON, CALIFORNIA.

The meeting was called to order by the Mayor, J. J.
Furlong.
Councilmen present: Furlong, Levy, Peralta
Councilmen absent: Durbin, Leonis
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the reading of
the Minutes of the previous meeting be dispensed with. Motion carried.
A communication from the office of the County Engineer, County
of Los Angeles, regarding As'sembly Bill 2910 and 2911, was read.
It was moved by Levy, seoonded by Peralta that same be referred
to the City Engineer and City Attorney. Motion carried.
A communication from Fibreboard Products Inc., petitioning the
adoption of a two-hour parking zone near their premises at 4444 Pacific
Blvd., was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that same be referred
to the Police Department for investigation En d report. Motion carried.
A communication from the Automobile Club of Southern California
regarding the adoption of an ordinance to forbid left turns at inter-
sections of major streets, was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that same be referred
to the Police Department for report. Motion carried.
A communication from J. A. McNaughton, requesting a permit to
hold the Great Western Livestock Show and Rodeo from December 13 to 19th.in
at the Union Stock Yards, was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the communication
be filed, and the permit granted. Motion carried.
A communication from Ben Rosenthal, Assemblyman, regarding Arthur.
M. Fisher, who wishes to operate a lunch car on 41st. Street between
Santa Fe Avenue and Alameda Street, was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that same be referred
to the Police Department for report. Motion carried.
A communication from R. A. Phillips, requesting a permit to hang
banners across Downey Road at Leonis Blvd., and Downey Road and Exchange
Avenue., in connection with the Rodeo to be held at the Union Stock Yards

was read.

It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Levy that same be referred
to the Police Department. Motion carried.
A communication from Klix Inc., requesting a permit to operate
a soy bean processing plant at 4949 Everett Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Levy that the communication
be filed, and permit granted. Motion carried.
A communication from Dixie Fry Food Products for a permit to
operate a food product business at 4509 Produce Plaza, was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the communication
be filed, and permit granted. Motion carried.
A communication from the National Home Improvement Co., request-
ing permit to operate a warehouse and office at 2411 E. 26th Street,
dealing in Johns Manville products, was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Levy that the communication
be filed and the permit granted. Motion carried.
A communication from the Associated Meat Jobbers of Southern
California, submitting application of Craig L. Davidson Inc., requesting
a permit to operate a wholesale meat jobbing business at 3301 East Vernon
Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Levy that the communication
be filed and permit granted. Motion carried.
A communication from Sterling Transit Company, requesting a
permit to conduct a trucking business at 2056 E. 51st. Street, was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Levy that the communication
be filed, and permit granted. Motion carried.
A communication from L. P. Mathews requesting a permit to conduct
a wholesale beverage (Non-alcholic) supply business at 4561 E. 48th Street,
was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Levy that the communication
be filed and permit granted. Motion carried.
A communication from Ralph W. Roberts, requesting information
as to whether a plant for the drying and curing of hog hair can be located
on property west of Tropical Hardware Co., north of the river bed and
west of Downey Road, was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the Clerk inform
the writer that no such plant should be located within the City of Vernon.
Motion carried.
A communication from Graham Bros., Inc., requesting a permit to
conduct a business .of dealing in general building supplies, nch as rock,
concrete, cement, etc., at a location east of Soto Street between E.
26th. Street and the Los Angeles River.

It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Levy that the Clerk inform Graham
Bros., Inc. that such a business could be conducted upon the property
described. Motion carried.
A communication from the following firms requesting permits to
haul refuse from their premises upon and along the streets of Vernon,
were read: Cherman Furniture Co., 5607 Santa Fe Avenue; National Home
Improvement Company, 2411 E. 26th. Street; Klis, Inc., 4949 Everett Ave.;
Owens-Illinois Pacific Coast Co., 4900 Loma Vista Avenue; Western Auto
Supply Co., 5055 Magnolia Avenue., and O.K. & L.A. Sawdust Co., 2300
East 38th. Street.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Levy that the communications
be filed, and permits granted. Motion carried.
The report of the Police Department was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that same be filed.
Motion carried.
RESOLUTION No. 897, a resolution of the City Council granting
a six-month's leave of absence to DeSellem from and after December 15,
1937, was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that same be adopted.
Motion carried.
The Minutes of the meeting of the Committee on Water & Power
as of November 16th. was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the minutes
stand approved as read. Motion carried.
The following applications, all having the approval of the City
Engineer, were read:
Application 5641: Department of Water & Power to set two poles
for guying purposes on 25th. Street, south side and west of Santa Fe
and Alameda Street, East-side of Alameda Street 160' north of 37th. St.
A pplication 5642: Southern California Telephone Co., to remove
17 poles on SIS 49th. Street, between Santa Fe Avenue and Alameda Street.
Application 5643: Southern California Telephone Co., to trench
6" and cutting out 12" of pipe on sls 49th Street, 50' west of Santa Fe
Avenue.
Application 5644: Southern California Telephone Co., to remove
one pole on sls Pacific Blfd., 525'1 East of Santa Fe Avenue.
Application 5645: Southern California Telephone Co., to remove
four poles on east side 2nd. Street between 57th & Slauson Avenue.
Application 5646: Southern California Telephone Co., to remove
21 poles on, south side of 37th. Street, between Alameda Street and
Santa Fe Avenue.

poles and one anchor on west side of Ross Street approximately 260'
and 600' south of 38th Street.
Application 5650: Southern California Edison Co., to set one pole
on west side of Boyle Ave., 655' north of Slauson Ave.
Application 5651: Southern California Edison Co., to set one pole
and two sidewalk anchors on south side ot 26th. Street, 1930 and 1935'
east ot Soto Street.
Application 5652: Wilshire Oil Co., to construct driveway on
south side ot 26th. Street, 600' east ot Santa Fe Avenue.
Application 5653: Owens Illinois Pacific Coast Co., to break
curb and construct depression tor outlet ot yard drainage trench on
south side ot 50th. Street.
Application 5654: Gladiator Manutg. Co., to connect to sewer
at 2335 E. 52nd. Street.
Application 5655: Southern California Edison Co., to set poles
on west side of Ross Street, 362 and 487' south of 38th. Street.
A pplication 5656: Aluminum Company to construct two temporary
driveways on west side of Magnolia Avenue, 300'south of Fruitland Road.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Levy that the applications
be filed, and permits approved. Motion carried.
Demands on the general fund in the sum of $8,237.99 were read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the demands be
allowed and warrants drawn. Motion carried.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Levy that the meeting
adjourn. Motion carried.
