MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE
CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERNON
HELD TUESDAY. FEBRUARY 15th, 1938, AT
THREE O'CLOCK P.M., AT THE CITY HALL
OF THE CITY OF VERNON, 4305 SANTA FE
AVENUE, VERNON, CALIFORNIA.

The meeting was called to order by the Mayor, J. J.
Furlong.
Councilmen present: Furlong, Leonis, Peralta, Scheider.
Councilmen absent: Levy.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta that the read-
ing of the Minutes of the previous meeting be dispensed with. Motion
carried.
A communication from the City Engineer advising that he
has employed Mr. Walter B. Hollingsworth as Assistant City Engineer,
at the compensation o~ $100.00 per month, was read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the
communication be filed, and that Mr. Walter B. Hollingsworth be em-
ployed as Assistant Engineer at a compensation of $100.00 per month.
He shall serve as such assistant City Engineer at the pleasure of the
Board. Motion carried.
A report of the consulting electrical engineer, Carl A.
Heinze, on operation of electric system by Southern California Edison
Company ~or the month of December, 1937, was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta that same be
filed, and a copy sent to the Vernon Industrial Development Associa-
tion. Motion carried.
A communication from MellO. Haldeman Corporation on con-
dition of East 37th Street, was read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that same be
referred to the City engineer. Motion carried.
A communication from General Petroleum Corporation, request-
ing permission to paint curb in red paint for approximately 100 feet
in front of the hospital located on East 37th Street, was read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that same be
referred to the Police Department with power to act. Motion carried.
A communication from Buttress & McCe1lan, Ltd., requesting
the repeal of business tax ordinance now in force, was read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that same be
referred to the financial committee. Motion carried.

A communication from R. T. Dorsey, Traffic Engineer of
the Los Angeles Police Department, regarding tr~ffic conditions at
25th and Alameda, 38th and Alameda, Vernon md Alameda and 55th and
Alameda Streets, was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Scheider that same be
referred to the Vernon Industrial Development Association. Motion
carried.
A communication from the City Health Officer, presenting
a demand in the sum of $12.34 in connection with the vaccinations
of the children of the Vernon school, was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta that the de-
m~d be allowed, warrant drawn for same, and that same be referred
to the City Attorney to advise the health officer as to the city's
rights in the premises. Motion carried.
A communication from Vernon G. Spencer, requesting a per-
mit to operate a garage at 1936 E. Vernon Avenye, was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta that the
communication be filed, and permit granted. Motion carried.
A communication from J. R. Molony Company, regarding the
bond of W. H. DeSellem, was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta that the communi-
cation be referred to the City Attorney. Motion carried.
A communication from Carl K. Heinze, consulting engineer,
regarding two partial releases and bill of sale executed by Southern
California Edison Company, was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta that the matter
be referred to the Vernon Industrial Development Association for rec-
commendation. Motion carried.
A communication from Carl A. Heinze, consulting electrical
engineer, recommending that service deposits held by the City be trans-
ferred to the Southern California Edison Company, was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Scheider that the mat-
ter be referred to the Vernon Industrial Development Association for
recommendation. Motion carried.
A communication from Abner Miller, requesting permit to haul
refuse from premises at 2323 E. 52nd Street upon and along the streets
of the City of Vernon, was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Scheider that the communi-
cation be filed and permit granted. Motion carried.
A communication from the Industrial Trading Company for a
permit to conduct a business of buying and selling machinery and equip-
ment at 2600 Santa Fe Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that same be
referred to the Police Department. Motion carried.

The report of the Police Department was read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that same
be filed. Motion carried.
The Minutes of the meeting of the Committee on Water &
Power as of February 1, 1938, were read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peraita that the minutes
stand approved as read. Motion carried.
The following applications, all having the approval of
the City Engineer were read: '
Application 5765: Southern California Telephone Co., to
place anchor on north-side of 46th Street, 1 foot west of St. Charles
Avenue.
Application 5766: Southern California Edison Co., to set
pole on north side of Slauson Ave., approximately 300 feet east of
Magno~ia Avenue.
Application 5767: General Petroleum Corporation, to replace
broken curb on E. 37th Street, 772 feet west of Soto Street.
Application 5768: General Petroleum Corporation, to re-
pair 8-inch oil pipe line on north side of 52nd Street, at intersection
of A.T.& S.r. Ry. Tracks.
Application 5769: W. J. Tannahill & Son, to install roof
drain under sidewalk and curb at 2101 E. 38th. Street.
Application 5770: General Petroleum Corporation, to in-
stall 2 oil lines across Boyle Avenue, 991 feet north of Leonis Blvd.
Application 5771: Southern California Gas Company, to in-
stall 129 feet of 3 inch gas main on east side of Magnolia Ave., north
of Slauson Avenue.
Application 5772: R. G. Knoll Company, to connect to sewer
at 2730 E. 46th. Street.
Application 5773: Southern California Gas Company to in-
stall gas service at 2119 E. 25th Street.
Ap~lication5774: Southern California Gas Company to in-
stall service at 3026 E. Vernon Avenue.
Application 5775: Southern California Gas Company to in-
stall gas service at 2262 E. 37th Street.
Application 5776: Southern California Telephone Company
to place one anchor on north side Vernon Avenue, 40 feet west Qf
Downey Road.
It Was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the
applications be filed and permits granted. Motion carried.

Demands on the General Fund in the sum of $15,740.36
were read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider that the
demands be allowed and warrants drawn. Motion carried.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Scheider that the
meeting adjourn. Motion carried.
