19380301 Regular City Council Meeting - Minutes r ~ ~ 'j t MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERNON HELD TUESDAY, MARCH 1st, 1938, AT THREE O'CLOCK P.M., AT THE CITY HALL OF THE CITY OF VERNON, 4305 SANTA FE AVENUE, VERNON, CALIFORNIA. - - -- - - - - - - - - - - The meeting w~s called to order by the M~yor, J. J. Furlong. Councilmen present: Furlong, Leonis, Peralta, Scheider. Councilmen ~bsent: Levy. It was moved by Leonie, seconded by Per~lta that the re~d- ing of the Minutes of the previous meeting be dispensed with. Motion carried. A report of the Southern California Gas Comp~ny on Fr~n- chise Ordin~nces Nos. 89, 270, 463 and 514, together with a check in the sum of $687.21, was re~d. It w~s moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that s~e be referred to the finance committee. Motion carried. A communication from Isadore Weiner, requesting ~ permit to conduct a lead and met~l recovery business at 2012 E. Vernon Avenue, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that same be taken under advisement. Motion carried. A communication from Gladding, McBean & Co., st~ting they have taken over the Ames Grinding Company at 1919 E. 52nd Street, and requesting that the permit be transferred to them for the same oper- ations, was read. - It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the communication be received and filed, and the Clerk be instructed to trfnsfer said permit. Motion carried. A communication from E.L. and W.S. GoddaDd for a pe1'mit to operate a lunch counter at California Walnut Growers Ass0eiation Ware- house property, was read. It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta tha,t the communi- cation be filed, and permit granted. Motion carried. CSubjec.t to the approval of the Police Department.) A communication from the Industrial Trading Company, .request- ing the establishing of a loading zone at their place of business, 2600 Santa Fe Avenue, was read. , It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Leonie that the matter be referred to the Police Department, with power to act. Motion carried. A communication from Davey Tree Surgery Company, Ltd. requesting a permit to prune trees interfering with the Southern California Edison Company's wires, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta, that the communication be received and filed, and a permit be issued, affecting only trees upon the public highway. Motion carried. Communications from the following firms, requesting per- mits to haul refUse upon and along the city streets of the City of Vernon, were read: J. A. Pipe & Machinery Co., 5616 Santa Fe Ave., Industrial Trading Co., 2600 Santa Fe Avenue; Goldring Packing Co., 346l E. Vernon Ave; Pioneer Flintkote Co., 55th and Alameda Sts., and Southern California Edison Company, from 3200 E. Vernon Avenue. It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta that the communications be filed, and permitsgl'"anted. Motion carried. A communication. from the City of Los Angeles, Pepartment of Parks, requesting a permit to haul refuse through t,he-Ci ty, was read. It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider that same be referred to the Committee as a Whole.' . 'Motion carried. The Report of the Police Department was read. It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Leonis that same be filed. Motion carried. " RESOEUTION No. 902, a resolution of the City of Vernon calling a general election, and fixing the polling place, was read. It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Scheider that said Resolution No. 902 be adopted. Motion carried. At this time the City Attorney presented to the City Council a tentative Agreement approved by the City Council of the GitY,of Los Angeles, affecting the sewer sy~tem in the City of V ~rnon. It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Scheider that the tentative Agreement presented by the City Attorney be filed and the City Attorney and special Counsel be authori~ed to prepare the permanent Agreement between the City of Vernon and the City of Los Angeles, and present same to the City for its approval. Motion carried. The Minutes of the Meeting of the Committee on Water & l~ower as of February 15th., 1938, were read. It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Scheider that the Minutes stand approved as read. Motion carried. The following Applications, all having the approval of the City Engineer, were read: -2- 23 .. Application 5783: W. G. Baker for a permit to remove 16 feet of curb and 80 feet of sidewalk and replace with 18 feet of curb and 80 feet of driveway. at 1938 E. Vernon Ave. Application 6784: Warner N. Henry for permit to remove curb and construct depressed curb at 3463 E. 26th Street. Application 5785: Southern California Edison Co., for a permit to remove 6 poles in E. 27th Street. east of Santa Fe Avenue. Application 5786: Aluminum Company for a permit to con- struct a curb and sidewalk at Southwest corner of Fruitland and Magnolia Avenues: Application 5787: Southern California Telephone Company for a permit to place 2 poles and 1 anchor on north side of 26th Street. 58 and 168 feet east of Santa Fe Avenue. Application 5788: Southern California Gas Co.. for permit to make gas service at 3425 E. Vernon Avenue. Application 5789: Southern California Edison Co., for per- mit to remove 3 poles at 25th & Santa Fe Avenue and 25th Street west of Santa Fe Avenue. Application 5790: Gem packing Company to connect to the sewer at 38ll Soto Street. It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta that the communications be filed and permits granted. Motion carried. Demands on the general fund in the sum of $5,567.84 were read. It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Scheider that the demands be allowed and warrants drawn for the amount.
