MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE
CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERNON
HELD TUESDAY, MAY 17, 1938, AT THREE
O'CLOCK P. M., AT THE CITY HALL OF
THE CITY OF VERNON, 4305 SANTA FE
AVENUE, VERNON, CALIFORNIA.

The meeting was called to order by the Mayor, J. J.
Furlong.
Councilmen present: Furlong, Peralta, Scheider, Leonis
Councilmen absent: Levy.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Leonis that the
reading of the Minutes of the previous meeting be dispensed with.
Motion carried.
A communication from the Petrol Corporation, requesting
permission to use one 5000 barrel and two 10,000 barrel tanks for
the storing of stove distillate at old Hercules Refinery property
was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Scheider that s~e be
referred to the Fire Department and the Fomite Inspector. Motion carried.
A report from the Southern California Telephone Company
on franchise Ordinance No. 108, was read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that same
be filed. Motion carried.
A communication from the General Petroleum Corporation
requesting a one-hour parking zone on the north side of 37th St.,
from Soto Street, westerly a distance of 200 feet, was read.
It was mDveg by Peralta, seconded by Scheider that same
be referred to the Police Department with instructions to comply
with the request of the General Petroleum Corporation. Motion carried.
A communication from Mrs. Frank Bishop, 3210 E. 26th St.,
requesting permission to sell soft drinks at soft ball g~es, held
on Stauffer Chemical property, in the City of Vernon, was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta that the
communication be filed, and permit granted. Motion carried.
A communication trom the Southern California Meat Co.,
requesting permission to install 3t x 3i ammonia compressor, to be
used as a booster tor operation ot a small sharp freezer at 3301
E. Vernon Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider that s~e be
referred to the Fire Chief for examination and report. Motion carried.
A communication from Ben Ginsberg, requesting license to
buy and sell meat within the City, was read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the

communication be filed, and permit granted. Motion carried.
Communications from the following firms, requesting
permits to haul refuse upon and along the streets of the City of
Vernon from their premises, were read: Growers Cold Storage Corp.,
5050 S. Alameda Street; Cleveland Wrecking Company, in connection
with the demolition of the office building of Columbia Steel
Corporation at 2087 E. Slauson Avenue; California Furniture Co.,
4424 East 49th Street; Richards-Neustadt Construction Co.,
5500 S. Boyle Avenue; General Petroleum Corporation, 2525 E.
37th Street, and Utility Fan Corporation, 2528 Santa Fe Avenue.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider that the
communications be filed, and permits granted. Motion carried.
A communication from the City Engineer, submitting a
deed from the Aluminum Company of America, conveying a 10 foot
strip along the south side of Fruitland Road to the City of Vernon,
was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider that same
be referred to the City Attorney for clieck1ng and report at the
next meeting, and, if correct, to supply the proper resolution.
Motion carried.
The Minutes of the Committee on Water & Power, as of
May 3rd., 1938, were read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider that the
same stand approved as read. Motion carried.
The report of the Police Department was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider that same
be filed. Motion carried.
A report from Carl A. Heinze, Consulting Engineer, on
the operation of the electric system for the month of March, 1938,
was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Scheider that same
be filed. Motion carried.
A communication from the Shell Oil Company, was read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that same
be taken under advisement. Motion carried.
Resolution No. 905, authorizing the City Engineer to
employ some reputable firm to gauge sewage for the City of Vernon
was read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that
Resolution No. 905 be adopted. Motion carried.
The following applications, all having the approval of
the City Engineer, were read:
Application 5884: Wilshire Oil Company, for permit to
install six oil iines in the east end of E. 27th Street.

Application 5885: Wilshire Oil Company for permit to
install six oil lines in east end of E. 28th Street.
Application 5886: M. P. McCatfey for per.mit to construct
three driveways at 2121 E. 25th Street.
~plication 5887: Southern California Gas Company for
permit to ma-ge gas service at 3838 Santa Fe Avenue.
Application 5888: Carrie Finn Burke to connect to sewer
at 2039 E. 37th Street.
Application 5890: Southern Cali:forn1a Edison Company,
to set two anchors on the south side of 27th Street, approximately
355' and 750' east of Santa Fe Avenue.
Application 5891: Southern California Edison Company,
to remove two poles and two anchors and install two poles and
three anchors on the east side of Santa Fe Avenue, opposite 49th.
Street and 51st Street.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider that the
applications be tiled, and permits granted. Motion carried.
Application 5889: M. P. McCaffey, to connect to sewer
at 2121 E. 25th Street, with a communication from Lloyd Aldrich,
City Engineer of Los Angeles, att~ched, was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Scheider that the
application be referred to the Sewer Committee as a Whole. Motion
carried.
Demands on the General Fund in the sum of $10,686.03
were read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the
demands be allowed, and warrants drawn. Motion carried.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the
meeting adjourn. Motion carried.
