MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE
~ITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERNON,
HELD TUESDAY, JULY 5, 1938, AT THREE
O'CLOCK P. M., AT THE CITY HALL OF THE
CITY OF VERNON, 4305 SANTA FE AVENUE,
VERNON, CALIFORNIA
The City Clerk at this time called the meeting to
order, and asked for an appointment of a Mayor pro tem.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that
Councilman J. B. Leonis act as chairman of the meeting. Motion carried.
Councilmen present: Peralta, Leonis, Scheider.
Councilmen absent: Levy, Furlong.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the
reading of the Minutes of the previous meeting be dispensed with.
Motion carried. .
A communication from the City Engineer, requesting auth-
ority to employ Mr. Edwin Vanden Bossche as inspector on the Metro-
politan Water District work at a salary of $150.00 per month, begin-
ning June 25, 1938, was read.
It was Moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider that the
communication be concurred in, and that Mr. Edwin Vanden Bossche be
appointed inspector on the Metropolitan Water District work at a
salary of $150.00 per month, to hold said position at the pleasure
of the Board. Motion carried.
A communication from the City's Consulting Electrical
Engineer, requesting authority to certify for the City the inventory
intended to be transferred to the City by the Edison Company in ad-
vance of the submission of papers covering the necessary trustee's
releases and bills of sale, etc., was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider that Carl
A. Heinze, Consulting Electrical Engineer, ,be authorized to certify
the inventory, as requested in his communication, and that the com-
munication be filed. Motion carried.
A communication from the Southern California Edison
Co., together with a check in the sum of $22,464.93, representing
two per cent of the gross receipts collected, was read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the
communication be filed, and the check accepted. Motion carried.
A communication from the County of Los Angeles Regional
Planning Commission, requesting a copy of zoning ordinance and maps,
was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Scheider that the
communication be filed. Motion ca~ried.

A oommunication from the Southern California Telephone
Company, requesting the $1500.00 exoavation deposit be refunded,
was read.
It was moved by Scheider, seoonded by Peralta that the
oommunioation be laid over until the next meeting. Motion oarried.
A oommunication from Superbo Manufacturing Company, re-
questing a permit to operate a small brass and white metal foundry
at 5555 Magnolia Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Soheider, seoonded by Peralta that same
be referred to the Polioe Department for investigation and report.
Motion carried.
A oommunioation from Howard Supply Company, protesting
against oertain operations by California Cotton Oil Company, was read.
It was moved by Soheider, seoonded by Peralta that the
oommunioation be answered, and a oopy of the letter be sent to the
California Cotton Oil Company. Motion carrie d.
A circular letter from Sterling C. Lines, Consu~ting
Engineer, regarding Federal Government Work, was read.
It was moved by Scheider, seoonded by Peralta that same

A communication from E. A. Fluegel, requesting a permit
to operate a bottle water truck within the City, was read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the
oommunication be filed and the permit granted. Motion oarried.
A oommunioation from the Diamond Freight Lines Inc., re-
questing a permit to operate a truoking business at 2149 E. 37th St.,
was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider that the
communication be filed, and permit granted. Motion oarried.
A oommunioation from Elijer-California Company, in behalf
of box-lunch applioation of Mr. Sam Forese, was read.
It was moved by Soheider, seoonded by Peralta that same be
referred to the Polioe Department. Motion carried.
A oommunioation from Kenneth Webb of 974 Orme Ave., re-
questing a permit to operate a lunch wagon on Soto Street between 26th.
and 37th. Streets on property of Graham Brothers, was read.
It was moved by Soheider, seconded by Peralta that same be
referred to the Police Department. Motion carried.
Communioations from Oilfields Pipe & Supply Company, of
5600 Santa Fe Avenue, and from Hall-Sootto Motor Car Company of 5041
Santa Fe Avenue, requesting permits to haul refuse upon and along the
publio streets of the City of Vernon, were read.
It was moved by Peralta, seoonded by Soheider that the
oommunioations be filed, and permits granted. Motion carried.

ORDINANCE No. 517, an ordinance of the City of Vernon
prohibiting the propelling of any motor vehicle upon or along any
public street in the City of Vernon unless same is equipped with
pneumatic or solid rubber tires, was read for the second reading.
It was moved by Peralta, seoonded by Scheider that
Ordinanoe No. 517 be passed for the seoond reading. Motion carried.

At this time the Mayor pro tem announoed that he was
talking with the Management of the American Can Company, and that
they appreoiate the way in whioh the Vernon Police Department is
handling the present labor situation.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that said
announoement be filed. Motion carried.
The Minutes of the Committee on Water & Power, as of
June 21st., 1938, were read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the
same stand approved as read. Motion carried.
The following applioations, all having the approval of
the City Engineer, were read:
Application 5949:. The City of Los Angeles for a permit
to make excavation in Soto Street at L. A. River for sewer connections
in Soto Street.
Application 5950~ Buttress & McClellan for a permit to
construct a sidewalk at 3838 Santa Fe Avenue.
Application 5952: Kimmont Manufacturing Company, for a
permit to construvt sidewalk and driveway at 5420 Santa Fe Avenue.
Application 5953: Buttress & McClellan for a permit to
oonneot to sewer at 3838 Santa Fe Avenue.
Application 5954: Buttress & McClellan for a permit to
connect to sewer at 3840 Santa Fe Avenue.

Application 5955: Southern California Edison Company, to
remove eighteen poles on the west side of Santa Fe Avenue, between
Vernon Avenue and 25th Street.
Application 5956: Southern California Gas Company, to
install gas service on east side of Pacific Boulevard, 187 feet north
of Leonis Boulevard.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider that the
applications be filed, and permits granted. Motion carried.
Demands on the General Fund in the sum of $7,209.88, weBe

demands be allowed, and warrants drawn. Motion carried.
