Councilmen present: Furlong, Leonis, Scheider, Peralta Councilmen absent: Levy It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the reading of the Minutes of the previous meeting be dispensed with. Motion carried. A communication from the City Engineer, recommending acceptance of the Electric Switch-board constructed and installed by the Benjamine Electric Company for p~p house No.2, was read. It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta that the communication be filed and the recommendation concurred tn. Motion carried. Communications from the following firms, requesting that Mr. Lou Brown be given a permit to act as watchman at thel11!:pl'emises.: Klix Inc., 4949 Everett Avenue; Edw. Katzlnger Company, 4464 District Blvd.; Oriental Rug Cushion Co., 4371 E. 49th Street; Doyle Packing Company, 4703 E. ,50th Stree t. were read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the communications be filed, and the permit granted, subject to the approval of the Police Chief. Motion carried. A communication from California Cotton Oil Corp., in answer to the complaint of Howard Supply Company regarding dust nuisance, was read. It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider that same be filed and that the Clerk forward a copy thereof to the Howard Supply Company. Motion carried. A circular letter from the Pacific Coast Association of Fire Chiefs, regarding the annual conference to be held in Salt Lake City on September 19th to 22nd Incl., 1938, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the communication be filed and the Chief of the City Fire Department be authorized to attenA said conference, subject to the approval of the Fire Committee. Motion carried. A communication from the Chip-Steak Company, requesting a permit to operate a meat jobbing business at 3301 E. Vernon Avenue, was read. It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta that the connnunication be filed, and permit granted. Motion carried. A communication from the Atlas Galvanizing Inc., re- questing a permit to operate a galvanizing business at 4636 Pacific Boulevard, was read. It was moved by Peralta/' seconded by Scheider that the communication be filed, and permit granted. Motion carried. A communication from Peter Athan and Peter Georgeson, requesting a permit to operate a restaurant formerly known as "Cowboy Cafe", at 4401 Downey Road, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the communication be filed, and permit granted, subject to the approval of the Police Department. Motion carried. A communication from W. Greene, Union Serviee Station, 5831 Santa Fe Avenue, requesting a permit to haul refuse from the premises, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the communication be filed, and permit granted. Motion carried. A communication from the Los Angeles By-Products Co., re- questing a permit to haul refuse from their premises at 1819 E. 25th Street, was read. It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider that the same be referred to the Police Department. Motion carried. The Repo~t of Vernon Industrial Development Association for the period ending June 30, 1938, was read. It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta that same be filed. Motion carried. The Report of the Police Department was read. It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta that same be filed. Motion carried. A report of Carl A. Heinze, Consulting Electrical Engineer, on the operation of the City's electric system by Southern California Edison Company, for the month of May, 1938, was read. It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta that same be Motion carried. filed. The Minutes of the Committee on Light, lower, Water, Build- ing and Purchasing, as of July 5th, 1938, were read. ORDINANCE No. 518, an ordinance regulating liquefied petroleum gases was read for the second reading. It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta that Ordinance No. 518 be passed for the second reading. Motion carried. Ordinance No. 518 was read for the third reading. It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta that Ordinance No. 518 be adopted. Motion carried by the following votes: Ayes: Leonis, Scheider, Peralta, Furlong. Noes: None Absent: Levy. Resolution No. 917, a resolution authorizing and instruct- ing the Mayor and the City Clerk to execute an easement between the Los Angeles & Salt Lake Railroad Co., and Union Pacific Railroad Company and the City, was read. It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta that Resolution No. 917 be adopted. Motion carried. Resolution No. 918, a resolution authorizing and instruct- ing 'the Mayor and City Clerk to execute an easement between the Las Vegas !and a:tld Water Company and the City, was read. It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta that Resolution No. 918 be adopted. Motion carried. Resolution No. 919, a resolution fixing the prevailing rate per diem wages on work to be performed on Specifications No. 110, was read. It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider that Resolu- tion No. 919 be adopted. Motion carried. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the City Attorney be instructed to take such steps as necessary for the elimi- nation of the driving of cattle on Soto Street. Motion carried. It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider that the Clerk be authorized to advertise for bids for the construction of a sanitary sewer in accordance with Specifications No. 110. Motion carried. A Petition, filed by E. K. Wood, et aI, in re~erence to picketing, was read. It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta that same be referred to the Vernon Industrial Development Association. Motion carried. The following applications, all having the approval of the City Engineer, were read: Application 5951: E. K. Wood Lumber Co., to construct 6" asphaltic concrete pavement in E. 48th Street, approximately 500' east of Alameda Street. A~plication 5960: L. A. Ap~lication 5963: Southern California Edison Company to raise neck of manhole on south side of Fruitland Road 143 feet west of Pacific Blvd., to new street level. It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta that the applications be filed, and permits granted. Motion carried. Demands on the General Fund in 'the sum of $16,089.88, were read.
