19380906 Regular City Council Meeting - Minutes MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERNON, HELD TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 6, 1938, AT THREE 0' CLOCK P. M., AT THE CITY HALL OF THE CITY OF VERNON, 4305 SANTA FE AVENtffi, VERNON, CALIFORNIA - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The meeting was called to order by the Mayor, J. J. Furlong. Councilmen present: Furlong, Scheider, Peralta, Leonis Councilmen absent: Levy It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the read- ing of the Minutes of the previous meeting be dispensed with. Motion carried. A report of the Los Angeles Railway Company on franchise ordinance No. 91, for the period ending August 12, 1938, together with a check in the sum of $276.50, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the re- port be filed, and the check accepted. Motion carried. A communication from the Union Oil Company of California, re- questing the approval of the City of Vernon to the adjustment of rental payment period to June 30th, on various franchise ordinances, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that same be referred to the City Attorney. Motion carried. A proposal submitted by Terminix Company of Southern Calif- ornia, to termite proof the City hall building, was read. It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta that same be referred to the Fire Chief and City Engineer. Motion carried. A communication from the Superior Meat Company, requesting a permit to conduct a wholesale meat business at 3425 E. Vernon Avenue, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the com- munication be filed, and permit granted. Motion carried. A communication from Advance Saw Works, of 2665 Santa Fe Avenue, regarding parking conditions at their place of business was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that same be referred to the Police Department with the power to act. Motion carried. A communication from James Jordan Ltd., regarding parking con- ditions at 3200 E. Slauson Avenue, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that same be referred to the Police Department with the power to act. Motion. carried. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the City Engineer be empowered to employ an inspector on the sewer now under con- struction in the City of Vernon. Motion carried. -1- 76 Communications from the following firms for permits to haul refuse from their premises upon and along the public streets in the City of Vernon, were read: Bag & Paper Co., 4355 Fruitland Road; Brown & Bevis Equipment Co., 4900 Santa Fe Avenue~ Kennedy Name Plate Co., 4500 Pacific Blvd., and Fibreboard Products Inc., of 3720S. Soto Street. It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Scheider that the com- munications be filed, and permits granted. Motion carried. Resolution No. 936, a resolution authorizing and instructing Francis Bates, City Engineer, to file an application for grant through the Federal Emergency Administration, was read. It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta that Resolution No. 936 be adopted. Motion carried. Resolution No. 937, a resolution instructing the City Treasurer to transfer certain funds from the Emergency Fund to the General Fund, was read. It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta that Resolution No. 937 be adopted. Motion carried. Resolution No. 938, a resolution setting aside certain funds for financing the improvement of 37th Street, was read. It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta that Resolution No. 938 be adopted. Motion carried. The report of the Police Department was read. It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Scheider that same be filed. Motion carried. The following applications, all having the approval of the City Engineer, were read: Application 6024: Gilmore Oil Company, to repair oil line on south side of ij7th Street, east of Santa Fe R.R. tracks. Application 6025: Union Oil Company, to locate oil line valve in 55th Street, approximately 1600' west of Santa Fe Avenue. Application 6026: Pioneer Flintkote Company, to construct manhole for sanitary sewer in 55th Street, 648' east of Alameda Street. Application 6027: Pioneer Flintkote Co., addition to manhole in 55th Street. Application 6028: General Petroleum Corporation, to remove and install curb in north side of 37th Street. Application 6029: Rich Manufacturing Co., to construct drive- way, durb and sidewalk at 3851 Santa Fe Avenue. . Application 6030: Southern California Gas Co., to install gas service at 4940 Santa Fe Avenue. Application 6031: Southern California Gas Co., to abandon gas service at 2004 E. 45th Street. Application 6032: Southern California Gas Co., to abandon gas service at 1861 E. 55th Street. -2- 77 Application 6033: Southern California Edison Co., to set one pole on the east side of Downey Road, approximately 620' north of Ex- change Avenue. It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta that the appli- cations be filed, and permits granted. Motion carried. The Minutes of the Committee of Light, Power, Water, Building and Purchasing, as of August 16, 1938, were read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta, that same stand approved as read. Motion carried. Demands on the General Fund in the sum of $6,214.92, were read. It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Scheide~ that the demands be allowed and warrants drawn. Motion carried. adjourn.
