MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING
OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF VERNON, HELD TUESDAY, OCTOBER
4th, 1938, AT THREE O'CLOCK P.M.
AT THE CITY HALL OF THE. CITY OF
VERNON, 4305 SANTA FE AVENUE,
VERNON, CALIFORNIA.
The meeting was called to order by the Mayor J. J.
Furlong.
Councilmen present: Furlong, Peralta, Leonis, Scheider
Councilmen absent: Levy.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Leonis that the read-
ing of the Minutes of the previous meeting be dispensed with. Motion
carried.
A communication from the Los Angeles Railway Corp, to-
gether with draft of franchise ordinance across 46th., 48th., 59th.
Streets and Fruitland Road along Pacific Boulevard, was read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the
communication be filed. Motion carried.
Ordinance No. 521, an ordinance granting a franvhise to
to the Los Angeles Railway Corp. across 46th., 48th., 50th. Streets
and Fruitland Road along Pacific Boulevard, was read for the first
reading.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider that
Ordinance No. 521 be passed for the first reading. Motion carried.
A communication from Klinker Termite Control Co., sub-
mitting proposal for control of termites in the City Hall building
was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta that same
be referred to the Fire Chief and the City Engineer for report at
the next meeting. Motion carried.
A communication from Sears, Roebuck and Co., requesting
a permit to install vending machine for candy at their warehouse
on South Soto Street for employees use only, was read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that
same be referred to the Police Department for investigation and
report. Motion carried.
A communication from S. J. Ganzel, requesting a permit
to operate a Lumber Dimension Mill at 3160 Bandini Road, was read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the
communicatiQn be filed, and permit granted. Motion carried.
Communications from Acme Brewing Co., of 2080 E. 49th.
Street, and Byron Jackson Co., of 2301 E. Vernon Ave., for permits
to haul refuse from their premises upon and along the streets of
the City of Vernon, were read.

It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider that
the applications be filed, and permits granted. Motion carried.
Report of the Police Department was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta that same
be filed. Motion carried.
A communication from Pioneer-Flintkote Company, request-
ing a permit to construct a traffic tunnel across 55th Street, in
connection with the construction of new manufacturing and ware-
house on north side of 55th Street, was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Leonis that same be
referred to the City Engineer. Motion carried.
A communication from Pioneer-Flintkote Company, sub-
mitting plans for a loading dock in connection with the construction
of the new manufacturing and warehouse building on the north side of
55th Street, was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta that the
communication be filed, and permit granted. Motion carried.
A communication from Frankie Mann, requesting a permit
to operate a soda-boy on property to 2300 E. 52nd Street, was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider that same
be referred to the Police Department. Motion carried.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that there
be appropriated from the General Fund the sum of $1000.00, to be
used by the chairman of the Water and Power Committee and the City
Engineer if they find it necessary to make a trip to Washington
to discuss with the Federal authorities the necessity of appropri-
ating money for flood control work in the Los Angeles river. Motion
carried.
The following applications, all having the approval of the
City Engineer, were read:
Application 6060: Southern California Edison Co., for a
permit to remove ground blocks from around poles on the north side
of Vernon ,Avenue, 343' and 668' east of Alameda Street;
Application 6061: Southern California Edison Co., to re-
pair service at 1817 East 25th Street.
Application 6062: Southern California Gas Company, to
install gas service at 2929 Santa Fe Avenue.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider that the
applications be filed, and permits granted. Motion carried.
The minutes of the Committee of Light, Power, Water, Build-
ing and Purchasing, as of September 20, 1938, were read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that SaIne
stand approved as read. Motion carried.
Demands on the General Fund, in the sum of $7,380.16 were
read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta that same be
allowed, and warrants drawn. Motion carried.
