MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
VERNON, HELD TUESDAY, DECEMBER
6, 1938, AT THREE O'CLOCK P.M.,
AT THE CITY HALL OF THE CITY OF
VERNON, 4305 SANTA FE AVENUE,
VERNON, CALIFORNIA.
The meeting was called to order by the Mayor, J. J.
Furlong.
Councilmen present: Furlong, Peralta, Scheider
Coftncilmen absent: Leonis, Levy
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider that the
reading of the Minutes of the previous meeting be dispensed with.
Motion carried.
A communication from Supervisor Herbert C. Legg, ex-
pressing his appreciation for the cooperation and support given
him during his term as Supervisor, was read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that same
be filed. Motion carried.
A communication from J. H. Baxter & Co., regarding the
bids tor the re-roofing of the reservoir, was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider that same
be filed. Motion carried.
A communication from Commercial Sand Blast Co., regarding
the nuisance created by Los Angeles Incinerator on East 26th Street,
was read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that same
be tiled. Motion carried.
A communication trom Leo V. Youngworth, submitting list
of locations at which the Rowe Service Company wish to place cigar-
ette vending machines, was read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that same
be filed. Motion carried.
A communication from H. C. Young, 2832 Oregon Street
Los Angeles, requesting a permit to place a candy vending machine
in Sears RoebucK warehouse at 5525 Soto Street, was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider that the
communication be filed and permit granted. Motion carried.
A communication from E. J. Farwell, 3723 S. Budlong Ave.,
Los ~elesL requesting a permit to place candy vending machines
in various ractories within the city, was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider that same
be referred to the City Clerk. Motion carried.
A communication from Independent Paper Stock Company,
requesting a permit to operate a warehouse at 2501 E. 26th Street,
being the Old Southern Glass Company property, was read.

A communication from Southern Sales & Service Co.~ re-
questing a permit to conduct a food brokerage at 4525 Produce Plaea,
was read.

A cOmllnmication from C. E. Rhodes~ 7232 Atlantic Blvd.~
requesting a permit to operate as watchman for Edw. Katzinger
Company~ Oriental Rug Cushion Company~ Klix~ Inc.~ and L. A.
Sausage Co. (all within the C.M.D.) was read.
It was moved by Peralta~ seconded by Scheider that same
be re~erred to the Police Department. Motion carried.
A communication from Flossie I. Shafer~ expressing
appreciation of work done by the fire department in checking fire
at 3705 Santa Fe Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that same
be filed. Motion carried.
Communications from the following firms, regarding
traffic and parking conditions at their respective looations, were
read: Cantlay & Tanzola Inc.~ at 2750 S. Alameda Street; A. M.
Castle &. Company~cat 2200 E. 55th Street; and, Swift & Company~
at Ve~on& Alameda Streets.

Communications from the following firms requesting permits
to hau1L>r~fuse from their premises upon and along the public streets
of the City of Vernon, were read: Imperial Pipe & Supply Co., of
2901 Santa Fe Avenue; Machinist Tool & Supply Co., of 3690 Santa Fe
Avenue; and Swift & Company, of 3750 Jewel Avenue.
It was mved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the
communications be filed, and permits granted. Motion carried.
A oommunioationfrom Louis Luther, requesting a permit
to remove plaster and other refuse from premises at 3705 Santa Fe
Avenue in connection with wrecking of a building, was read..
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider that the
communioationnbe filed, and permit granted. Motion carried.
ORDINANCE No. 522, an Ordinace of the City of V~rnon
prohibiting the carrying on of any livestock show or exhibition
within the city Of Vernon, except in Zones NOlo 1 and No.. 2., of
said City, was read for second reading.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider that
Ordinance No. 522 be passed for second reading. Motion carried.
Ordinance No. 522, an ordinance of the City of Vernon
prohibiting the carrying on of any livestock show or exhibition
within the City of Vernon, except in Zones No. 1 and No.2, of
said City~ was read for tne third and final reading.
It was moved by Peralta~ seconded by Scheider that
Ordinance No. 522 be adopted. Motion carried by the following

The following applications, all having the approval of
the City Engineer, were read:
Application 6110: Union Pacific Railroad Co., to make
excavation in Magnolia Street, 50 feet long and 12 feet wide in
connection with railroad spur track.
Application 6111: Repeal Brass Company, to construct
sidewalk, driveway and depressed curb at 2115 E. 27th Street.
! Application 6112: Southern California Gas Company to
rep~!r gas main on Santa Fe Avenue, 254 feet north of 49th Street.
~plication 6113: Swift & Company to make sewer con-
nection at-Vernon and Jewel Avenues.

Application 6115: Pioneer Flintkote Co., to make sewer
connection at 2051 East 55th Street.

applications be filed, and permits granted. Motion carried.
The Minutes of the Committee on Light, Power, Water,
Buil~ing and Purchasing, as of November 15, 1938, were read.
