MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
VERNON, HELD TUESDAY JANUARY 17,
1939, AT THREE O'CLOCK P.M., AT
THE CITY HALL OF THE CITY OF
VERNON, 4305 SANTA FE AVENUE,
VERNON, CALIFORNIA.

The meeting was called to order by the Mayor, J. J.
Furlong.
Councilmen present: Furlong, Peralta, Scheider, Levy.
Councilmen absent: Leonis.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider that the
reading of the Minutes of the previous meeting be dispensed with.
Motion carried.
A communication from the Consulting Engineer, recommend-
ing the signing of a certain overhead wire crossing agreement for
LA & Salt Lake Railway Co., near Hobart Station, was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Scheider that the
communication be filed and the recommendation concurred in. Motion
carried.
A communication from the Consulting Engineer, submitting
the annual report on operation of Vernon Electric System by Southern
California Edison Company, was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider that same
be filed. Motion carried.
A communication from the City Engineer, submitting a
statement and estimate of work completed by Oberg Bros. on recover-
ing the City's reservoir roof, was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider that same
be filed. Motion carried.
A communication from the City Engineer, submitting a
statement and estimate of the work completed on Improvement of
East 37th. Street, was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider that same
be filed. Motion carried.
A communication from the Vernon Industrial Development
Association, submitting Bill of Sale dated November 30, 1937, from
the Southern California Edison Co., Partial Release dated November
16, 1938, from Harris Trust & Savings Bank and Security-First Nat-
ional Bank of Los Angeles, and Partial Release dated November 28,
1938, from Wells Fargo Bank and Union Trust Company, was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that same be
referred to the Consulting Engineer for report. Motion carried.

The report of the Vernon Industrial Development Associa-
tion for the year ending December 31, 1938, was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta, that same be
filed. Motion carried.
A report of the General Petroleum Corporation, on franchise
ordinances 80, 152 and 299, together with a check in the sum of
$37.69 for annual payment, was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta the the communi-
cation be filed and the check accepted. Motion carried.
A communication from McCullough Tool Company, requesting
a permit to keep on hand approximately 75 poundS of' small arms
pastol powder on their premises located at 2063 E. Slauson Ave.,
was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the communi-
cation be filed, and the permit granted. Motion carried.
A communication from the City of Maywood, regarding the
placing of a vapor light in place of present light at Slauson and
Downey Road, was read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the
matter be referred to the Police Department. Motion carried.
A communication from Axelson Manufacturing Company, re-
gardingtraffic conditions near Boyle and Randolph Streets, was
read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Scheider ,that same be
referred to the Police Department. Motion carried.
A communication from the Union Oil Company, reporting
on County of' Los Angeles Franchise Ordinance No. 596 N.S., was
read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that same
be filed. Motion carried.
Communications from Arthur Maas and the Vernon Brewing
Co., requesting permits to haul refuse from their premises upon
and along the public streets in the City of Vernon, were read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the
communications be filed, and permits granted.
The report of the Police Department was read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that same
be filed. Motion carried.
A communication from the City Engineer, regarding the
Magnolia Avenue storm drain, in connection with Leonis Blvd.
storm drain, recommending a resolution agreeing to restore street
surfacing, was read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the
communication be filed, and the recommendation therein be concurred
in. Motion carried.

Resolution No. 961, a resolution instructing the City
Engineer to secure a permit to construct and maintain a storm
drain in Magnolia Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that Resolu-
tion No. 961 be adopted. Motion carried.
Resolution No. 962, a resolution of the City Council of
the City of Vernon, withdrawing from the Los Angeles County Free
Library System, was read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the
City Clerk post Notices as required by law for Cities withdrawing
from any County Free Library System. Motion carried.
The Minutes of the Committee on Light, Power, Water,
Btiilding and PurchaSing, as of January 3, 1939, 'YIeJre read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that same
stand approved as read. Motion carried.
The following applications, all having the approval of
the City Engineer were read:
Application 6168: Southern California Telephone Co., to
remove pole and anchor and replace anchor on the north side of
27th Street.
Application 6169: Southern California Telephone Co., to
remove two poles and three anchors on the north side of Fruitland
Road, east of and west of Pacific Blvd.
Application 6170: Southern California Gas Company, to
repair gas service at Fruitland Road, 16' north of the south prop-
erty line of Malabar Street. (To supply 2455 E. 52nd St.).'
Application 6171: Southern California Gas Company, to re-
pair gas service on E. 37th Street west of Ross Street.
Application 6172: Union Oil Company to install 5" drain
pipe througn curb at Vernon & Santa Fe Avenue.
Application 6173: Southern California Gas Co., to repair
gas service on E. 37th Street, east of Ross Street.
Application 6174: Southern California Gas Co., to repair
and abandon gas service on E. 37th Street west of Ross Street.
Application 6175: Southern California Gas Co., to repair
gas service on E. 37th Street, west of Irving Street.
Ap~lication 6176: Wayne Pump Co., to clean out solvent
tank and valves at 5190 Santa Fe Avenue.
Ap~lication 6177: Boyle Manufacturing Co., to repair
steam pipe line at 5100 Santa Fe Avenue.
Application 6178: Southern California Gas Co., to make
leakage survey on E. 37th Street between Alameda and Ross Streets.
Application 6179: Southern California GaS Co., to install
gas service at 2600 Santa Fe Avenue.

It was moved by Levy, seconded by Scheider that the ap-
plications be filed, and permits granted. Motion carried.
Demands on the General Fund in the sum of $20,537.42 were
read.

mands be allowed and warrants drawn. Motion carried.
