MINUTES OF A REGULIR MEETING OF THE
CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERNON,
HELD TUESDAY, MARCH 7th., 1939, AT
THREE O'CLOCK P.M., AT THE CITY HALL
OF THE CITY OF VERNON6 4305 SANTA FE
AVENUE, VERNON, CALIF RNIA.
The meeting was 'cal1ed to order by the Mayor, J. J.
Furlong.
Councilmen present: Furlong, Leonis, Scheider, Levy
and Peralta.
Councilmen absent: None
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider that the
reading of the Minutes of the previous meeting be dispensed with.
Motion carried.
A communication from the City Engineer, recommending
the sale of excess lumber to Oberg Bros., at a price of $15.00
per thousand feet, was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta that same
be laid over. Motion carried.
A communication from the City Attorney recommending the
acceptance of two partial releases and one bill of sale from the
Southern California Edison Company, was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded bI Peralta that the
communication be filed, and the recommendat on be concurred in.
Motion carried.
A communication from the Industrial Shoe Corporation,
requesting a permit to operate an industrial shoe store at 5821
Santa Fe Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Levy that the com-
munication be filed and the permit granted. Motion carried.
A communication from A. W. Christenson, requesting a
permit to operate a tool and die shop at 2363 E. 38th Street, was
read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the com-
munication be fi~d and the permit granted. Motion carried.
Franchise Reports from the Southern California Gas Com-
pany on Franchise Ordinances Nos. 89, 270, 463 and 514, together
wi th a check in the sum of $678.85, we. read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the matter
be referred to the Committee of the Whole. Motion carried.
A corrimunication from the Western Union Telegraph Company,
requesting a loading zone at 2816 Santa Fe Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that same be
referred to the Police Department. Motion carried.
A communication from Boyle Manufacturing Company re-
questing a permit to haul refuse from their premises at 5100 Santa
Fe Avenue, was read. .

It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Levy that the
communication be filed, and permit granted. Motion oarried.
A oommunioation from Allis-Chalmers Manufaoturing Co.,
requesting a permit to haul refuse from their premises at 4440
East 49th. Street, was read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Levy that the com-
munication be filed and permit granted. Motion carried.
A communication from E. G. Hilton Company, of 6035 Pacific
Blvd., Huntington Park, requesting a permit to haul refuse upon and
along the public streets of the City of Vernon, was read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the

The report of the Police Department was read.

ORDINANCE No.. 525, an ordinance providing for the estab-
lishment and maintenance of a public library for the City of
Vernon, was read for the seoond reading.
It was moved by Soheider, seconded by Peralta that Ordi-
nance No. 5e5 be passed for the second reading. Motion oarried.
Ordinanoe No. 525, an ordinance providing for the estab-
lishment and maintenance of a public library for the City of Ver-
non, was read for the third and final reading.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that Ordi-
nance No. 525 be a~opted. Motion carried by the following vote:
Ayes: Furlong, Scheider, Leonis, Levy and Peralta.
Noes: None
Absent: None.
Resolution No. 971, a resolution employing E. R. Young,
Attorney at Law, to assist the City Attorney in certain matters
before the Railroad Commission, was ~ead.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Levy that Resolu-
tion No. 971 be adopted. Motion carried.
A communication from Stauffer Chemical Co., of 3200 E.
26th St., requesting that additional property be included in the
ohemical zone, was read.
It was moved by Scheider, seoonded by Peralta that the
matter be referred to the City Engineer. Motion carried.
The following applications, all having the approval of
the City Engineer, were read:
Ap~lication 6250: Southern California Edison Company,
to construct 4" aSphalt concrete sidewalk at Fruitland Road,
180' west of P~cifio Blvd.
Applioation 6251: Buttress & McClellan, to install roof
drain through curb at 4641 Pacific Blvd.
Application 6252: W. H. Lummus to construot oement con-
crete sidewalk at 2415E. 37th Street.

It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Levy that the ap-
plications be filed, and permits granted. Motion carried.
The Minutes of the Committee on Light, Power, Water,
Building and Purchasing, as of February 21st. were read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that same
stand approved as read. Motion carried.
Demands on the General Fund in the sum of $7,339.28
were read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta that the
demands be allowed and warrants drawn. Motion carried.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Levy that the meet-
ing adjourn to the 8th day of March, 1939 the hour of three-
otclock P.M. Motion carried.
