J. Furlong.
Councilmen present: Furlong, Scheider, Peralta,
Levy.
Councilme* absent: Leonis.
It was move~ by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that
the reading o~ the minut~s of the previous meeting be dispensed
with. Motion carried. .
A communica~ion ~rom Francis Bates, City Engineer,
stating that he had a te+egram from the Regional Director o~
Federal Emergency Admini.tration o~ Public Works, authorizing
the award o~ contraot tolS. M. Milovich for improvement o~ Boyle-
Magnolia Avenues, was re~d.

A Resolutio~ of the Board of Supervisors regarding

gasoline tax monies, was I read.

It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider that
same be referred to the qity Engineer for a report. Motion carried.
A communicaiion from the City Clerk, Los Angeles, re-
garding a petition of W. IL. Brent, and others, ~or,special assess-
ment proceedings under S~reet Opening Act of 1905 ~or the opening
and extending of Washing~on Blvd., between Soto Street and Downey
Road, was read. .

A Franchise IReport, from Southern California Telephone
Company, for the period ~nding April 22, 1939, togeDher with a check
in the sum o~ $8,962.34, Iwas read.
It was move4 by Levy, seconded by Scheider that the
check be accepted, and t~e communication filed. Motion carried.
A communication from Great Western Live Stock Show,
desiring to hold a lives~ock show at the Los Angeles Union Stock
Yards October 28th to Novlember 3rd., 1939, was read.
It was move~ by Levy, seconded by Peralta, that the
matter be laid over untill the next meeting o~ the City Council.
Motion carried.

A communication from Graham Bros., Inc., requesting
a temporary permit to drain wash-rack drainage into a pit on
City owned property located adjacent to their property on Soto
Street, was read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that
~he matter be referred to the City Engineer. Motion carried.
A communication from Harman Packing Company, request-
ing permission to place concrete footing seventeen inches beyond
property line and six feet below street level, was read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that
same be referred to the City Engineer. Motion carried.
A communication from Harman Packing Company, request-
ing permission to erect a temporary fence into the street at 3305
E. Vernon Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the
matter be referred to the City Engineer with power to act. Motion
carried.
A communication from Ralph G. Dow, Certified Public
Accountant, regarding annual audit, was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that same
be filed. Motion carried.
Communications from the following firms, regarding a
grade crossing on Alameda Street, were read by the City Clerk:
Acme Brewing Company, Ducommun Metals & Supply Co., Bohemian Dis-
sributing Company and Boyle h~ufacturing Company.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Levy that all
communications be referred to the City Engineer. Motion carried.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Levy that the
City Council rescind their action formerly taken in reference to
the Cooperative Foundry Company, and deny the permit. Motion
carried.

It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the
City Council grant a permit to the Cooperative Foundry Company to
continue their business. Motion carried.
A communication from Modern Metal Fabricators, request-
ing a permit to manufacture stainless steel and Monel metal pro-
ducts at 4901 Santa Fe Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the
communication be filed, and permit granted. Motion carried.
A communication from Rome Company, requesting a permit
to manufacture bedsprings, studio couches, mattresses and box
springs at 2626 Santa Fe Avenue, was read. .
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that same be
referred to the Fire Chief for a report. Motion carried.

A communication from C. B. Hubbard in behalf of Ray-
Lite Glass Comp,any requesting a permit to. manufacture glass pro-
ducts at 2050 i. 48th Street, was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider that the
communication be filed, and permit granted. Motion carried.
Resolution No. 984, a resolution of the City Council of
the City of Vernon awarding the contract for the im.provement of
Boyle and Magnolia Streets under specifications No. 120, .to S. M.
Milovich, was read.

Resolution No. 984 be adopted. Motion carried by the following

ABSENT: Leonis.
A communication from G. A. Bigg, Auditor, recommending
the transfer of unexpended balance of $2,275_35 from the P.W.A. Fund
to the Water Department Construction Fund, was read.
Councilman Scheider then introduced Resolution No. 985,
a resolution of the City Council authorizing the transfer of funds
from the W.P.A. Fund to the Water Department-Construction Fund, and
moved its adoption, which was seconded by Councilman Peralta, and
carried.
A communication from Hydraulic Duplicator Company, re-
questing a per.mit to operate a machine shop at 2316 E. 37th Street,
was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the com-
munication be filed, and permit granted. Motion carried.
Acommunica tion from the Tire Treading Co..,. request;1.ng
a permit to operate a re-treading, re-capping and tire repairing
shop at 2149 E. 37th Street, was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peral~a that the com-
munication be filed, and permit granted. Motion carried.
A communication from DeLuxe Box Lunch Company, request:::'
ing that licenses be changed from individuals' names to the name of

It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the com-
munication be filed, and the request granted upon the return of the
individual permits. Motion carried.
A communication from the State Relief Administration,
regarding installation of traffic signals ~t 52nd and Santa Fe Ave-
nue, was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the com-
munication be filed. Motion carried.
A communication from Whiting-Mead Company regarding ped-
estri~ crossing at 2260 E. Vernon Avenue, was read.

M. A. Newmark & Co., of 4249 N. Produce Plaza; Growers Cold Storage
Corp., of 5050 S. Alameda Street; Pennzoil Company, of 2626 Santa Fe
Avenue; Carl Male, of 2328 E. Vernon Avenue; Grant Oil Tool Co., of

Purchasing and Building as of May 16th., 1939, were read.

Minutes stand approved as read. Motion carried.

manhole covers in Jewel Avenue between Vernon Avenue and 37th Street.
Application 6383: Southern California Gas Co., to in-
stall gas service on E. 26th Street, 175 feet east of Santa Fe AVe-
nue.
Application 6384: Southern California Gas Company to
supply gas at 2445 Santa Fe Avenue.

temporary driveway on south side of 49th Street, 160 feet west of
Pacific Blvd.

A communication from H & M Mechinical Vending Machine
Co., for a permit to operate an ice cream vending machine on prem-
ises of Wilshire Oil Company Plant at 26th and Santa Fe Avenue, was
read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the
communication be filed, and permit granted. Motion carried.
Demands on the General Fund in the sum of $8,264.82
were read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Levy that the
demands be allowed, and warrants drawn. Motion carried.
