19390718 Regular City Council Meeting - Minutes MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERNON, CALIFORNIA, HELD TUESDAY,. JULY 18, 1939, AT THE HOUR OF THREE 0' CLOCK P.M., AT THE CITY HALL OF THE CITY OF VERNON, 4305 SANTA FE AVENUE, VERNON, CALIF. "\ The meeting was called to order by the Mayor, J. J. Furlong. Councilmen present: Furlong, Peralta, Scheider, Levy. Councilmen absent: Leonis. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Levy that the reading of the minutes of the previous meeting be dispensed with. Motion - carried. A communication from the Board of Education, requesting a permit to move a one-story school bungalow onto Vernon school site at Vernon and Santa Fe Avenue, was read. It was" moved by Scheider, seconded by Levy that the com- munication be filed, and permit granted. Motion carried. A communication from Luer Packing Company, regarding the driving of cattle across Vernon Avenue, was read. It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the matter be referred to the Police Department for report. Motion carried. A communication from Roscoe R. Hess, Attorney, regarding Franchises of Southern California Edison Company and Southern Calif- ornia Gas Company, was read. It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the matter be referred to the_City Attorney. Motion carried. A communication from Vernon Industrial Development Assoc- iation, regarding grade crossing at 49th and Alameda Streets, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the com- munication be filed. Motion carried. A communication from Linden N. Ross, requesting a disabled war veteran lieense to sell juice extractor at various factories, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peratla that the mat- ter be referred to the Police Department. Motion carried. A communication f'rom Chas. E. Clover, requesting a permit and license to sell box lunches, was read. It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the matter be referred to the Police Department. Motion carried. -1- 186 A communication from Pyodin Distributing Corp., request- ing a permit to operate a feed distribution business at 4509 Prod- uce Plaza, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the communication be filed, and permit granted. Motion carried. A communication from De Luxe Box Lunch Co., requesting a permit to sell box lunches within the City of Vernon, was read. It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the com- munication be f~d and permit granted. Motion carried. A report of General Petroleum Corp., on franchise ordi- nance No. 781 N.S. of the County of Los Angeles, was read. It was moved by Levy, seconded by Scheider that same be filed. Motion carried. A communication from Sugar Products co., requesting a permit to use sidewalk area at 2317 E. 38th Street in connection with construction of a new building, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta, that inas- much as same has the approval of the City Engineer, that the request _be granted. Motion carried. The Report of Vernon Industrial Development Association for the period ending June 30, 1939, was read. It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that same be filed. Motion carried. A communication from Francis Bates, City Engineer, rec- commending a salary increase for L. C. Newman for servicing city trucks from $10.00 per month to $20.00 per month, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta, that the communication be filed, and the recommendation of the City Engineer be concurred in. Motion carried. filed. Building The Minutes of the Committee on Light, Power, Water, and Purchasing, as of July 5, 1939, were read. It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Levy that Same stand as read. Motion carried. approved The Report of C. A. Heinze, Consulting Electrical Engineer on the operation of the electric system by Southern California Ediso~ Company for the month of May, 1939, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that same be filed. Motion carried. -2- 1~7 The following applications, all having the approval of the City Engineer, were read: Application 6446: H. F. Pagel, to construct two driveways and depressed curb at 2317 E. 38th Street. Application 6447: Southern California Edison Co., to in- stall four poles and two anchors and remove eight poles and three anchors on Santa Fe Avenue, 52nd Street and Fruitland Road. Application 6448: Southern California Water Company, to repair water main at 2138 E. 25th Street. .. Application 6449: Southern California Water Company, to repair water main at 2160 E. 25th Street. m Application 6450: Southern California Water Company, to repair water main at 4701 Santa Fe Avenue. Application 6451: Southern California Water Company, to repair water main at northeast corner of 30th St. and Santa Fe Avenue. Application 6452: Southern California Edison Company, to move one pole and install three poles at 49th Street, 885, 1020, and 1145 feet west of Santa Fe Avenue, Boyle Avenue and 145 feet north of Slauson Avenue. Application 6453: American Can Co., to connect to sewer in 49th Street, 1000 feet west of Santa Fe Aven~e. Application 6454: American Can Co., to connect to sewer in 49th Street, 1300 feet west of Santa Fe Avenue. It was moved by Levy, seconded by Scheider that the ap- plications be filed, and permits granted. Motion carried. Demands on the General Fund in the sum of $7,709.04 were read. It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the demands be allowed, and warrants drawn. Motion carried.
